AN: Just a start. I wanted to at let you guys see that I have actually started in on this fill. More will be up soon, I promise! (Also, I wanted to make America a little more like Steve Rogers, the *real* Captain America, so I made him thinner, definitely not as strong, and asthmatic. Hope y'all don't mind. :) )

~

Alfred Franklin Jones always knew that he was destined for something great.

Not that he didn’t like working at his parent’s store on lower Fulton Street in Brooklyn-he was happy to be working there, since nobody else seemed interested in hiring him.

....Alright, so he wasn’t given a job anywhere else since he had bad asthma and was too tall and gangly and too much of a klutz to really be of any help except to the one store where the employers knew how to deal with him, but that was beside the point. The point was that Alfred knew he wouldn’t be staying in Brooklyn for his entire life, and his boundless courage only seemed to feed his dreams of a different life.

However, as it was, Alfred was 22 years old, and he’d never stepped out of Brooklyn by himself. He was always dreaming of far-off lands, always planning a world-wide expedition. He even had a small old cigar box of his father’s stuffed under a loose board in his room, into which he put a little of his pay every two weeks.

So, when President Roosevelt announced that the United States would be joining the war against the Axis Powers, Alfred went immediately to the nearest recruitment building to enlist. And, even when he was turned away he tried again….and again….and again.

Alfred’s persistence even got the better of his best friend, Matthew Williams, who went to enlist in the Canadian military, since he was still (technically) a citizen of the northern country. The two had grown up together, and knew each other so well by now that they could predict where the other was, and what they were doing, and they were usually spot on.

So, when Matthew found his friend sprawled on the ground in an alley behind a movie theatre, he wasn’t all that surprised.

“How did I know that you’d be here?” The Canadian muttered, shaking his head lightly.

Alfred gave him a toothy smile. “Because you’re my best friend and we live together?”

“You know, it’d be nice if you at least had the decency to not get in fights in your condition.” Matthew paused, pursing his lips. “You tried to enlist again, didn’t you?”

Alfred doesn’t answer, slowly standing.

“Alfred, can’t you just give it a rest? You’ve already tried, and they’ve rejected you.”

“I don’t want to just sit here and know that I could be doing something out there. You’re going, Matt; I should be going too.”

The Canadian sighed a little. After a long moment, he said, “Well, come on then. Let’s get you cleaned up. I at least want to spend my last night in the States with someone who looks presentable.”

Alfred grinned, limping along beside Matthew as they headed back to the small apartment the two shared.

Hehe, I'm really glad you're liking this so far~! the beginning seemed so rushed, but w/e

I realized as I was writing that Mattie and Bucky are quite similar, so I'm definitely digging deep into that, and Alfred is too adorable for his own good--seriously. and yes, I took the title from the song by Adele, I thought it would at least make sense when I got farther along with the fill OTL

I think you'll enjoy what I've got planned.....

Y-you want to marry me? Already? :3 OP, you flatter me!

Thankfully, it was hours before Matthew finally brought up Alfred’s latest attempt to enlist. However, the topic only came to light when the American ran off to find another recruiting center.

The duo had decided to spend their last night together exploring the giant fair that Howard Stark, renowned engineer, had created on the outskirts of New York; it reminded Alfred vaguely of his family’s visit to Tomorrowland in Disneyworld (although the trip had ended quite disastrously.). Matthew had looked less than enthused when Stark himself appeared on stage to glorify the convention, but Alfred stared up at him, seemingly hanging off his every word.

“What?” The American asked when his friend gave him a funny look. “I’m a big fan of his!”

Matthew only rolled his eyes at this, shaking his head. “You and your heroes. Honestly, sometimes I can’t understand that about you.”

Alfred looped his arm into Matthew’s grinning. “Come on, don’t tell me that you didn’t like seeing the best engineer in all of North America in person!”

“I didn’t.”

“Oh, now, that’s just un-American!”

“Do I need to remind you that I’m Canadian?”

Alfred sighed, stuffing his hands into his pockets and rolling his eyes. “Yeah, yeah, whatever.”

