Hanatomago has an easy life.

She doesn’t like Finland’s idea of satisfactory dog food but she eats it anyway, making sure to appropriately wag her tail and certify that her owner is pleased with her. When Finland leaves her for the day she wanders off and finds Sweden, because Sweden always gives her Malaco sweets when she gives him her best puppy-dog eyes. (It’s not hard to do, considering puppy-dog is her eyes’ default setting). And Hanatamago always rounds off her day by spending time with Sealand until he gives her far too much from his cupboard, showering her with tasty snacks and strange-coloured drinks that are always the highlight of her day.

Perhaps Hanatamago’s life does, to some extent, revolve around food, but she’s never found reason to complain about it. She’s perfectly content with lying out in the sun on her back with her paws in the air, lazing around after filling her stomach with everything delicious she could find.

Her best friend is Sealand’s seagull. He doesn’t have a name because he doesn’t want one so Hanatomago just calls him Gull. He seems to like it, squawking and dancing whenever he sees her walking towards him at the end of the day. She says she’s just there for the food Sealand offers her but a part of her is secretly there because she likes spending time with Gull. He understands her. He’s a really good listener and he knows good snacks when he sees them.II

Though Mr. Puffin acts loyal and devoted to Iceland, he really isn’t. He has a ‘legitimate business’ on the side that he has to run, keeping it well hidden from Iceland’s prying eyes. He knows Iceland will never suspect him but he keeps his work secret, just in case, as it simply wouldn’t do for Iceland to find out that his dear pet puffin runs a mafia syndicate.

Iceland is nice. He’s quiet and unassuming so Mr. Puffin doesn’t have any problem living with him, acting as his representative in the puffin world and building up trade links with the puffin population. But Mr. Puffin counts his ‘legitimate business’ as his real reason for living, not the tasks Iceland sets him. The work he does for Iceland is... more like a hobby. Unremarkable, simplistic and good for use as an alibi, should the cops ever come sniffing just a little bit too close to home.

And who in the world would ever suspect a country’s pet as being behind bank heists and grand robberies in art galleries? Mr. Puffin is good at his work because he knows how to carry out daring crimes without being detected. Nobody ever finds any trace of him at the scene and his men- various birds, owls and sparrows and even one or two robins- are always meticulous with covering their tracks.

Mr. Puffin is a leading figure in the criminal underworld of the bird kingdom. As he admires the Mona Lisa he’d snuck out from under France’s nose, he decides he wouldn’t have it any other way.

Tinkerbell sighs. England is snoring, sprawled across his bedroom floor after he collapsed there last night and didn’t even try getting to his feet again. He’d been drinking to celebrate Hallowe’en (because England has always treated Hallowe’en as such an important thing, getting in touch with old Prime Ministers and deceased Monarchs) but when he’d tried to go to bed after getting home he hadn’t quite managed to get to the bed without passing out.

She prods him with her wand in an attempt to wake him up- she wouldn’t mind having to help him, if it didn’t happen so often. It seems, every other weekend, England does something ridiculous and she’s the only one of his supernatural friends that can be bothered to sort him out- they always have something better to do, gambling or going to the cinema or even drinking themselves (because they can handle their liquor better than England). It’s just Tinkerbell that’s left behind to help her nation; she doesn’t necessarily mind.

“Wake up,” she demands into his ear, hovering next to his face. The breeze generated by her wings ruffles his fringe and it looks like his eyes flicker but she can’t be sure. “Wake up!”

“Sorry,” England mutters, one eye opening and a weak smile spreading across his lips. “How long was I out for?”

“Too long,” she says. “Get up.”

Peter and Wendy probably miss her; Tinkerbell knows she should go back to her own realm but England is her country, after all, even though he’s technically from another dimension of existence. Still, she stays by his side, partly because he’d never be able to manage without her and partly because... well, because she maybesortofloveshim but it’s nothing important. She can afford to stay with him for a while longer- Peter and Wendy can wait.IV

Tony is on Earth to observe humans. That was the brief for his mission, but he soon found himself far more interested by nations. The way they interact, forming relationships at the drop of a hat and breaking them just as quickly, is fascinating.

His routine is simple- he contacts his home in the mornings, he eats whatever he likes the look of in the kitchen (including sometimes the furniture when he mistakes it for human food), he watches America go about for a few hours, and then he heads back home to kick back and play Earth video games for the rest of the day. He’s slacking on his report about Nation behaviour, he knows, but he also knows America so well that he doesn’t have to stick by his side all the time.

Tony often challenges Gilbird on Xbox Live. Gilbird is far too good at COD and Tony considers hacking once in a while, just to show Gilbird he’s not as skilled as he thinks he is. It wouldn’t do for Tony to let Gilbird become too arrogant, of course. Occasionally that horse of Poland’s joins in and he’s absolutely terrible at playing- all he ever does is blow himself up with grenades or make the game lag by trying way too much at once. Tony likes playing against Pony, because Pony always loses.

When Thailand’s elephant plays, however, it is never a good thing. Toto is a beast when he gets a Dragunov sniper rifle. Nobody messes with Toto, not even Tony.

Kumajirou likes sleeping. In fact, it’s his favourite thing to do. He hates it when Canada wakes him up for silly things like “we’re going to be late for the meeting” and “America’s coming over later so get up and help me clean the house” or “oh God the house is on fire we’ve got to run”. Kumajirou just wants to sleep.

He’s not lazy, he’s just storing his energy. His owner is quite laid-back so he is too, but he takes his relaxed personality to a new level. Though his passion for excessive resting irritates Canada, Kumajirou refuses to stop. He’s waiting for something interesting to happen and when that day comes he certainly won’t be lazy then.

Besides, if he wants to be larger than Australia’s koala he needs to grow, so if he’s constantly refreshed he knows he’ll probably end up getting bigger faster. He has an unspoken competition with that damn koala. Kumajirou knows he can win, he just needs to snooze his way to victory.VI

The Zashiki-warashi that lives with Japan likes to think of Japan as her father. He doesn’t even see her but she still associates him with a parental role and she’s even given herself the name Kikumi Honda so she sounds like she’s his daughter. The Zashiki-warashi likes Japan’s house because there’s a lot to do- she spends her time in his hot springs, scaring his guests and playing with the Kappas that roam the grounds.

Her life is not, as people might have visitors believe, boring or lonely. Whenever she has free time and nothing else to do, she writes songs.

Every song she writes is based on an aspect of her country that she finds interesting. From tales about grand Emperors to narratives about tragic love stories, she has many songs. They’re put to light, airy tunes because she plays the Biwa and she’s excellent at building up atmosphere with it.

She hasn’t given up on being acknowledged like Kappa and Youkai have. She didn’t leave for the mountains; she stayed because. It’s because she knows that, one day, and if she keeps playing, Japan will hear her music.end

woah, so many characters *A*

The switching from the lazyness from Hanatamago and Kumajirou to the hijinks from Puffin and Tony and everyone, and thinking of how Toto was able to compete with Tony made me grin. I like the idea that the zashiki warashi likes to write songs, thank you for filling!

Whoa, these were so well-written and imaginative, and they all just fit so well with what we've seen of the companions!
