SPOILER: He's not an only child [7.1/n] anonymous May 19 2009, 17:05:14 UTC
"This is Team Water Pipe and Team Awesome," one of the counselors, a man Matthew knew was called Sadiq, said. "Boys," he looked at the team captains, "this is a friendly game of basketball, okay? Roughhousing can go after you're not in front of me."

"Gotcha!" Alfred cheerfully replied.

Ivan was silent though.

"Are we clear on this, Braginski?" Sadiq asked.

"Of course."

And Sadiq had to say that he'd never seen a creepier smile before. So he only let out a nervous grin -- not that his nervousness was something overly apparent -- and blew the whistle.

Basketball. A game made only violent by boys around their age. Matthew was happy that he was on the bench, and he hoped with crossed fingers that Alfred wasn't crazy enough to call him in the game because everyone knew that he sucked at basketball.

"I'm telling you now not to hope too much," Ludwig, who was seated beside Matthew, said, "because Alfred's the kind of guy who calls on everyone in his team. He'll always take the lead though."

"So, um, what do I do then?" Matthew asked. He knew that Alfred would be that kind of team captain. Alfred would want everyone to join in even though something in his blood was screaming at him that they wouldn't win if he used this and that.

"You wait for the inevitable, Matthew-san," Kiku said.

"You can do it anyway, Kirkland!" Yong Soo shouted as he whacked Matthew on the back.

"Thank you," Matthew said as he wondered what was up with everyone whacking him on the back today.

A few more minutes of kid-friendly playing had passed before shit had hit the fan. Before anyone could see what was exactly wrong, Alfred was lying face-down on the ground and the ball was rolling away to the outside field. The whole court was quiet; fairly reminiscent of their first night in camp.

"What is wrong, comrade?" Ivan asked.

A seemingly innocent question, of course. Until Alfred stood up and jabbed Ivan's chest with his index finger.

"That was a foul, Ivan!" Alfred shouted.

"But you tripped out of your own accord, da?" Ivan asked.

"So I willed your foot to pop up in front of me while I was running?"

"It was an accident."

"I call foul, dammit."

"Foul because you're clumsy, Bonnefoy?"

Ivan's smile grew. Alfred's temper flared.

Around that time was when fists started flying. Around that time was when Matthew started to think that Alfred and Ivan were a different sort of friends; they could very easily be mistaken for the best of buddies, but when things started turning sour between them, it was completely chaotic.

"FIGHT!" someone had shouted.

A ring of kids went around Ivan and Alfred. All of them were chanting and rooting.

"Fuck," Ludwig had uttered before springing into action.

"Kids, kids! Break it up!" Sadiq had yelled as he ran towards the ring of seemingly bloodthirsty campers.

"I-I'm going to get Yao and a medicine kit," Yong Soo had muttered before running.

Matthew really wasn't quite so sure what to do, but he knew that he had to do something. So he stood up, looking as straight as a stick. He squeezed his eyes shut and thought over various options. He decided to throw away all caution to the wind, just as Alfred liked to do. The only thing that was on his mind was stopping the two from fighting because, no matter what, fighting between friends was always something stupid and--

He wasn't also quite sure when he'd started running or when he'd started pushing away the people in front of him to make way for himself. He definitely wasn't sure when he'd finally reached the brawling duo. And, yeah, if anyone asked him, he wouldn't be sure if he was the one who'd jumped at Ivan and Alfred, and successfully knocked all three of them down to the ground.

Would Matthew Kirkland have done anything like that?

When he opened his eyes, he noticed that everything was a bit blurry. He found his glasses a few meters away from him. Apparently, someone had stepped on them.

Too bad he didn't bring a spare.

"Let's just stop?" he said, heaving as he did so.

Being a peacemaker was a tiring task.

Alfred's lower lip was bleeding and his left eye was significantly darker than before. Ivan's right cheek was starting to swell.

Matthew didn't know why, but the two of them had started to laugh after a moment or two of silence. He certainly didn't know why he started laughing too.

"Didn't know you had it in you, Mattie," Alfred said.

"I didn't know myself," Matthew confessed.

"What am I going to do with all of you?" Yao said as he entered the scene.

"They're sorry."

"I don't think we are," Alfred said. He looked at Ivan. "Do we?"

"Yes," Ivan said.

Matthew stood up and sighed.

"Boys will always be boys, but this is ridiculous," Yao said as he looked at the two badly beaten up boys in front of him. "The two of you stay in your rooms. For a week."

"Huh what? No fair!" Alfred whined.

"You don't break rules without getting punished."

"But--!"

"Your meals will be given to you by your roommates."

"I want to call my lawyer."

"There's no such thing in this camp." Yao had smiled then.

"You shouldn't have punched him," Matthew said as he brought in Alfred's dinner.

"No way. That'd be saying that I'm giving up," Alfred said. "Real men never give up."

Matthew sighed and placed the tray on the bedside table.

"Real men know when to throw the towel in," he said.

"Yeah, well, that's bull," Alfred said, chewing his food. "This tastes nice."

"You're really reckless, Alfred."

"Uncle Gilbo always said that life's short, so we ought to enjoy it."

There was just no reasoning with Alfred, wasn't there?

"Hey, so you got replacements for your glasses?" Alfred asked, peering over the soup bowl he'd raised to his mouth.

"Not yet," Matthew said, shaking his head.

"You've been bumping into walls the whole day." Must've been the only reason why he even noticed.

"I guess you could say that I'm as blind as a bat, eh?" He chuckled.

"I've got a spare. Think they'd work?"

Before Matthew could even tell him not to bother, Alfred was already rummaging through the jungle that was his possessions. He ransacked his closet drawers at least thrice before coming out with a pair of usable-looking glasses.

"Eureka!" he exclaimed. He turned to Matthew. "Here, catch!"

"Huh, oh what? No, wait, Alfred!" Matthew said. He was positively horrid at catch. What if he broke the glasses? (He'd feel guilty even if they were just spares and even if Alfred didn't really seem to care.)

Alfred chucked the glasses at Matthew who barely caught them.

"Nice!" Alfred said with a grin and a thumbs up.

"Oh yes," Matthew said, hoping that he wasn't clutching the glasses too much.

Alfred was going to be the death of him while they were at camp. Period.

He decided to put the glasses on, if only to humor Alfred. Though he did find out in the end that the glasses worked fine with him even if his surroundings were a bit blurry. It was better than having the world look smudged and horribly disfigured.

"They're fine," he said. "Thank you."

"Knew that they'd work like a charm," Alfred said. "And, hey, while I was looking for them, I saw something else!" He held out a picture with a bright grin on his face. "I never knew papa slipped this into my stuff." He walked to where Matthew was and showed him the picture.

"He, um."

"He looks cool, right? That's my papa right there. We just came back from my baseball game when that was taken."

"I think he looks awfully familiar though."

Alfred sat on his bed. "He must be. He gets featured in a lot of magazines. You read those lifestyle things?"

"No. My father does though. I think that must be why I think that your father's familiar." Still, something wasn't quite right about it. Matthew decided to shrug the thought away. He was thinking too much about this.
