October 1949
“She,” Im Yong Su declared, “Is not. China,” and the tone of the meeting was set from there.
“No one’s saying she’s China, Su,” Alfred cut in quickly. “Not all of China. She’s just... China for now. She’s where the right government is. Like a government in exile, except not exactly because she’s China too, you see? Part of China. She’s the free bit of China. She’s the last bastion of the Republic of China. Besides, you know, Pescadores.”
The last bastion of the Republic of China (besides Pescadores), Wang Lan Yueh, sat across the table from Yong Su, hands folded. She was diminutive, dressed immaculately (Alfred thought she even looked something like a China doll, appropriately enough), and had borne a dazed expression for a while now as she absorbed her new responsibilities, her promotion from being only the island of Formosa or Taiwan. Now, though, the daze was starting to clear. Her eyes were going narrow (almost, Alfred thought, like Wang Yao’s had the last time Alfred had compared Lan Yueh to a China doll out loud). Her folded hands lifted up onto the table.
“Doesn’t look like any part of Yao,” Yong Su was saying now. “Not a little girl like her!”
“Like I said, it’s like him only in exile -”
“Yes,” said Lan Yueh abruptly. “You should know all about governments in exile, shouldn’t you? And don’t you remember who supported yours? Do Shanghai and Chungking sound familiar?”
“I remember it wasn’t Miss Goody-Goody Model Colony supporting me, that’s for sure.”
Oh shit, thought Alfred. The period of Im Yong Su and Honda Kiku’s grudging coexistence under his roof was still fresh in his memory.
Lan Yueh stood, her hands unfolded now and pressed palms down on the table. “You’re in a fine position to judge -”
“Yeah, I’m in a fine position, Yueh-meimei, or would you rather I call you imouto -”
“Go ahead and call me your little sister, just as long as you acknowledge that as long as this is going on I may as well be your elder.” Now she looked like a China doll that had been reinforced with steel and diamond, or Yao a few thousand years younger and in drag. “I may not be Yao-gege but for now I have his republic, and his human boss -”
“Yeah, that’s all true,” Alfred interrupted. “And that’s what counts here! So let’s all get along, okay? We need to stand together against the Reds.” He remembered with slight discomfort how unimpressed Yong Su had looked when he made similar arguments about Getting Along With Kiku. “I’m sure your boss agrees with me, Su, and I’m sure Yao would agree if he was in his right mind.” Well, that was an improvement to the situation at least - there was no chance in hell, right mind or wrong, Yao would have agreed about Getting Along With Kiku, and he was similarly doubtful about Yong Su’s boss. To follow, Alfred pulled out his most reliable carrot now that independence was technically achieved. “And when we get Yong Jun away from Ivan he’ll definitely be happy you stood up for democracy. What do you say?”
