Sweating on the Top Line [Part 2/?] anonymous May 19 2011, 16:57:30 UTC
As an American, Alfred liked to think he could smell trouble miles away. When they got out of bed that morning, he definitely felt something was wrong, and it had nothing to do with the hangover he had.

The streets were dead. This should have been a sign to turn around, crawl back into bed, and just sleep the day away. But no. Arthur just had to get fresh eggs this morning, because even though they were very expensive, you just couldn't get them on the front.

The baker's shop was closed, meaning Alfred couldn't beg for the sweets he wanted. He pouted inwardly, knowing that the care package from his brother wasn't set to come until the end of the month. No sweets until then. Not even chocolate. How awful.

A few cars had passed them on the road earlier, but they were long gone by the time Alfred felt someone watching them. He didn't know why anyone would be watching them; they were in their civvies, and it wasn't like they were holding hands or anything. There was nothing out of the ordinary about them based on appearances. Still, though, he felt eyes following them as they walked from block to block.

There was a flash of red from the corner of his eye. Alfred turned, only to have Arthur yell behind him. Suddenly, his arms and legs were grabbed and he could no longer move. Just what was going on?

The sound of a man laughing caught his attention. He stood there in a grey military coat with his hands in his pockets before walking toward them. "Good job, men." So he was French. In this situation, he normally would normally thrash around and beat up the thugs, but something stopped him in his tracks.

They were Redcaps.

"Damn Poilu!" Arthur barked, his face red with anger. "Just who the hell do you think you are?"

The man smirked, looking at both of them smugly. "My name is François Bonnefois. The Provost Marshal has called for your execution. I'm here to fulfil his wish.

"Plug 'em."

Alfred struggled, but even with all his might, he couldn't overtake the three men holding him back. Why? Why did this world have to be so cruel? All he wanted to do was wrap his sweet Arthur in his arms and hold him as their last breaths escaped their lips. Not even God was going to pity them this day; they were two men, soldiers in the grandest war in all of time, yet they had forgotten their duty and instead squandered in sin. There was no worse punishment he could think of then to die alone.

He hardly heard the first gunshot with the blood pounding in his ears. He couldn't hear the second.

A/N: No, they aren't dead. I'm keeping with OP's request of no character death. Also, I forgot to mention that I'm using a lot of World War II-era military slang here, and if anyone doesn't understand anything, just ask and I'll be happy to tell you what it means.

Redcaps - Corps of Military Police; Military policeman, said to be the most despised men on the Western Front. Derived from their red service caps.

Very cool start, anon. If you are going to use WWII slang, then maybe you can add a brief "Vocabulary" section at the end of your post. That way anons can check words as they appear and don't have to ask you, which can make people get discouraged.

So the redcaps want to execute them for being gay? I'll admit I'm a little confused here, but at the same time I love the tone you've struck here, getting straight into the rough soldierly atmosphere with Arthur going on about the cigarettes. Keep up the good work, anon!
