Meeting at Montgomery's 2/2

Arthur’s ire rose. “You would be nowhere without me,” he said, his voice an angry snap. “I have subsidised your goods. I have loaned you money, and protected your borders against Alfred and his invasions. If it wasn’t for me, you would probably cease to exist all together.”
“I know!” Matthew exploded, hurling the cup against the wall with such a force, that it shattered into a shower of white porcelain and several blackened stones fell in on each other. “I know! You think I don’t realise that? You think I don’t understand exactly what is at stake here?”
He finally turned towards Arthur, and the Brit was surprised to see tears tracking down his face, making rivulets in the grime. He hadn’t heard the tears in Matthew’s voice at all.
“I love you,” Matthew continued, calmer now, wiping at his face with his sleeve. “I don’t want to leave. I just wish you would show me the same respect you would show someone of Kent or Gloucestershire. Give me a voice to be heard with.”
“And will you continue to fight for this voice if I don’t?” Arthur asked, staring at Matthew assessingly.
Matthew’s blue gaze never wavered. “I will.”
There was a certain steady, determined face Matthew wore occasionally. Arthur met it once on the Plains of Abraham. Alfred had seen it during the Hundred Years War when he had attempted to invade. Matthew wore it again now.
Arthur sighed internally, but kept his face stern. “I will send Lord Durham,” he said sharply. “I will make my decisions based on his recommendations.”
Matthew nodded, and Arthur turned to leave.
“You will not regret it,” Matthew said softly, hopefully, thankfully.
“Only time will tell that,” Arthur replied with a soft shake of his head. He left Matthew standing in the tavern, and didn’t look back.

Beautifully done, anon! There just isn't enough fanstuff for these two at all, and it's depressing because their interaction is so complex and goes in so many directions at once at any given time. I love the tensions here, Matthew with his teacup and his anger (Matthew angry is always an event), Arthur also angry but listening--you've captured part of the dynamic I love so much. Great job. ♥
