Catch and Hold [1/2] anonymous December 16 2008, 22:01:18 UTC
I don't know how much introspection I managed, or much of the original prompt, but I hope OP enjoys anyway. Bit of Lithuania/Russia, but nothing graphic.

He watches as Russia begins to destroy himself in earnest, all of them do, because no matter that Russia can no longer take care of himself, let alone them, they are not free to leave. Lithuania does his best in the situation, moving through Russia's broken home like a ghost, picking up glass from the floor, wiping up the blood and dirt that are constantly staining the carpets. Russia doesn't seem to care anymore, so Lithuania tries his best.

Latvia crawls into his bed in the middle of the night, and asks, "It's o-over, i-isn't it?"

"It will be soon," Lithuania replies, and for once he knows that he is speaking the truth. None of them have seen Russia in weeks, but sometimes Lithuania hears screaming and muffled sobs coming from the man's room.

He is only thankful that none of them, especially not Latvia he prays with closed eyes, are called. In the darkness of Russia's house, for none of the lights work anymore, Estonia lights candles while Lithuania curls under a blanket with Latvia shaking at his side. They whisper softly to one another of their customs, speaking is their languages, and tracing out the careful forms of Latin characters.

Russia walks in on the three of them some time not much later, when Lithuania is in the middle of a story about when he and Poland were together, doing a very bad impersonation of him, because during the war, with all the Russian filling his mind, he seems to have forgotten Polish, but Latvia is giggling through his shaking fingers, so that's alright. Russia stares at them all through foggy eyes, and begins to laugh, a horrible, twisted sound that slips like ice down Lithuania's spine. But there's something broken about that laughter too, just like the house.

He isn't nearly as intimidated as he should be. He sighs, and pulls himself to his feet, and Estonia follows, and then together they stand Latvia up in the centre, and Lithuania grabs his hand. Estonia does the same.

"Ivan," Lithuania snaps, "Shut up."

Russia looks as though he's been slapped in the face. Lithuania averts his eyes, and begins to lead his brothers, for they are a kind of family now, having to endure Russia together for so long, out of the room.

He returns to his own home, which he has not seen in much too long, and spends the night weeping as he wanders the hallways, observing all the things that have lain forgotten for so long. He doesn't sleep, because out on the streets his people are talking, are excited, and that excitement spills over onto him. He hadn't remembered that feeling, the one that came just as you kicked someone in the ribs, as you slipped a grasp and turned the tables.

Lithuania sprawls out on his carpet, dusty but still beautiful, and begins to draw up plans for a military. Russia does not like this, and Lithuania can feel him several days later, slamming his body against Lithuania's door. Where it once would have opened with a mere push, Russia has to work for nearly ten minutes to get inside.

He is sipping tea with his new bosses, but Russia ignores them and instead heads straight for Lithuania, grabbing him by the throat and slamming him against the closest wall. He can hear shocked gasps behind him, feel the rough wool of Russia's glove against the bare skin of his neck, but all he can see are stars.

Russia moans petulantly at him, "Toris, what are you doing in this dreadful place? Come home."

He continues to choke, not able to reply because of Russia's clumsy, stupid fingers crushing his windpipe, and the anger fills him so greatly that he can think of nothing else. He kicks Russia in the shin, hard as he can manage, and Russia groans painfully, dropping Lithuania to floor.

"This is my home," Lithuania says, rubbing his neck.

Russia shakes his head, and tries to come at Lithuania again, but he dodges back and around, forever a second from Russia's grasp, but that second is enough.

"You belong to me. You are one of mine. You see?" Russia links his fingers together in front of his chest, staring at them as though they were the most interesting things in the universe.

Lithuania wonders if he has truly lost his mind. "No, Ivan. I'm my own country, I always have been, even when you said I belonged to you, I was always myself."

Russia shakes his head once again, but this time it seems inevitable. Lithuania steps forward, terrified that Russia will now reach out a strong hand and grab him, drag him away to his house once again, but he merely stands, fascinated once again with his knitted fingers.

He sighs heavily, and reaches up to brush Russia's hair back into order. He hasn't been brushing it lately, Lithuania can tell, and his fingers catch and tear at tangles. He thinks he can feel Russia wince.

"Go away. Don't make this into an even bigger fight." Lithuania finishes with Russia's hair, and lets his hand fall back to his side.

Russia doesn't look up, but he nods, once.

Lithuania lets out another sigh, this time of relief, before Russia moves suddenly to capture Lithuania's lips with his own. Lithuania gasps in shock into the kiss, not because it's anything unusual to be kissed by Russia, but because this feels like a real kiss, soft and yielding, and Lithuania can feel Russia's cheeks stained with hot tears.

He closes his eyes so he doesn't have to see, and leans back to accommodate Russia's mouth, one last time, he thinks, before the world changes entirely.

Russia pulls away, and doesn't look back at Lithuania when he makes for the door, until Lithuania calls after him, "Take your soldiers with you when you go."

He watches, mesmerised, as Russia turns in the doorway, wind from the outside making his scarf swirl away from him in clouds of beige, and he says, "Soon, Toris," and the smile he gives makes Lithuania remember a similar day, long ago. The day, he thinks, that started this nightmare.

He nods his acceptance, and then Russia is gone.

Lithuania returns to his tea, and his bosses come out from the woodwork, and he works on remembering how to breathe without Russia there to steal his oxygen. In the coming years things will be very difficult, he knows, because this is not the first time he has had to pick himself up and start again.

Russia will probably have an even more difficult time, with the entire world breathing down his neck, but Lithuania stares into his tea, and wishes the best for him. He wants to see again the handsome and terrifying jewel that shone as brightly as sunshine on snow.

He wants to see Russia's eyes cleared of madness, but his hope is tinged with impossibility. He will never again be as strong as he was with Poland, and Russia will never again be an empire.

He can live with that, he thinks, so long as Russia is also never again a communist.

Holy shit, do I see a BALTIC WAY? Anon, you're too awesome. Good job also on the creepiness in the first part.

I think He wants to see again the handsome and terrifying jewel that shone as brightly as sunshine on snow. is a little too purple, though. "Handsome jewel" hasn't been a valid English phrase for a couple of centuries now.

I will join the squeeing about the Baltic Way, because I'd been dying to see it in a fic and the way you used it was wonderful!

I really liked reading about a strong, confident Lithuania, and the way Russia teetered on the brink of collapse... Nice, very very nice.

This is the first story that made me feel sorry for Russia instead of Lithuania. No other story portrayed so well the fact that Ivan actually loves Toris very much, but is too insane to show that love in a proper. I felt sad reading the part about Lithuania never being as great as he was with Poland and Russia never being an empire anymore. What a waste, they both could have been so great and such good friends.
And now I'm completely mixing up Hetalia with history.
Good job Author!anon.
