Aren't you France's closest ally after the war? they said. Aren't you always the one pushing for discipline and for order? they said. You go talk to them.
And what can Germany say to that? (Actually, he's just about ready to toss each and every one of them into the Rhine, mediation be damned--starting with America.)
He nearly looks to Hungary for help, stops himself just in time--his brother would never let him hear the end of it.
He is, to be perfectly honest, a little concerned by the unexpected rapprochement as well. France and England have been nominally at peace for over a hundred years, but it is only lately that reality has begun to overtake print, and England is no friendlier to the Union than before. Germany has been meaning to broach the subject with France, but the usually open-booked nation seems to have suddenly become busier than he has been in decades. His leadership nowadays, too, is a fickle beast.
And so, they come to rumors, informal meetings, and jumpy North Americans who have probably watched a few too many Hollywood manglings of the sci-fi genre last night. Even America's twin is piping up (what could be heard of him around Russia's girth).
And Germany finds himself standing, in supreme discomfort, at the doors of the room England insists on setting aside for tea after world meetings, fiddling awkwardly with his bow tie and trying to recall the memorized list of simultaneous transgressions he's about to bring before the two most likely to be found at the other side. The muffled curses that occasionally penetrate the solid wood keep throwing off his concentration until finally, he throws the doors open in a fit of pure frustration--
"Please excuse me, I--"
"You great frog, get your stinking face out of there this instant--"
"Ah, but you must admit I have behaved myself admirably, chère Angleterre, and this is the last day in which--"
"Fuck, did you forget the bolt again, you--argh!"
"--Allemagne, quel plaisir!"
France and England freeze in unison, France halfway under the table kneeling between England's legs, and England's hands tangled one in the former's hair and one in the flimsy material of the black waistcloth he is trying to smooth back over his lap. A well-loved tea set glints in the light of early afternoon.
The waistcloth is the only piece of clothing they have between the two of them.
Germany is considerably more concerned, now.
