Austria is definitely the band. I should've made that clearer, and I noticed that after I posted--but alas, anons cannot edit posts! =( The nymphs were just--there to be there. I was a little inspired by the nymphs carved on the bell in Herman Melville's 'The Bell-Tower,' but they weren't really a reference. And 'cash or check?' means 'kiss now, or kiss later?'
Lithuania's a little shabbier, I suppose, because he isn't trying to show off to anyone (like Poland does). You're absolutely right that he prefers to be practical and hardworking; so long as he's neat and presentable, that's sufficient. But that's just my characterization choice. ^_^;;
I agree that the exclamation was jarring. I was trying to find something that would fit for the period jargon I was giving him, but that would also fit for the character ... and I couldn't find anything. So I picked something that on posting didn't actually work for either. *faaaail*
I'm glad that it worked in general for you, though! You were the one I meant to please. *smile*

And this Poland corresponds nearly perfectly to the image I've formed of him. I was absolutely delighted with the way you described him - I was afraid I'd have to write my own fic to see that optimism and pride and those delusions of grandeur of his. Was there anything you've read on Poland that helped you form this image, besides the original comic and Wikipedia? (Because I'm always looking to add to my Poland quotes collection.)
And this Lithuania is my characterization choice, too. ^^
I - I didn't actually mean that the exclamation was jarring because it didn't fit the fic, but rather because up to that point your Poland was exactly the same as the one in my head, and then at a point where the Poland in my head would have exclaimed "Sweet Mother of God" or somesuch, yours says "Sweet Christ" instead. I mean, the difference is minimal - it just shows that you haven't been reading my mind after all while writing this ^^; Just, his adoration of Mary is one of the things I love my fanon Poland for. ^^
Did I say how glad I am you're not treating this like a kink meme? Because I am. I'm still a little stunned by the improbable outpouring of quality fics here.

Well--that would definitely fit better in my head, too. So, if I ever end up writing another fic with these fellows, I'll keep it in mind. ^_~
Also. I'm trying to test out my anon-detection skills. Were you the latest commenter on the U.S. Civil War fic?

U.S. Civil War fic? Don't think I've even read it yet, sorry. (Anon detection is hard sometimes~)
By the way, was there any particular dress you were imagining Poland wearing? I want to keep true to your vision (no matter how corny that sounds), but - Renaissance dresses weren't open-shouldered- ^^;
And now I'm wondering if it was a centuries-old dress or one he actually had sewn specifically for the occasion.

I was thinking that it wasn't actually Renaissance--just that the cut of it was less like the late 1910s than Liet was expecting, and in combination with the person wearing it, he was falsely taken back to the closest analogue he had (the Renaissance). So. I had nothing in particular in mind, but if you infused late-10s, early-20s fabric and body-shamelessness with a late-Renaissance extravagant attitude toward fabric usage and a Polish love of pretty colors, you'd pretty much get Poland's dress. (Short version: he had it made special for the occasion.)

Ah yes, that makes sense! I was thinking of adding some Rococo elements, too - do you think it might work?
... I think I'm entirely too taken with that dress! I'm on the verge of requesting a fic where a poor but proud Poland either wears a centuries-old dress, one of the few things he hasn't sold yet, or sews himself one out of curtains, like Scarlett did in Gone with the Wind.
By the way, thank you for the With Fire and Sword rec! I've just discovered that Sienkiewicz was also the author of Quo Vadis, of which I have fond memories. Added to reading list. ^^

*salutes!* Just doing my duty! Happy reading.
