“Hey, are you okay? Can you tie the tie? Why’s it taking so long?” the American’s pounding on the door startled the Puerto Rican.
“N-nothing’s wrong, I’m fine.” He wiped at his eyes, and slung the tie around his neck. He glanced into the mirror on the wall, trying to make himself look presentable to his new boss. He didn’t hear the door open, or the American man coming into the room, watching him try to stop the tears.
“No, you’re not.” Mateo jumped, turned to the American and pressed his back to the wall.
“Wha-“ The American leaned in, peering through glasses at the Puerto Rican’s face.
“Why were you crying?”
“I-I wasn’t!”
“Yes you were.” Mateo bit his lip, and lowered his head. A few moments passed before Alfred pressed, “Well?”
“Because you’re all the same!” Mateo shouted, unable to hold it back. “You all come in and promise to help me but what do you guys do? You come into my islands, enslave my people, take away my freedom, suck up my riches, make me act like you, for what? So you can get rich?” The blond’s eyes widened and he stepped back. “You guys all force your ways onto me and I want it to stop!” the smaller sobbed, covering his face with his hands. “Please…I want to act like me. Not you.” Alfred watched him for a moment. He tilted the smaller’s chin up, looking him dead in the eye, before leaning in and pressing his lips to the other’s softly. Mateo was caught off guard, but he fisted the older’s shirt, pushed his weight to his toes to push himself closer. After a moment, the older pulled back, and Mateo looked up at him, face flustered, and the Puerto Rican breathed, “Ay, bendito.” softly.
“Yeah, I’m gonna speak to you in English.” Alfred started. “And I’m gonna use your island to help my country. But you don’t have to cry.” Before the Puerto Rican could protest, he pushed a finger to his lips. “Your people will be citizens of America, you’ll have all the benefits I give my people-well, okay, most. But you don’t have to act just like me.” The smaller studied the older for a moment. “I’m not gonna enslave you or your people. You’re free still. Just ‘cause my boss is your boss doesn’t mean I’m gonna take advantage of you.” The Puerto Rican looked to his feet.
“I want to be myself.” He said, hands dropping to his sides.
“Well…who says you can’t?”
“You. You want me to be American.” The Puerto Rican pouted.
“That doesn’t mean you can’t act like the cute guy you are.” Alfred smiled and Mateo blushed. “That just means you gotta do it while speaking English and wearing my clothes.” He patted the Puerto Rican’s head. “My boss wants to talk to you, by the way. In a little bit. When you’re ready I’ll do your tie.”
The Puerto Rican decided that maybe, just maybe, Americanization won’t be as bad as he thought.

“Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico, right?” Arthur asked, stumbling on the words. Mateo smiled warmly and nodded.
“You can call me a Commonwealth. I don’t mind that, and it’ll probably be easier on you, because you speak English. English is one of my official languages, after all, I don’t mind you speaking it to me.”
“Right.” Arthur nodded. “Why do you put up with him?”
“With who?”
“Him.” he jabbed a thumb towards Alfred, who was insisting something about aliens and ghosts and exchanging stories about some dog-like beast of the south with Ivan who was claiming to have seen it, too. Mateo studied the energetic, younger blond before looking up to Arthur and chuckling.
“Americanization, I suppose.” Arthur cocked his head to the side. “I’m too American to stand alone.”
Alfred smiled a little from his place near Ivan before continuing his story.

1. Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico is the Spanish name for the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. I like it better. “Associated free state” has a better ring to it than “commonwealth”.
2. Not all Puerto Ricans protested at the American intervention. As far as I read, there was one outburst. After that, there were none. Hence Mateo giving up so quickly.
3. Puerto Rico is apparently known as the “Land of Ay, Bendito!” since it’s a stereotype that they say it all the time. Well, that’s what I read, anyways.
4. L-let's pretend I didn't not rename the part before

Ivan and Alfred were talking about El Chupacabra. Yes, it was spotted in Russia. Seriously.
(It's hilarious that it says that it's Puerto Rican. I totally forgot that while writing the omake and should have included that. Oh, well.)

Am I the only one on tenderhooks wondering what Puerto Rico will decide, now that America-thru-Obama has definitively left it completely up to PR to vote on officially becoming a state, being a territory, being independent, or free association?

You're right though about many Puerto Ricans changing their minds and thinking that the Americans would free them, but they were soon proved wrong. And we actually had more freedom under the last years under Spain than we have now. And while we do say, "Ay bendito" sometimes it should hardly be known for that.
I mostly feel disappointed that the author anon didn't end the fic or show more of a fighting spirit or at least have Puerto Rico being who he is. A Puerto Rican and on another note although Spanish and English are both official languages, only 80% speak English so it would be best if PR continued speaking Spanish or better yet making USA speak some since he bascially influences USA and has Spanish on the mainland rise greatly. The way the fic ended kinda made it seem like PR was a practically a state and that's VERY much not the case. Both because many Americans don't want it (it would lessen the already weak political power of the other 50 states, not to mention the language issue) and because we still consider oursleves more Latin Americans. That 2012 referendum was misleading since the ones that wanted statehood were only 61% of the 55% that wanted to change the status quo. But 45% wanted either indepenence or more autonomy as a "free association."
So yeah...wish you didn't make PR seem so "Americanized" or the very least you could've shown how much he also influenced USA since the relationship kinda goes BOTH ways. They influence us and we influence them. :/
