Part 8/? anonymous August 3 2011, 23:18:53 UTC
When he gets home, he is almost surprised that Arthur isn’t there. His mother is in the living room, curled up on the couch and snoring gently, so he heads up immediately to his bedroom to prepare for the date (if one can even call it that) with Natalia.

“She’s probably going to expect me to pay for everything,” he mutters with a scowl as he rummages through his wardrobe, throwing clothes he doesn’t want over his shoulder and scattering them across the floor. He find what he’s looking for in due course- a white dress shirt, the most formal thing he owns. “Whatever; I’ll just leave early so she gets lumbered with the bill...”

Once he’s gotten dressed into what can only be described as a makeshift suit, he kills time by playing computer games that don’t really challenge him in the slightest, one eye set to the clock. The last thing he wants to do is turn up late or Natalia might murder him brutally and he’s suspicious that she’s an expert in hiding bodies. Thoroughly bored with the dull shooting games he’s engaged in, he decides to head to Natalia’s house with an hour to spare, intending to spend some time at Matthew’s house before he goes to pick her up.

Alfred tells his mother that he’s leaving for the night just as he walks out the door. She’s still asleep in front of the television and doesn’t reply.

“I’m taking the car, Mom,” he informs her, aware that she’s napping, slamming the door behind him.

The weather is calm with a refreshing breeze rushing through his hair as he winds down the window. He’s slightly unnerved by the darkening sky, even though it’s only five in the afternoon. Putting it down to clouds rolling in he continues his journey- some healthy rainfall is long overdue, after all, and it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world for the town to be cleansed by a downpour.

When he pulls up outside Matthew’s house, the lights are off and the family car is missing from the driveway. With a sigh, he realizes Matthew must be out somewhere with his parents, and drives away. To town, then. Something tells him he should probably turn up at Natalia’s with some sort of gift, for fear she’ll break a few of his limbs if he doesn’t. There’s about fifty dollars in his pocket, as well as the piece of paper containing Natalia’s address.

Checking his watch, he sees that he has forty minutes before he’s meant to collect her. It takes about five to get to where Natalia lives from Main Street, so he’s not worried about rushing. Most of the stores are closed as he parks just before entering Main Street, walking down the pavement with his hands shoved in his pockets. What does that crazy bitch like anyway? He’s stressed, and it’s the first time in his life he’s genuinely considered taking up smoking.

Has Mom woken up by now? Has she even noticed her son’s gone? Whatever.

Reading. Natalia had been in the library that day. There’d been books, plenty of them, in her handbag. She must like reading. Alfred grins, glad that he’s worked out what sort of thing to purchase.

And then his smile fades. The only store that does books that will still be open is the one Arthur works at, and that’s one guy Alfred really doesn’t want to run into. Then again... If Alfred’s lucky, it’ll be Arthur’s day off. He decides to risk it.

A chime above the bookshop door goes off when Alfred opens it, cautiously. A member of staff, alerted that there’s a customer, leaps up from behind one of the shorter bookshelves and waves frantically. “Hello sir; I’m sorry to say we’re closing in a minute, so-“

Then he notices just who it is that’s walked into the shop, and Alfred notices just who it is that’s waving at him.

“Oh,” Arthur says, scratching the back of his head. “Hello, Mr Jones...”

“You don’t have to call me that,” Alfred says, trying to shoot him an enraged glare but probably failing.

“I’m sorry... hello, Alfred,” Arthur grins. “What brings you here? I must say, this is rather unexpected-”

Alfred cuts him off. “Yeah, yeah. Anyway, I need your help.”

At the declaration, Arthur looks legitimately happy.

Oh man, sorry I'm so late getting to this! I didn't even realize you'd updated a!anon.

I absolutely love Arthur's character, he seems like such a nice guy ;u; he seems so happy to help sdjfhsjf cute. Alfred is great too; it's nice to see him not warm up to Arthur instantly--I can't wait for them to get to know each other more.

This really deserves more comments, so I thought I'd mention... you haven't been posting updates on the fills list? You can totally do that, and that way more people will see the new parts of your fic! Looking forward to more, author!anon ♥

God it's nice to see a kind Arthur for once. And quite frankly, it's equally as nice to see a bitter, not so cheerful Alfred.

This is coming along amazingly so far!! Please update soon, anon!! I'll be watching out for the next installment.
