thirty six.
It has been more than a week, and Alfred has been treating Arthur as if he doesn't exist. Chemistry lessons in the lab are now silent affairs, with Alfred almost ignoring his presence. Alfred doesn't bother volunteering in Maths class any more, and Arthur cannot bring himself to answer because there's no one to compete with. Their project is now on indefinite hiatus, even with the deadline looming.
They don't talk anymore.
They don't settle into the silence comfortably. It's not like how they used to be together, acting like a pair of lovers slipping into old skin together. There's something charged in the atmosphere in between them, something that feels different, and Arthur has absolutely no idea what to do about it.
Arthur wants to scream at Alfred. Wants to shake him by his shoulders, wants to ask him what on earth is wrong with him because God, if he'd just let him, he would try to explain. He doesn't know how exactly, but at least he'd try.
How did it all begin between the both of them? Arthur doesn't really remember anymore. He supposes that it had been due to a new seating arrangement, when they had been forced to sit in alphabetical order. Perhaps their so-called rivalry had started he had picked on Alfred's flyaway curl that never seemed to behave when Alfred had picked on his ridiculously thick eyebrows. Perhaps so-called dislike of one another had been due to the many disagreements they had come to have after they had been forced to sit together. Alfred had thought of Arthur as cold and reticent before then, and Arthur had thought of Alfred as loud and obnoxious.
It had been as if there had been no common ground between the both of them from day one. Arthur supposes that he had tried to be friends with Alfred, but Alfred had been fiercely competitive, and they had ended up trying to beat each other at every opportunity he had.
Or rather, maybe, Arthur had been the competitive one, not Alfred, what with how he had been determined not to lose to someone who had seemed to do everything but study. After the first test they had taken together, every thing between them became a competition. It had always seemed as if one had been seeking the attention of the other and vice versa, in a strange sort of way.
Or was it? No, Arthur supposes that Alfred wouldn't have needed to seek his attention. After all, who was he? Arthur Kirkland, just another face in the crowd to Mr. Alfred Rather Popular F. Jones. He didn't have a crowd of friends to hang out with. He wasn't anyone special. No, that wasn't it.
With a sickening sensation, Arthur realises that all he had wanted back then was to be noticed. And to be noticed by Alfred, the golden boy, popular with majority of the cohort, had been his solution to that.

Oh my god anon!!! P-poor Arthur... Poor Al! I love this story and I literally squee'd when I saw the update. Also I made a very distressed-sounding noise when I got to the part where Al walks in... I can't wait for the next update! This is stressful, anon, those two boys need to admit they are totally in to each other. Maybe then Arthur will finally stop having such 'inconvenient' dreams, haha.

Fantastic A!A! Fantastic! I was so close to dancing at my desk when I noticed this had been updated. Thanks so much for updating! Even if there is going to be a while until you update again. Thanks for throwing that juicy little bone! I will be looking forward to the next one. Hope your trip overseas turns out alright.
This. Just...This. That scene with Arthur and Alfred's jacket is more than anyone could ask for. Poor guys they need to get together soon or their gonna go nuts. Arthur nearly is already. I loved Arthur's realization there at the end. I just loved everything. I'm looking forward to seeing how so many things turn out!

8D YOU HAVE UPDATED! The anon who first asked if you were going to update litteraly shot out of her seat squealing before remembering no one knows she reads the kink meme and noises like that always bring my brothers in to ask whats up when she saw this on the fills list XD
Oh god.. Poor Arthur. Having Alfred walk in on that. Poor Alfred must be so confused. Can't wait for your next update A!A and im so glad that you are back. :3

I'm a first time reader and I'm really enjoying this. And you are FANTASTIC for that final part and making everything terrible after the jacket incident, because that's what would realistically happen, not some "omg I love you too let's fuck!" kind of reaction. You're great. :)

Damn! I just noticed that there's an update here! shame on me! But I did read it, and in fact at first I thought it's the end lol and felt kinda sad. Because yeah would be sad if it ended up like this. But oh well! I really liked this last chapter. And pooor Arthur ;; *holds him* Don't worry dear, it'll be alright... I hope. And well yes, I hope for a happy ending, will be really glad if they end up together! And can't wait for the next update! please don't drop this story, A!A, I really like it ;;
