(Spain&Roma) Cappuccino and Paella [8] anonymous September 2 2011, 20:55:43 UTC
“I know this story, and the protagonist reminds me of you, doesn’t he? Lonely, bitter, and looking for someone to care for him.” Romano raised his eyes to meet Antonio’s, and even though he wanted to punch the other man in his face, he couldn’t stop the warm feeling that rose in his chest as he watched those hazel eyes sweep over his face. Antonio’s smile faded as he noticed how serious Romano looked, and their eyes locked. Neither could look away, although Romano desperately wanted to. How long had he been ensnared within those brilliant eyes? One hundred, two hundred years? Five hundred years? One thousand? Did it even matter anymore?

“I love you,” Romano suddenly blurted out, although he immediately covered his face with the book. Antonio reeled back as if he had been slapped, opened his mouth, closed it, and just stared at Romano, who was now reduced to a quivering mass behind his book.

“I love you, too,” Antonio responded, and he reached out and lowered the book to see Romano’s eyes wide. Antonio licked his lips and slid his hand down to Romano’s, lacing their fingers together and giving Romano’s hand a gentle squeeze. “You can finish the story, I promise I’ll be quiet.” Romano finally tore his gaze from his lover’s face and returned to the book.

“...He hadn’t always been lonely, but times had changed and he was left with just one house, a garden, and a series of jars, one of which contained a human heart.” Romano looked up at Antonio.

“It’s his wife’s heart,” Romano said.

“I know,” Antonio said, and he leaned in slowly, slow enough that Romano closed his eyes and was taken aback when Antonio pressed his gentle kiss to his lips. It wasn’t nearly as intoxicating or lusty as the previous ones had been, but this time, it was just pressing together, moving their lips at the same time, embracing each other in their favorite way of all.

This fic was already a behemoth, so I didn't want to drag it out more. I got most of the day, though. Btw, this is authornon from above.

I am so happy now. anonymous September 2 2011, 23:43:38 UTC
An Italian wouldn't drink wine first thing in the morning, not even with orange juice. Mimosa is Italian, but it's something that one drinks typically just before dinner, to wet your appetite. Drinking wine in the morning is a true no-no, especially if you need to have all your wits about you like Roma does here.

I'm nitpicking this in case you decide to correct this before you deanon, because it is seriously the only thing that I didn't like in this fic. Yeah, this small, tiny, silly nitpick is the only thing. The rest, the characterization, the setting, the slow pace, the descriptive but not extra-flowery writing style, the sun drenching everything, the description of food - which is an important part of Mediterranean life! - Spain being carefree but not stupid, Romano being competent and still grumpy but kind and obviously in love, the absurdly sensual lovemaking, all those thousand small touches like the fact that they're still worried about the economic situation, or that they're at Romano's house for a change, or that they're actual people who have lives and a job beside each other...That, I loved every second of that.

Oh, wait, fettuccine cook way fast, like 4 or 5 minutes tops, spaghetti or even better penne would work better there. Here, that's it. The only other wrong thing. The rest is perfect.

Damn, I envy those two so much. Also, what book is that they're reading? I totally should know, shouldn't I?

o///o oh goodness, thank you kind anon for your comment! Trust me, I fully appreciate the crits. I not only a) have family in Italy/am Italian, Ive b) been to Italy. (There was a day where we had wine with every meal, and it was a Saturday. That's where it came from!) but I will remember that. As for the pasta... eh I just didn't think about timing very well.

But I'm really glad you liked it! I tried to reach outside the box with them, I really feel like Romano is a very passionate person and, if he were with someone it's because he really loves them and wouldn't be able to help showing how much he loves his partner. Y'know? Fics where it's just abuse abuse abuse make me sad, because they're such a lovely couple. Again, thank you so much!!!

Oh, and er anonymous September 3 2011, 01:56:54 UTC
The book they're reading isn't real, I just made it up. When I was writing this part I was listening to a song called "Jar of Hearts" and that's what I based the random short story on. :D

I don't normally read Spamano fics because of how they're characterised, but you made them so lovely. It's nice to see Romano being not tsun-tsun, but tsun-dere.

This. Was. PERFECT. I love love love your characterizations of Romano (yay for him being truly tsundere and not just tsuntsun!) and Spain (yay for him being cheerful but not stupid and actually a tad mischevious at times!) and I am definitely going to reread this lovely fill when I'm not feeling so fatigued -- even in my current sleep-deprived state, this put a huge derpy grin on my face.
