“Honda-san, you have a visitor,” said the nurse, as if the concept was new to her. Kiku tried not to look too eager as he turned his head to look…
And there he was. His former enemy and present caretaker, America, standing there with a large bag of oranges and a cheerful smile.
“Hey, Kiku, look what I got for ya! I heard oranges help you heal faster,” he said boldly, sidling up to Kiku’s bedside, “These are from Florida. They’re the best! Come on, let’s eat some together!”
Kiku didn’t have the heart to tell him that oranges were only good for curing colds, not healing melted flesh. Oh well, at least he didn’t bring hamburgers.
“Ah, hello Alfred… Thank you very much for the gift,” he whispered as politely he could muster without sounding sarcastic. He glanced at the bright, round oranges and decided that he didn’t want to eat any. He was starting to get a headache.
Nevertheless, Alfred decided to perch himself on the side of the bed and start peeling an orange. Kiku pretended not to mind, like he did with all the brazen things America did.
The tangy scent of citrus filled the air as Alfred removed the smooth, sun-ripened skin with his fingernails. He removed a golden section of the meat, and offered it up to the wary Kiku.
“Oh, you still can’t move your arms, can you?”
“Yes, it’s somewhat painful to use them, but don’t worry about me.” Kiku smiled, hoping that Alfred would get the message.
Their eyes met for a moment, but Kiku quickly looked away.
“...That’s alright, I can feed it to you.”
And with that, Alfred lifted the piece of orange to Kiku’s lips and told him to say “ah”. Staring for a few seconds in disbelief, he gingerly took a small nibble out of courtesy. Just his luck, a jet of orange juice squirted straight into his eye.
Kiku let out an undignified shriek, followed by profuse blinking and eye-watering. Alfred laughed hysterically, making the bed shake.
It's as if the request was for oranges. TT_TT I must stay on track!
