My Home is Here (Notes) anonymous December 11 2011, 09:23:57 UTC
Notes :

1. I’ve never been to the Netherlands even once. My grandmother and aunts who frequently went to Indonesia to escape winter have speaks perfect Indonesian. But my cousins could barely speak Indonesia and had speaks slightly accented English. It was hard to speak to them when I was little and had limited knowledge on English.

2. My family is a family of immigrants… who immigrated to yet another country in one generation. Well, those were hard times.

3. Indonesian ‘rubber clock/time’ means you need an extra hour or two when doing anything. Especially during informal things like throwing a birthday party. Last week I went to a party that supposed to start at 06:00pm but people only start arriving at 08:30pm. Even airlines frequently come late.

4. The Netherlands are pretty brutal to Indonesian back in the days. But both countries are trying to mend things now… Beside, from what my grandmother told me, there’s a lot of Indonesians there and there are many Indonesian festivals and foods in the Netherlands. Maybe it was only in her area, though. But she did say that I would be perfectly at home there, except for the 4 season thing.

5. Brothers and Sisters mean the other Asians.

6. I’m sorry to Wang Yao, but despite being almost 100% Chinese (both of my parents’ parents are Chinese immigrants), the language is totally off-limit to me. Even Japanese and Russian look less of a ‘squiggly-worm’ than it! My father spoke natively, though.

7. It’s true that the younger generation liked to degrade and mock Indonesia. There’s also a lot of rallying and unhappy mob when the government done something. A lot of our cultures are in danger because of the younger generation‘s lack of interest. Ironically, foreigners are the one to preserve and learn said culture.

8. Despite my many complains, I really can’t think of moving elsewhere. Especially places with 4 seasons. I like the mild weather of Indonesia.

9. My Indonesia OC is a total fail. And he’s a crybaby too. Well, when your culture (and by extension, yourself) are dying because of your own people, he had a valid reason?

10. Radical Muslim groups sometime bombed churches during holy days. Especially Christmas. We had officers stationed at churches just in case.

11. Indonesia is quite close to America… and Russia. You’d be surprised how WELL that went during the Cold War. They’re playing tug-o-war with us. Hey, at least Ivan will have a friend if Himaruya decided to make Indonesia. And Alfred will try to take him away. Threesome?

12. But then the Netherlands will be mad if they do. Did anybody realize how much of a Netherlands/Indonesia fan I am?
(Hopefully, those two next to Vietnam and Thailand during the Halloween strips are Indonesia and Malaysia. Dibs on the boy as Indonesia)

I'm really sorry to OP if this was way off your request. And that I feel really awkward to do a pairing. By the way, for those who really don't know where Indonesia is, here a hint : Bali is a part of Indonesia.

asdfhweadf god no, this fill is love <3 fellow writer!anons just keep surprising me with more lovely little fills, where I though I would be lucky for my prompt to get even one XD I loved your oc~ You did have a lot of great things in this fill, all of which I found incredibly awesome and insightful for the history of the country, and I loved reading your notes about it all in the end <3

I really hope that Himaruya makes Indonesia into an actual character; some of these nations need more love D:

Thank you, OP Anon!! anonymous December 12 2011, 10:03:07 UTC
Hehe, your praise make me blush. I'm happy to be able to show off about my country, be it the negative or positive things. Indonesia is not really well-know, but I think Himaruya had showed interest in creating one, so I'm pretty hopeful right now~

Again, thank you~!!

Hello, Indonesian!Author, meet Indonesian!Lurker who is both Chinese and Christian as well XD

This is truly a wonderful fic! I must say I kept on grinning while reading this fic because of how similar your situation and your thoughts on Indonesia are to mine. I have relatives all over as well (though unfortunately none in the Netherlands, I'd love to visit the country more), I can't speak Mandarin even though I studied it at school and had a tutor for 6 years, but my disinterest in it made me forget almost everything now, which is quite a shame. And yes, I call myself an Indonesian rather than Chinese. What can I say, despite our country's negative traits and all that, I still love Indonesia :) And besides, China has more than enough people already anyway XP

Ah, but I do have to disagree with you at some points. Airplanes delay in Indonesia isn't that bad. My plane once got delayed for almost 12 hours in China, though it was probably because of the bad weather. And I must say that I feel that young people nowadays actually are having more and more sense of nationalism and are starting to do more for our country. The one who sadly don't do that and only complain are the generation who were very aware of "those hard times" namely my parents' generation which really saddens me.

True, there are threats from radical groups, but I for one, am glad that Indonesia is a religious country. My friend who lives in a secular country said that her friends usually make fun of her for her religious beliefs. Ah, and tolerance is actually easy to find here, just that people seem to like to focus on the minor non-tolerant people.

I also think that Indonesia is quick to forgive people, because even though we fought so hard to be rid of the Netherlands, in the end we just keep on pairing Indonesia with the Netherlands XD Though that's probably the fangirls' fault (and I bet my money on Indo-tan being a girl. I used to like the idea of boy Indonesia, but now I find it much more attractive if it's a girl).

Also I direct this last sentence to all you non-Indonesian out there: Bali is a part of Indonesia and not the other way around, okay?! :)

(First captcha says 'internacionale' Refresh. Second captcha says 'success.' Does this mean Indonesia will obtain more international success/recognition? Yay! XD)

Hello, Indonesia!Buddy who shared my history of being unable to learn Mandarin even though I've puked my brain out from over study~!

I'm happy to hear that younger generations having more sense of generation nowadays. I'm actually speaking from my point of view, since most of my schoolmates run off to other countries once they finished high school. That and how much they complained about Indonesia. As for planes, it's true that the delays were not very bad, but lets just say that 3 hours including the ridiculously long immigration line and picking up bags? Honestly, those took a very long time for me.

As for the threats, I'm just adding it there for the sake of having a 'fact', as per the request. I'm also happy that Indonesia is a religious country, since that means we use our heart more than our mind. And that could have a big impact on how we view and treat people.

And for the Netherlands, Wiki-Fu! On the page of Indonesia-Netherlands relations, it was said that the two countries are not in a comfortable relation because of the fact that Netherlands housed two Separatist groups of West Papua and North Maluku.

Speaking with another shipper makes me want to make an omake about them....

I guess I'm guilty of running off to other countries as well then XP But the Indonesian community in my uni is pretty proud of our country. Once a year we have an Indonesian Night Market and flag ceremony on Independence day. I guess I just hear worse things about Indonesia from adults than my friends. Haha, I have to agree with you on the immigration line and baggage claim. They are always such a pain! XP

Ah, politics...*shrug* Well, that won't stop us shippers, right? XD

Go, go make it!! :D
