____________________________________________________________ “Matt?” A hiccupped. “Matt- er. What....” He stopped by the prone figure on the floor. Mathieu snapped up like a small puppet, shaky on his feet.
“Al, you don’t need to stay.” He put his hands on his brother’s shoulders to steer him out, resisting the alluring warmth just at his finger tips. “It’s fine. Just - something with my people. It just , you know, starts to get to you and sometimes I have to wonder if I can’t help them a little more-“ He was cut off when he was leaning face first into the cool leather of Alfred’s jacket.
He nearly pulled them both down by collapsing on his brother, but Alfred manoeuvred them to the large bed in the corner. His skin was almost grey with worry, and usually clear eyes seemed dusty. Mathieu tried to control the hiccupping sobs to explain himself, but tucked against the scent of old leather it was so easy to convince himself Al was here because he did care.
Once he did calm down, he felt cold and empty, and quite a bit embarrassed. He sat up and away from warm arms slowly, resisting every urge to fall back into them.
“Matt..?”
Mathieu’s mouth work convulsively. “I - think I owe you an apology, Al. I know I shouldn’t have put all this on you, it’s not your fault.” He shook his head, chin resting against his chest. “I mean, I know you have better things to do than follow me around and make sure I’m not getting into trouble.”
Alfred sat up, “Not really actually.” His mouth twitched, like he was searching for the right words without knowing what they were. “I sorta thought - you know - when you came by a few weeks ago something wasn’t right.” The blankets yielded when Alfred moved onto his knees, cautiously approaching Matt like a startled animal.
“I just never knew how to say anything to y’a Matty. You always got on so well without anyone’s help, I sorta thought me asking you would be kinda like a pest.” His reached out for him, but Matt leaned away slightly, turning to face him.
“I can’t believe you Al. I - I’m insane. I’m just a crazy person, that crazy neighbour - you should probably run away. People like us kill household pets, because we’re that insane.” His laugh was weak and trilled even to his own ears.
“I know Matt, but that’s what makes us two peas in a pod right? In case you didn’t notice I’m still here. Plus, we don’t have any household pets.” Gravity was taking her toll on both of them, and rotational axis seemed to be just between them. He moved closer still.
And Alfred reached out and took hold of his wrist. Mathieu wasn’t trembling now, just smiling shakily with his eyes shut. He didn’t pull away and they sat there, sitting on a worn mattress in the low light of night and the sound of rain just starting, clothes rumpled beyond measure. Alfred held on.
I never know what to expect from explicitly angsty requests, but oh wow, anon--you've handled this beautifully. I really like how it's set right when Matthew's starting out on his own, and the way the added stress gradually managed to wear him down. That is some great storytelling you've got going on there, and the ending? The ending was perfect. Thanks so much for such a great fic for these guys. ♥♥♥♥ I can never get enough of 'em.
