Poland let out a shriek and spun around, his eyes wide and heart beating erratically in his chest as he refused to meet Lithuania’s eyes. For a wild moment, he thought Lithuania would be disgusted with the way he’d been delighting in the letter’s crudity, but then he remembered that Lithuania had written the crudity in the first place. And then he reminded himself that Lithuania couldn’t read his mind anyway.
With a deep breath, Poland raised his eyes to Lithuania’s - and stared. “L-like, what happened to you?”
“Oh, this?” Lithuania asked, gesturing at his blackened right eye (seeming to forget his scratched cheeks and clearly broken nose). “It’s nothing. I just had a bit of a skirmish with Mongolia a couple nights ago.”
“Omigod, Mongolia?” Poland echoed, aghast. “Are you, like, okay? That looks like it totally hurts!”
“Really, I’m fine. He’s nothing but a nuisance, actually.”
Poland looked dubious. “Mongolia? Nuisance?” In the echo of his darkest memories, he could hear the pounding of Mongolia’s cavalry, and a shiver crawled up his spine; it was hard to imagine describing Mongolia the same way he would a fly.
“Oh, certainly! Prussia gets me worse annually. Even baby Russia has a pretty vicious bite when he wants to. Mongolia, though, feels half-hearted.”
Poland started at him. Were they talking about the same Mongolia here - the Mongolia that burned cities, raped women, and sent children to slavery? Or did Lithuania actually antagonize Prussia so much that Mongolia’s brutality really was dismissible in comparison? But even as Poland shook his head in disbelief, he grinned. Imagine calling Mongolia a mere nuisance!
“Well, I hope you sent him, like, crying home to China!” Poland said brightly, his nerves melting away as he found his stride. “But did you say we were going to have lunch? ‘Cause I’m totally hungry, and standing around like this is seriously lame.”
“Oh, yeah. Well, I know a great place for a meal and a beer! They’re normally really busy, but I’m sure I can squeeze us in.”
And before Poland could say anything in response, Lithuania had grabbed his wrist and began to drag him away. Poland spluttered in surprised, but he did not fight, and he could not help a slight smirk from creeping into his expression; Lithuania’s energy was just too infectious.
