Denying the Amber Castle [1a/?]

Horses and carts clattered by the busy time square, and vendors called out their wares from the sidelines, ignored for the most part by the bustling masses of people. At the corner of the square, a young boy of around fourteen craned his neck to peer into the depths of the crowd, searching for something - someone - that didn’t seem to be there.

Poland frowned, dropping his gaze to a leaf of paper clenched in his nervous, sweaty fist. Where was Lithuania? He’d promised he’d be here - unless . . . it didn’t seem possible, but had Poland somehow misread? His gaze darted over the spindly handwriting, and he swallowed.

Dear Poland, - so the letter was for him, at least -

I hope this letter finds you in good health. (Indeed, I would hate to think of your sparkly gaze dulled or your pert, little nose rubbed raw by the calamity of illness!) We have met scarce times before, but I believe you will remember me. After all, I can hardly think of anything but you lately!

If you would remember our last meeting - well, frankly, I’ve never been so intrigued by a person as I am by you! You are delightfully difficult to completely comprehend, and the hours we spent amusing ourselves as our bosses discussed horribly boring matters was simply the best times I’ve had in almost in a century. And, therefore, I ask of you humbly (although I would be horribly heartbroken if you refused!) if you would be so inclined as to meet me at the Vilnius town square tomorrow at noon for lunch or something. It would be wonderful to see you again!

P.S. How was my letter writing? My tutor despairs of me, but I simply cannot understand what I am doing wrong!

Poland’s cheeks felt warm. No, there was very little chance he had misinterpreted it - but, goodness, the letter was so vulgar! Didn’t Lithuania understand that it was improper to describe one not at the peak of dignity and health? Or that such endearing sentiments made it seem as if he were speaking to a romantic interest? Honestly - Poland could quite understand why Lithuania’s tutor would despair of him!

And yet - Poland’s eyes raked over the letter again and again. Indeed, the vulgarity made his stomach leap in the most delightful bounds that were assuredly sinful. But Poland could not help himself - did Lithuania really think his gaze sparkled?
