"You would notice, my friend, that I have made no mention of a certain American nation. Although, that being said, I have been around longer than you, England, I know a thing or two about feelings. I remember your face the first time I saw you, not just the traders that came to my land. You were in a state after you lost him. You are making the face you always make when you are 'forced' to discuss him." As if England would ever miss a chance to talk about a certain former colony. It made a certain amount of sense on one level, the young nation was shaping up to be something important. He had the resources and the brains to be great when he wasn't trying to start fights with his neighbors. Well, India supposed, they all had to be moody teenagers at some point. If it stopped at politics, India wouldn't have thought anything of England's fixation. But there was much more to it, England himself, the slightly gangly living nation, had a soft spot for his former ward.

"He was an economic and political failure that was all!" England rebutted. That was always the excuse. He would argue the boy was some kind of example to be made. He wouldn't let anyone do that to him ever again.

"Perhaps to your government, however, I think he was much more to you." India replied. He watched England's facial expressions as they cycled from frustrated anger to embarrassment. He looked away, staring out into the trees around the property. He fell into silence, seeming to try to collect himself as he picked up his tea cup and took a shaky sip.

"Forgive me, that was not my place to say." India said, letting the topic drop. England made some kind of sound of agreement, but not much more. It was quiet for a moment. Until one of the young boys crashed headlong into the tea table, sending the teapot flying. The boy laughed and jumped back off the porch.

"Australia!" England yelled, jumping up from his chair. The boy in question ran off into the trees. Canada appeared suddenly, looking apologetic. India idly wondered whether the boy had been eavesdropping on their conversation. The boy was often sensitive about England's attentions to his brother.

"Sorry England, I'll go get him." Canada said and took off after his younger brother, chasing him into trees with New Zealand in tow. India chuckled.

"That one is spirited."

"Spirited, that's one way to describe him." England sat back down in his chair, absentmindedly reaching for the teapot that was no longer there. India could sense that there were more words behind his statement. Australia had been founded around the time he had lost America, and for a while he had paid a great deal of attention to the lad, but that didn't last long. Even as a young colony, Australia knew that he wasn't necessarily living up to expectations, even though he certainly became valuable...

The rest of the conversation of so many years ago faded, as his mind was brought back to the present. There were sighs of relief as a break was called and they left in groups. India couldn't help but smile as he watched England slip out a side door with America, chuckling. It wasn't exactly a secret how the couple was going to spend their time.

He smiled a bit about how he could tease the man later for it, the same indignant look would probably cross his face now as it did in the past. Maybe he would save it for the next Commonwealth meeting so that everyone could get in on it. It was just a bit of playful payback after all. Everyone had always known that England himself had something for America, but only time told what it was.

Oh, Anon! Not!OP is awestruck. This is just lovely. I like how you incorporated the other colonies without making it angsty or jealous. India POV was a nice nod to the argument going on above and everything was perfect. Noting just how old India is, and making a point that it was Alfred who was Arthur's favorite, rather than America holding an extra importance to England. Also, teen Canada babysitting his little siblings is so much love.

Oh Australia, baby, you're just too precious, let me cuddle you.

And of course, the USUK is much appreciated. You captured their relationship wonderfully.

Thank you for the compliments, Anon! I've never ever tried to write anything with India involved before (and I don't think I've ever actually seen anything that includes him) so I wanted to give him a try and the folks arguing up above inspired me to try and to give OP!Anon something for making a cute and interesting request.

Well done, a!anon.

Baby!Oz is the cutest. Too bad there's only one decent fanart of him.

The arguments about India and America's relationships with England remind me of Graham Greene's novel, The Quiet American. So much twisted emotion under the surface..

Thank you. :)

He is really adorable. It's really a shame that there isn't more fanart of him.

I'm currently in the midst of the British Empire class, India and England's relationship is quite twisty. I would love to see more fanfic of it.
