“They are beautiful, Mr. Germany, thank you,” Lichtenstein beamed up at the tall man, he cheeks warming in pleasure over the nice gesture. “I must be forgetful, have I missed a holiday?”

“No, um, no,” the man muttered, staring at his feet and twisting his fingers together in agitation. "I was just...remembering past events today. I realized that I...I never really thanked you properly for your help. That time in-in Hamburg.”

Lichtenstein opened her mouth a little in surprise, then set the flowers aside so she could hug the stuttering, blushing blonde. As her arms wrapped around him, she felt him jump and gasp a little, the stutters increasing but no words coming out. How cute.

“You’re very welcome,” she exclaimed softly, a wide smile stretching her lips.

After a few moments in the embrace, she felt his arms awkwardly settle around her. She took pity on the embarrassed nation and released him. She beamed up at him and he stretched his lips in a rather adorable attempt to return the expression, even though anyone could tell he was unsure of himself.

“Would you like to stay for dinner?” she asked, enjoying watching the tall and strong nation fidget and blush like a tongue-tied teenager. “I’m making Hafalaab tonight.”

“I would...enjoy that,” Germany replied, his hands shaking slightly as he clasped them in front of himself.

“Wonderful!” She exclaimed brightly and stepped aside to let the other nation enter her home.

He looked unusually large in the quaint little cottage, but somehow fit perfectly. She took his hand gently in hers to stop the shaking and leaned up on her toes to press a chaste kiss to his cheek, watching in delight as they reddened even further.

“And there is no need to thank me for helping you that day,” she continued, pulling him down the hall and into the kitchen.

He finally seemed to shake off some of his uncertainty and gripped her hand firmly in his own, stopping them just before they entered the kitchen. Lichtenstein turned to look up at him, small smile still in place. For the first time since he had arrived, he looked straight at her without a hint of colour staining his cheeks.

“I wanted to,” he murmured.

It was Lichtenstein’s turn to flush.

Notes:

- Hamburg, Germany: On July 30th 1943, the Allied Forces bombed the city, killing 42, 600 civilians and wounding 37,000. It was called Operation Gomorrah and was one of the largest bombings of the war, almost completely destroying the city.

- Lichtenstein went through many periods of economic instability and hardship after the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire by Napoleon. Before the Napoleonic Wars, Lichtenstein was a province of the Roman Empire, in ancient times known as Raetia.

- Hafalaab is a national dish of Lichtenstein that consists of flour and cornmeal dumplings and either smoked bacon or ham in a broth.

I LOVED IT. They are so cuuuuuuuute!!!!!!!!! Germany's awkwardness at the end was so adorable. I love awkward Germany so much. :D

Just going to nitpick a couple history facts. Germany actually wasn't a state until the late 1800's, when Bismark finally united (most) of the Germanic states. For some reason, he excluded Liechtenstien, which is why she's her own nation today. Liechtenstein, then would be a lot older than Germany, unless you go by the Germany is HRE theory. Otherwise, Germany is a really young country. He wouldn't have even seen the Napolemic Wars that Liechtenstein suffered through. So yeah.

It was soooooooooo cute!! Squeals

Yeah, I was going for the Germany = HRE theory, just because it seemed more canon. Glad you caught that though, always love commentary from other history lovers :D

This was so sweet...It really warmed my heart. Germany is my favorite character, and his combination of strength and awkwardness is one of the things a love the most about him. And of course it's always a treat to see rare pairs in a fill. Thank you, author!anon!
