Chapter 1: First day (pt 1) anonymous September 17 2008, 13:38:26 UTC
Um, so this is just a snippit, I have a bit more worked out in my head, but I thought I'd get the first bit out there for now. Also, I tried to mix all the different types of highschools, but having gone to catholic school for three years, that's kind of what I'm basing it off of. (Oh man, announcing I went to catholic school while writing on a mostly BL board, I'm sure my priest is getting chills.)

“Matt! Maaaattt! Maaaaaaaaattt!”

“I’m coming, I’m coming.”

Matthew closed his front door, juggling his crosse, his large bag, his tie, and his keys before finally manoeuvring the latter into the lock. He turned the key, listening for the click before racing down his front steps to where his friend Al was waiting impatiently on the sidewalk, twirling his own stick.

“Come on, Canada, we’re going to be late,” Al whined, shrugging his book bag higher up on his shoulder before propping his stick on it lazily. He was dressed in the mandated uniform, black pants, short sleeved white shirt with the blue school logo emblazoned on the front, and dark blue tie, but his shirt was untucked and his tie loose. He also had an almost-but-not-quite-obstinately loud belt bucket in the shape of the American flag that shone when his untucked shirt shifted. Matt couldn’t help but admire him. On Matt, it would have looked sloppy, but on Al, it just looked cool.

“Sorry, sorry,” he apologised, shifting his bag onto his back as they began walking, although inwardly he was thinking something more along the lines of And you’re never late, right? Although, he would never actually say that, it made him feel better to think it.

“This is our first day at Unity North Secondary, and we have to make a good impression if we’re going to rule that school,” his friend continued, making a fist with his free hand and pumping it for emphasis.

“Of course,” the first blond agreed with a smile that only hinted at the trepidation he felt. Unity North (or the UN as it was called) was about four times the size of their middle school, not just in area, but also in number of students. It was already daunting, but now apparently Al was insisting on pushing them in front of all those people? The thought was enough to make Matt want to turn around and hide back in his bed with the covers tucked quite firmly over his head.

“And us being the best attackman and middie this side of, well, the universe, I’m sure we’ll have no problem,” Al continued proudly. “After all, we’ll be together, right?”

“Right.” Matt’s smile became a little more relaxed. Despite all his fears, if his best friend was there, Matt was sure this year was going to go great. After all, he had never had so much fun as when Al had pushed him into things, like the time they stole the goat and locked it in their principal’s office, or when they filled all the soap dispensers with cherry jello. Not to mention the entire Middleton Newt Fiasco.

“Why is your bag so full?” Al asked, snapping Matt out of his musings by poking his bag. His eyes narrowed when he saw how much it gave underneath his finger. “You don’t have that silly bear of yours in there, do you?”

“Um,” Matt stammered nervously, pushing at the bridge of his glasses and blushing. He didn’t really want to outright lie to his friend, and Al could always tell when he was lying anyway, but on the other hand, he knew exactly what Al thought of the fact he still carried a teddy bear around.

“Maa-aatt,” Al was back to whining, “we’re starting high school. We’re practically adults. You’ve got to stop carrying that thing around.”

“He’s reassuring,” Matt said defensively, looking at the pavement that was passing beneath his sneakers. “And it’s not like I’m going to pull him out and show him off. I just like the idea that he’s there.” He wasn’t going to mention how it was his most precious possession simply because it was Al who had given it to him when they were four.

Al snorted. “Sometimes, you’re such a kid. Look, there’s the school now.”