They walked along in silence for a few moments, taking in the sights around them. Then, after a moment, Alfred turned and made a beeline for a small, squat-looking building on the edge of the fair grounds.

Matthew knew immediately what it was.

“Alfred!” He called, running after his friend. Despite his clumsiness and asthma, Alfred could be fairly fast if he wanted to, and he was already in the middle of filling out an enlistment form by the time Matthew reached him. “For maple’s sake, you really aren’t going to try this again, are you?”

“What does it look like I’m doing?”

“I don’t want you to keep trying to enlist, okay Al? I’d worry too much about you, not to mention that your parents would both probably have heart attacks. What if they actually picked you, huh? What if you were sent over there?”

Alfred looked up at his friend, eyebrows knitted together in determination. “The Axis Powers are nothing but bullies, Mattie, and I’ve been dealing with too many of their type for all my life. Too many people are laying their lives down to stop them; why should I be left out just because I’m not the “perfect” soldier, or anybody else like me for that matter?”

Matthew frowned. “These guys aren’t like the guys who you get into fights with.”

“Oh yeah? Tell me, what’s different?”

“These people have guns, and they won’t hesitate to kill anyone who doesn’t believe in what they believe.”

Alfred frowned even more. “So? All the more reason to try again.”

Matthew sighed. After a moment, he said, “I’m not going to be able to keep you from doing this, am I?”

“Nope.”

The Canadian didn’t say anything for a while. Finally, he muttered, “You better not do anything stupid while I’m gone, alright?”

“I won’t, I won’t.”

“Why do I not believe you?”

Alfred grinned, chuckling lightly. “Don’t win the war for me until I get over there, you hear?”

Matthew rolled his eyes but nodded. “As if one man could win a war this size.”

“I’ll see you at home, then?”

“If I’m not asleep, yes.”

Alfred smiled, nudging Matthew in the elbow. “Go get some sleep, Mattie; you’re gonna need it.”

Matthew saluted him, then smiled, patted his shoulder and turned, walking towards the gates leading out of the exhibition. Alfred took a few moments before returning to the form in front of him, which was nearly completed.

The American was surprised when he was almost immediately taken to a separate room for the physical examination, since all the other times he’d tried to enlist, he’d been in a large room with nearly a hundred other men, all much bulkier and stronger than he was-not to mention that none of them were asthmatic, or were prone to health problems.

The examination went fairly well, in Alfred’s opinion. The doctor was a lot kinder than the others he’d encountered, and the nurse wasn’t nearly as annoying as the last one he’d come across. He thought that he may actually have a shot at finally being enlisted.

This thought was immediately squashed when the doctor left after speaking quietly with one of the military personnel , and left without a word.

Alfred spared a glance at the poster on the wall next to him, which ironically said, “It is illegal to falsify your enlistment forms.”

Well, shit. Was all Alfred could think, since he’d lied and said he was from New Haven, Connecticut, not Brooklyn.

He grew even more jumpy when one of the military personnel stepped inside his examination room, followed by a short, thin man with glasses and graying hair, who didn’t look up from the file folder he was carrying. Alfred swallowed nervously, his mouth uncomfortably dry.

The man with glasses waved the soldier away, and then said in heavily accent English, “So, you vant to go over to Europe and kill some Nazis.”

It wasn’t a question.

“Um….” Alfred muttered, completely confused.

The man looked up at him (finally), a slight mischievous twinkle in his eyes. “I overheard you talking with you und your friend.”

Alfred frowned. “Oh.” He said softly, still not quite understanding what was going on.

The man studied him a moment and then smiled, holding out his hand. “I am Dr. Abraham Erskine. I vork for ze Strategic Scientific Reserve of your government.”

Alfred sighed a little in relief, realizing that he didn’t seem to be in any sort of trouble, and shook the man’s hand. Dr. Erskine smiled a little, going over to the examination table and setting down the file folder.

“Where are you from?” Alfred asked, a little hesitant.

