“Port Arthur,” he hears himself say at last. “If I were to return the peninsula except for Port Arthur...” That’s no good, he can tell from their faces. Ivan is still smiling but his smile has an even more condescending air - this silly boy, thinking he can keep the port. The port after all is a prize itself. “Then,” he says, “For the return of the whole of Liaodong, I will have to ask another thirty million taels indemnity.” Thirty million is nothing, next to the strategic value of the peninsula, but he will take what he can.

Yao nods, near-imperceptibly.

“So that’s settled,” says Ivan, and he moves forward now, plucking the cup from Kiku’s hand, picking him up as easily as a doll and laying him out flat on his back on the floor. Kiku, craning his neck, watches Arthur and Alfred stand and start to take their leave, half-supporting Yao between them; presumably they will collect Liaodong on the way out. Meanwhile Ivan undoes Kiku’s blue uniform, the one he modeled off Ludwig’s. Ludwig and Francis approach, with Francis looking somewhat more enthusiastic now. Kiku lies on the floor, his only unnecessary movement the turn of his head, and once he’s taken in the new state of the room that movement stops as well. Yong Su’s face has disappeared from the window. Lan Yueh’s footsteps are moving quickly away. Small concessions.

“I am glad we are such good friends,” Ivan tells him, raising and parting his legs. At the sight of them, bent and bare, he thinks for a moment that they are not his. “That way this is good for us.”

And it could be worse, Kiku thinks, surely it could be worse, otherwise he would not be choosing this. There are surely worse things than watching and feeling them take their turns, these three friends of his. He stays unresponsive as a doll, puts up his very best mask of impassivity. This manages to cool Francis’s typical ardor, and even Ivan’s parody of intimacy gradually fades. Ludwig is wholly efficient, start to finish. Once they have left, he thinks it is fortunate that they were quick.

He allows himself to continue to lie there for a count of twenty. Then he gets up, cleans off, and dresses himself, making sure every button and stray hair is in place before calling in little Lan Yueh to clear away the cups full of cold tea. She is one of the things he is allowed to keep, and he intends to show them what he can do with what he is allowed.

***

Three years later he reads news of the lease, by now little more than formality, an idle nod to Yao’s much-wounded pride. According to the agreement Liaodong peninsula will be Ivan’s for twenty-five years, not an obscene length of time, not in perpetuity (yet), but obscene in its own way. Kiku sets down the message, refolds it precisely, unfolds his hand when it forms a fist.

So this is the way of the world. He will watch, and he will learn, and he will grow, and he will act.

not OP, but I've been watching this prompt and ohmigod, thank you, this is amazing. :D

love Kiku's quiet but grudging concession, and determination to grow. Ivan is also deliciously creepy.

Thank you! :D

I've been doing a bunch of fills with Yong Su so I thought I'd try something with Kiku's perspective for a change (though the former still managed to cameo), and I'm happy that works out. Also happy you like Ivan's characterization - I was going for disturbing but not outright bats, this being pre-Bloody Sunday.

Anon, this is a perfect fill for a prompt that seemed destined to go unfilled. And I love how you added in the other countries, watching from the sidelines. Thank you ♥

Thank you back! Glad you like. At present I've actually got a text file full of links to intriguing older prompts that I'm combing through bit by bit.

I first imagined China coming along because the treaty renegotiation was highly relevant to his interests, and Korea looking on because the First Sino-Japanese War was largely over him, and it built up from there. It also seemed to add to the element of humiliation to have a direct audience.
