Hello, this is my first fill with Russia. I hope it's acceptable~

Also I apologize to OP!anon; I can't quite bring myself to use human names between the nations. And I read somewhere that the name Toris in Lithuania is more of a dog's name, so ...

*

Basketball season raises Lithuania's spirits.

There isn't much to be happy about in Russia's house, at least for the Baltic States. Fortunately since World War II Prussia ("It's East, guys, East") has made a habit of drawing most of the host nation's attention, primarily by being annoying as hell, and the Baltics manage to mostly stay under the radar, which is the safest place to be.

Which is why Estonia cannot figure out why basketball season makes Lithuania happy.

Russia was the one to propose the idea (all the ideas are his, naturally, even when they aren't) of inter-U.S.S.R.-sports tournaments, like a Communist-only Olympics. He pits the nations against one another, and plays against them himself. It's rare for any of them to defeat Russia, not only because he's big and strong, but because he steals the best players from each country and trains them for himself so he can prove his superiority in the real Olympics to everyone else. (Especially America.) Basketball is the one exception to this rule. Lithuania is the USSR champion of basketball, for two years running.

The first time Lithuania beat Russia the Baltic had come down off his exhilarated exercise high and fled the court in expectation of punishment, but Russia had only laughed delightedly and declared it a good game.

The second time Lithuania beat Russia he had shaken Russia's hand like it was good sport, then gone pale when Russia crushed his fingers with a smile.

This will be the third time, if Lithuania wins, and Estonia thinks that if his older brother had any kind of survival instinct he'd purposely lose. Or at least have the good sense to be scared.

He catches Lithuania dusting the East Wing sitting room while humming (humming!) his own national anthem. Estonia clears his throat; Lithuania jumps a mile, yelping, and comes down facing Estonia. "Russia, I-I didn't even notice I was--! Oh. E-Estonia! Did you need something?" he says with a relieved sigh, a hand pressed to his heart.

Well, it doesn't appear he's completely lost his survival instinct. "I wouldn't let Russia catch you humming that treasonous song," he points out, pushing his glasses up his nose.

Lithuania smiles his apologetic smile, the one that tells Estonia absolutely nothing about his feelings. "You're right, of course," he agrees, looking down at the feather duster clutched in his hand. "It's just, for once, I'm in a good mood."

"Because of the basketball game coming up?" Estonia asks, and Lithuania has the good grace to look embarrassed. "You should forfeit." Lithuania's brows draw together at that, but he doesn't say anything, so Estonia continues. "Russia's mood is unpredictable, of course, but must you risk putting him in a bad temper? It's hard on all of us in his house, not just you. It's selfish of you."

Lithuania's grip on the duster tightens, but he doesn't smile or frown more than he already is. "So I should forfeit and crush some small joy at my house? Estonia, you should kno--" Lithuania freezes, his gaze going over Estonia's shoulder, and Estonia turns around.

"Know what?" Russia asks, cheerful. Neither of the elder Baltics can come up with an answer quickly enough, but fortunately Russia's in quite a fine mood. He's carrying a bundle over his shoulder, which he unceremoniously dumps at Estonia's feet. "Please clean this up before you continue your duties, yes?"

Estonia collapses to his knees next to the smallest Baltic country, who has apparently been knocked cold by his own basketball match with Russia.

"LATVIAAAAA~~!"

LOL TENSE CHANGE. whoops. Didn't notice until I was almost finished with this part, so sorry. >_>;

IN WHICH Lithuania is Cinderella.

Despite Estonia's warning words, Lietuva's mood only continued to rise in the week proceeding the game - not only because he anticipated a win, but also because the match meant he would be with his own people, even if it was only for a brief time. The only thing that could bring him down was Russia's immediate presence, which increased daily (he popped up at the strangest times - in the midst of the Baltics eating breakfast, which resulted in a spectacular collective spit-take; while Lithuania was seeing to the tuning of the piano (he almost broke the stand and slammed the lid on his own backside); doing transcriptions, and he'd ruined a page by tearing straight through the paper with his pen at the Russian's voice) and culminated three days before the match.

"I want to host a party," Russia said by way of greeting while Lithuania was cleaning the dishes.

How a man his size could move so quietly was a question Lithuania had stopped asking himself long ago. He seized up helplessly as usual, fingers tightening on the cup he was wiping dry, and when he drew a shaking, steadying breath and resumed his work he couldn't stop his hands from trembling. "Of course, Mr. Russia," he said as cheerfully as he could. "When did you want to hold it?" he asked, half-turning towards Russia and trying to gauge his current mood.

Russia stood by the fridge, smiling. The smile by itself meant nothing, but he wasn't crowding Lithuania and he was relatively relaxed in his stance, so it was probably not time to drop the cup and run for his life. Probably.

"Hmm ..." Russia pressed a finger to his chin and thought about it. "I think four days from now. It will be a Sunday, and many of the Party Members will be able to come. Won't that be nice?"

Lithuania did not let his submissive smile slide off his face. "O-Of course," he stammered, but what he thought was four days!? That's not enough time! The whole house will have to be cleaned and the invitations sent out, grocery shopping and food preparation, and with the rationing we'll clean out the coffers anyway, and all the paperwork will have to be finished beforehand and--! And most of this work will fall to me. .... Oh.

He tried not to let his realization of what Russia was doing show on his face, but Russia's easy smile seemed to gain a sinister edge. "That is possible, yes? I know Litvos can do this job. You're so reliable." He took a few steps forward, close enough now to loom over Lithuania. "I hope this won't effect our basketball match."

Lithuania bit his tongue hard enough to draw blood. He studied the teacup in his hand as if it were the most interesting thing in the world. "Y-yes, we - I - can -- n-no, of course this won't e-effect the match; I'm looking forward to it." This much, at least, wasn't a lie.

"Oh, good! I'm happy to hear this." Russia leaned down and despite his anger Lithuania felt his Russia-induced tremors increase to outright shaking; his heart pounded. "It would be a shame if Litvos decided to forfeit because he was too tired," he said, sweet, in Lithuania's ear.

Lithuania stiffened. Russia had heard Estonia after all!

"Well, I shall not worry about it because I have your word," Russia said, straightening but not moving away. "And you are so very good about keeping your word, yes?"

Lithuania did not have a reputation for keeping his word. (First in line for independence, even when he ran right into Germany's arms like a fool--)

"Yes, R-R-Russia," Lithuania stammered, and choked when Russia clapped him hard on the back and then left the room, humming the Soviet anthem.