Dr. Erskine looked up momentarily from the file, before saying, “Queens. But, before zat, Germany.” He added, almost as an afterthought. He turned back to the file. “Now, vhere exactly are you from, Mr. Jones? Is it….New Haven? Or Albany?” He looked up again, that twinkle back in his eyes.

Alfred swallowed again, finally saying after a few moments, “Brooklyn.”

Dr. Erskine chuckled. “Zen, ve are practically neighbors.” He closed the file, leaning against the table. “You have taken ze examination five times, yes?”

Alfred nodded. “I’m not in trouble for anything to do with that, am I?”

“Oh, no,” He said, his tone light. “I am only interested in ze fact zat you took it five times.” He paused, studying Alfred again. “Vhy, I thought, vould someone take ze exam over und over so many times?” He leveled a knowing look at Alfred, still smiling lightly.

“I want to be out there.” Alfred said simply. This answer seemed to please Dr. Erskine greatly, as his smile grew wider.

“Zat is vhat I thought.” He replied. “Now, you still haven’t answered my first question: Do you vant to go to Europe and kill Nazis?”

Alfred frowned, studying him. “This is a test, isn’t it?”

“Yes.” The doctor replied, without missing a beat.

“You heard me when I said that the Germans are nothing but a bunch of bullies, right?”

“Yes.”

“Then you know that I don’t like bullies, or even put up with them, whoever they are.”

Dr. Erskine nodded a little, the twinkle still in his eyes. “Ve have so many big men fighting for us; maybe, all ve need is a…what do you say? ‘Little guy’.” He picked up his file folder and turned, beckoning Alfred to follow. “I can give you a chance. But only one.”

Alfred’s eyes went wide. “What?”

They’d reached the front desk, were Dr. Erskine picked up one of the stamps. “You said zat you don’t like bullies. I agree with you about zat, und zat is vhy I am giving you a chance.” He stamped the form Alfred had filled out only a short while earlier, smiled, and said, “Velcome to ze war, soldier.”

As he turned and walked away, Alfred couldn’t help but let the grin grow across his face until it reached from ear to ear.

AN: Sorry about making Dr. Erskine's dialogue nearly impossible to read; I just wanted to emphasize the difference in their speaking patterns. And you guys have no idea how tempted I was to make Germany by Erskine. D:

An update, and so quickly? You're the best, A!Anon! ♥

I'm actually really glad you didn't use Germany for Erskine; I absolutely love Stanley Tucci as an actor, so to have you maintain him as he was in the film is perfect to me. Germany would have been too young and straight-laced, I think. XD

However, I can't wait to see how you incorporate him into the story later!

Gah I have so much love for this story and it's barely begun. I can not wait to see what happens next. *gives you a dozen Gigi's cupcakes*

Nope, I totally didn't just deanon, what are you talking about? XD

Yeah, I needed to post the rest of the first part, since I realized I hadn't done so; sorry!

I love Stanley Tucci too, especially his character in the movie, so I'm trying to keep him intact. the main reason why I didn't make germany be Erskine was because of what happens to him, but now that I thinkk about it, you're completely right

He will be mentioned soon, I promise. So will Prussia~

:3 Oh, man, I'm already loving you and your comments~ I really love comments, especially since I get many more here than I do for wherever else I post fanfiction/fanart. Oh well. :) I'm already working on the next parts, and I know how this will turn out too, and hopefully I'll include at least two of the bonuses. :)

what? what de-anon?

And, also, I'm still fail because I keep noticing all my typos and I'm all FFFFFFFFFF-- I hate typos! D:

I love you and so here are my ovaries to do with them what you will.

Seriously, I am in love with this story! Alfred's desire for heroism shines through alot and Matt is the perfect Bucky. I'm so glad Sebastian Stan (Bucky's actor) is signed on for multiple movies. Avengers is gonna be BOSS. >w

well, that's the first time I've been offered that!

I love how Matt is obviously a great Bucky. It's great that they are so alike, along with Al and Arthur as well. (we'll see him soon, I promise!)

I am super excited for the Avengers movie~!
