The Sexual Miseducation of Gilbert Beilschmidt, 1g/? anonymous April 28 2011, 21:01:33 UTC
"Damn," Prussia exclaims, flicking his cell closed.

He stares at the rows of cheap alcohol decorating the bar room wall for a few minutes, slowly tapping his knuckles against the counter.

While Prussia can't quite put his finger on it, something about what he'd heard on the phone just now was... not right. Spain sounded like he was about to have a friggin' heart attack, and he's one of the most chill guys Prussia knows.

His frowns deepens.

Yeah, there's no mistaking it. Something else is going on here, something Spain isn't telling him ab-- oh.

Oh.

Prussia's eyes widen, the nature of situation at hand suddenly dawning upon him. Of course.

He probably took one too many phone calls from other nations wanting to discuss EU subsidies, Prussia realizes, wincing in sympathy. The poor bastard. Talking about that shit all week would probably drive anyone nuts.

Maybe there were upsides to not being an official nation after all.

Prussia shakes his head, taking another long sip of his beer. If that was the toll getting down to business took these days, it was ordeal he was glad to be spared.

Notes

1. As Prussia became less religious, he kind of replaced praying to God to "talking" to Old Fritz, in a "Are you there, Fritz? It's me, Prussia," sort of way.

2. Prussia is mistaken; Frederick the Great never said anything of the sort. The quote is from Jane Austen.

3. There's a little joke in there for French speakers (A!A is Canadian). Whoever was in the hotel room didn't say "poutine", but "putain": http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=putain

4. Pictures of the swanky hotel where Spain and France are staying: http://www.booking.com/hotel/de/adlon-kempinski-berlin.en.html

5. I don't think Prussia's actually this dim in canon, but you'd have to be really clueless to live for centuries and never "seal the deal", so to speak.

On the other hand he did think Hungary was the ghost of the makowiec he had for lunch, so YMMV.

Getting a hold of him this way is a pain in the ass because he has to give the front desk France's civilian name, which the guy changes about as often as his clothes and Prussia can never fucking remember it as a result. He privately suspects France does it because he's only being on earth vain enough to enjoy posing for passport photos.

I had to stop reading for a minute or so because I was laughing like a complete idiot. This is instantly going to my headcanon folder (together with the armpits thing. Maybe.)

Awww and poor poor little lonely clueless Prussia, who mistakes Jane Austen's quotes for Fridrich's.

This fill is so much win.

Sorry to disappoint everyone, but this will probably be the last part for now. Upon rereading it I find this bit part really overwrought, and I don't like it.

I'm probably going to practice writing some more until I get a better handle on it, at which point this will be continued.

Sorry OP!

What? No, your writing is amazing and I didn't think it was overwrought at all! But if you're really not happy with it, I understand. Hope you become more comfortable with your writing soon so this amazing fic carries on ♥

Thank you so much. At the risk of getting into "cool story bro" territory, I think the problem is that it's impossible to get an objective opinion. People on the meme are really quite nice, so when I read the fic and think, "It reads like the author (me) is trying way too hard", it's difficult for me to gauge whether it's true or not. The people who share that opinion are unlikely to post it for fear of hurting feelings, you know?

Heh, some of us would say. ;D I mean, it's also true that there's no way to know if I'm just saying that, but if someone asks for concrit, I'm blunt.

Either way, do what it takes to be happy with your writing, whether it's more practice, more analysis, or just more talking about it. Writing is no fun when you aren't happy with the result or content that you did your best, so sometimes you've got to choose between adjusting your writing or your mindset to be happy.

If that's what you think, please say so! I mean, I'm aware of other small issues I need to improve on, but that's the big one that makes me want to throw up my hands.

If someone else can it, I'd like to know, because then it will at least be confirmed that I need to go back to the drawing board. :)
