Re: Northern Ties 1b/~ anonymous August 4 2012, 02:39:52 UTC
America’s visits had started with asking advice for small things - “Prussia keeps traipsing around like he single-handedly got me independence - I’m thankful, but goodness gracious,” and “I’m half-afraid to go to Georgia because Spain keeps eyeing me in a way I don’t like” - that eventually evolved into bigger problems. England’s first conversation with Canada where the latter felt like an equal instead of a colony was right after the American Revolution. England had knocked on his door and after trying to initiate a greeting had just started crying and re-telling the entire tornado of his feelings for the past three decades in a half-sobbed ramble that was heartbreaking just to listen to. It was the first time Canada felt anger towards America, and as he burned down the White House decades later Canada would remember the feeling of holding England and trying to make him stop crying--he never really forgot how sweet that revenge was. (That’s passive-aggression for you.)

The years went on and the scars healed and America and England continued to visit, and that was alright.

What was slowly not becoming alright, however, was the surprising amount of ridiculousness threaded with cowardice that had been plaguing America and England for the past few decades. At some point in those years England wonderingly came to the revelation that he was in love with Alfred. At another point in that time frame, America had loudly burst into Canada’s home and after checking that no one but the panicked Canadian was home had declared that he was in love with Arthur.

Their realizations were perfect- then and now. Canada had seen enough of their interaction with each other over the years to come to this conclusion much sooner, but he couldn’t help the bubble of happiness he felt for his brother and former colonizer. Alfred was impossible, simply impossible sometimes, but his vibrancy, perpetual optimism, and good humor were …obnoxious, a lot of the time, but charmingly obnoxious. (If such a thing was possible, America would be the one to pull it off.) Alfred was family and despite the way they got on each other’s nerves and the pure amount of shenanigans the American got him involved in, Canada wanted him to be happy. Not the forced happiness America tried to enwrap himself in when the world got a little too cruel, but complete happiness that would fill the void that fueled his desire to be a hero. England would also be much happier, and the former Empire would get back the only thing he had wanted in the last five centuries of his life.

All the two of them had to do was confess, and a couple that had been going strong in the race for The Longest Continuous Stream of Unresolved Sexual Tension would finally be able to overcome their pasts and cement their Special Relationship.

This, as Canada probably should have seen coming, did not happen.

According to America, England was not one for heroic declarations of love, for France made those declarations all the time (sans the heroic part) and all it got him was a colorful bruise. Despite all his bravado (read: letting his inner hero shine) America wasn’t quite prepared for possible rejection.

According to England, he would rather die than suffer some undoubtedly loud and humiliating rejection from the American. The wonderful thing about crushes and love from afar was that one could love peacefully without the ups and downs of a relationship and the security that one could never be rejected.

And would you look at that, already title failing.

Canada had nodded shakily at England’s response and chosen not to say anything. He knew that the truly wonderful thing was that their relationship was so painfully obvious to the rest of the world that there wasn’t much of a chance of another country actively pursuing one of them. This had persuaded Canada not to just come out and tell the two of them they should get over their insecurities and tell the other how they felt. (There was also the fact that America made him partake in a very, very elaborate mix between a pinky promise and a blood oath to never tell England his feelings. In addition, England made him vow in front of a faerie ring to never speak of his affections without express permission.) Another, more romantic reason, was that inevitably it would be much, much sweeter to see the two of them get together on their own. It was the kind of thing Hollywood loved and the hopeless romantic in England secretly wished for. It was certainly happening, if Canada was any judge, but it was at a painfully slow pace.

The two countries went to movies together, sporting events, lunches, and once England had even gotten America up to visit Stonehenge. Nothing really romantic had happened at any of these outings, either due to America’s obliviousness or England’s cryptic behavior, depending on who you asked.

Now if only the two of them could tell each other all the things they liked about the other as much as they told Canada, maybe they could get somewhere.

Not!OP.

I laughed out loud for several parts of this, and I distinctly remember melting a bit at "Not the forced happiness America tried to enwrap himself in when the world got a little too cruel, but complete happiness that would fill the void that fueled his desire to be a hero." I just love that characterization for America. ♥

And I just can't wait to see more of this, to see when that UST/UET (E for Emotional) gets worked out. :)

Seconding the sentiments above!

Also the "very, very elaborate mix between a pinky promise and a blood oath" line is perfect. Absolutely perfect.

F5ing for the next part!

Anon has been researching declassified diplomatic papers and it's hilarious how much it reminds one of silly Hetalia ship fic when the American diplomats call up the Canadian diplomats to bitch about the UK.

Oh Anon! If it weren't for a few lines at the beginning (all of which are perfectly fine by the way), I would have thought I wrote this myself! It's PERFECT, and EXACTLY what I wanted, and afjdfhdjfbhdjdchsbj I love you so much. Thank you for this! I love it! Can't wait for the next part!

(And omg do I see implications of Franada??? I'm serious about thinking I wrote this)

Wow... Just... I've already melted into a pile of USUK and Canada-loving fangirl mush here.

India may have been the jewel in Victoria’s crown, but America was the centerpiece of England’s heart, and 236 years hadn’t changed that fact.

There's just something very, very heartwarming about that, I couldn't help but "Awww..." at it. You have a way for writing that's just so heartfelt. Yet, at the same time, you manage to make this funny as it was intended to with the situation and I think I lost count of what made me laugh in this fic so far. Gotta love this part very much though:

All the two of them had to do was confess, and a couple that had been going strong in the race for The Longest Continuous Stream of Unresolved Sexual Tension would finally be able to overcome their pasts and cement their Special Relationship.

QUOTED FOR TRUTH. \o/

Author!anon, consider yourself with one happy camper!anon here eagerly awaiting for the continuation of this fic.

Keep up the good work!
