In 1938, the House of Representatives authorized the government to investigate the following,

“(1) the extent, character and objects of un-American propaganda activities in the United States (2) the diffusion within the United States of subversive and un-America propaganda that is instigated from foreign countries or of domestic origin and attacks the principles of the form of government as guaranteed by our Constitiution…”

The living room was filled with the buzzing static of the television while America was sprawled out, face down on the couch. He was still dressed in his suit from the meeting that day; his glasses were skewed, his tie loosened around his neck, and his jacket hanging haphazardly over the back of the couch. He would have usually been full of energy at this point in the day, but today contained another long, drawn out world meeting. He’s had more responsibility to handle since the ending of the war, since he was the only country thriving while the rest of the world was still rebuilding the pieces. America was helping rebuild though. Thanks to the ideas of the Secretary of State George Marshall1, America was lending billions of dollars to the European nations to help rebuild cities and get the countries back on their feet. America didn’t mind, he was actually quite happy that he could be the hero for his fellow nations, speaking of European nations…America turned his head over to the coffee table where he had placed the phone. Before he had plot down on the couch, he had dragged the phone over to the table to patiently await the phone call he had been anticipating all afternoon. If he wasn’t so tired, he would have been jumping up and down on the couch in excitement. America just laid there, listening to the white noise of the television while staring at the carpet, wondering where that dark stain had come from. He turned over on the couch to watch the fan swirl around on the ceiling above him instead. This was getting ridiculous, when the hell was he going to call?

That’s when the phone started to ring. Just before the second ring, America quickly picked up the phone,

“About time baby cakes, I have been waiting hours for you to call.”

“G-git, how the hell did you know it was me calling? And how many times do I have to tell you not to call me that ridiculous nickname?” the Brit on the other end retorted.

America laughed, “Come on. It’s just a cute pet name to show how much I love you.”

England just scoffed, and that only made America laugh harder. He could only imagine him on the other side of the phone turning three shades of red. This only caused England to get more irritated with him.

“Shut up, you wanker. If you’re just going to laugh in my ear and not have an actual conversation with me, I’m going to hang up the phone.”

America wiped the tears from his eyes, suppressing anymore giggling, “Sorry England, but your just too cute sometimes.”

England huffed, “Whatever, git.”

America just smiled into the phone, he loved talking so openly with England and frankly they didn’t get to do it enough. He always had to watch what he said to him around other nations or people, but when they talked over the phone or in private, they could just be themselves and honestly express their feelings to one another. It was one of the few time America felt totally at ease.

“When are we meeting at the restaurant tonight, babe?” America asked.

“Be there at 7 o’ clock sharp, and dress nicely dear. We are going to a nice restaurant for once, so you can’t just throw something on tonight.”

“I know babe, I will clean up nicely for you. Though if everything goes right, you are probably just going to take them of---“

“Shut up you git, don’t be talking about that when I’m still angry at you for what you did during the meeting.”

“Come on, he started it.”

“I don’t care who started it, you engaged in a staring contest with Russia for a good solid hour. Everyone in the room was on edge, no one knew what you too were about to do. You two wouldn’t stop until the meeting was called for a break.”

“You know me England, I wouldn’t do anything stupid. He’s the one who shouldn’t be trusted, especially since late last year when he started testing those nuclear weapons. Who knows what that commie bastard is going to do with them?”

“America, you were the first to test nuclear weapons. What about Bikini Island four years ago2? Was that really necessary or were you just trying to put a point across to certain nations?”

“England, we were trying to figure out all the affects of the weapon. We weren’t planning on showing off the shiny, new bomb; we just wanted to better understand it ourselves. Besides, England, don’t you trust me to do the right thing? We are allies. Not just allies, but partners.”

England sighed, “I trust you America, but sometimes it can get scary for the rest of us in between you two. I love you to death and I don’t want to see you get hurt. The scariest part is that you are more powerful than you have ever been and I don’t think you realize just how powerful you have become.”

“I understand that I have become a lot more powerful since the war ended. I promise you England, I will be responsible. I just can’t trust that commie bastard. Who knows what will happen if someone doesn’t stand up to him. As a hero, I can’t step down from this fight. I want the rest of the world to share the same freedoms and happiness my people have and that bastard is trying to stop that.”

“America your intentions are good, but sometimes you have to consider you actions have consequences that can negatively affect others. I’ll always have your back, but you need to be more careful around Russia. I’m not saying you can’t stand your ground, but don’t be too brash. I’m afraid one of you is going to try to blow the other off the map, which is a lose-lose situation for us all.”
“I understand England, don’t worry so much. Everything will be fine. I’m a hero, and the hero always prevails”.

“You’ve been reading way too many comic books lately…”

“Hey! Superman is the best, and don’t forget Captain America. He’s the epitome of greatness.”

England gave another heavy sigh, “Whatever you say love, go get ready for our date tonight. I don’t want you to be late.”

“I won’t sweetheart, I’ll see you there.”

“See you there, dear”.

“England?”

“Yes, what is it, love?”

“I love you.”

“…I love you to you silly git, go get ready. Goodbye.”

“Bye-bye”

With that England hung up the phone. America just laid there with the receiver lying in his lap. All he could think about at that point was him and England. He loved England to death but it sucked how he had to hide their relationship from everyone. After the war when they decided that they were going to give this whole relationship thing a try, they also agreed to keep it a secret. They didn’t think the world was ready for their new relationship, especially America’s people. The Americans were busy worrying about getting back to work and moving out to the suburbs to start families3. Also, right after the war ended, they found themselves with a new enemy, communists.

There had been talk among the government personnel about combating communism at home. There were still some communist groups left over from the 1930’s, which emerged during the Great Depression era. Now that the country’s economy was back in full swing, the Republicans found these groups to be a threat to the new and improved America.

J. Edgar Hoover said to the United States Congress in five years ago, “The godless, truthless way of life that American Communists would force on America can mean only tyranny and oppression if they succeed. They are against the liberty which is America…”

This talk scared America and it scared him for the future. He just had a bad feeling in his gut about this, but most of the time he dismissed it. America still trusted his people, especially his boss, to do the right thing. He had heard stories three years back about some Wisconsin Senator4 asking the federal government to deport communists and to out “communist front organizations”. Not a lot of attention was drawn to it, but it was alarming to some people.

All these serious thoughts were making America more tired. He finally found the strength to get off the couch and slowly move toward the shower to get ready for tonight’s date. At least there was England to distract him from all this political tension. The Brit always found a way to put a smile on his face during the most stressful of times.

Decided to add this to keep it historically accurate and to keep it from getting confusing.

The FF takes place at the beginning of 1950 on the cusp of McCarthyism and the Red Scare.
1The Marshall Plan that loaned out over $13 billion to help rebuild Europe, should be noted that Soviet Union was offered money but they refused.
2Bikini Island or Bikini Atoll was the location of a series of atomic bomb tests which were used to test the effect of the atomic bomb on naval ships. The testing was called Operation Crossroads. The tests were well documented with reporters and camera men on hand at all times. Also, important officials were all invited to witness them. Some question the purpose of the tests because of how highly publicized they were. Some believe that is was just a way to show off the military power the United States now held.
3Just wanted to note that 1950 was the first year in which more people lived in the suburbs than lived in urban areas. The United States population was expanding and growing fast.
4This Wisconsin Senator is of course Joseph McCarthy. The story mentioned is from a magazine called Town Meeting from 1947 where McCarthy talks about the actions the government should take against communists in the United States.
