Re: Of Heroes and Wizards [2a/??] anonymous April 9 2011, 06:08:59 UTC
Alfred hated that he had to leave his horse at the bottom of mountain. Though, even if he tried to bring his trusty steed up the mountain, he wouldn’t have gotten too far up. The blond maneuvered over several rocks before reaching a cave. Alfred spent a few moments checking his armor, making sure it was tightly secured before heading in the cave entrance, hand on sword. Just as the king had mentioned, the cave was starting to have the appearance of a shack. There was no telling how long the wizard took to build this, and it was quite large.

“Wherever you are, wizard, you better come out! I’m challenging you to a duel right here, right now!”

The blond looked around warily. He felt the presence of the wizard somewhere within the dim shack. Alfred had only wished that he had more light, because he couldn’t see. As soon as the thought crossed his mind he saw a small spiral of green light that turned into a flame. Alfred almost ran towards the light until he saw it blast directly at him. He didn’t quite have enough time to dodge the attack and ended up taking a direct hit. The hit was enough to send him flying out of the cave and tumbling down the mountain.

He was fortunate to have skidded across the least jagged part of the mountain, or he would have been dead. However, he didn’t exactly escape the mountain slide without injury. The blond weakly clambered to his feet and drew his sword, wary that something was wrong with left arm. Alfred gritted his teeth. “Alright, wizard, where are you? It’s time for you to meet the hero that’s going to save the day!”

“A bit cocky, aren’t you?” rang a voice. Alfred jumped a bit, checking in all directions just so he wouldn’t be surprised by the wizard. In a flash of purple, the wizard appeared before him. “So, you think you can defeat me?” Alfred’s grin beamed. “Of course I will old man! What do you think I am-some kind of wimp or something? Please!”

Arthur’s eyebrow twitched. “Did you just call me old?”

“Oh? You didn’t hear me? Don’t people start to lose hearing when they get old?”

“You bloody twat, you’re going to pay for that!” the enraged wizard summoned his staff and aimed it at Alfred. He said a quick chant and an orange burst of energy was heading for Alfred. The young blond quickly dived out the way and ran for the wizard. With a large, guttural roar, Alfred swung his sword at the assailant. Arthur barely managed to dodge to avoid the direct hit, but still didn’t escape unscathed. The wizard quickly formed a fireball and quickly hit his opponent with it. The force was enough to knock Alfred back, but not too far.

Alfred wished he had a shield right about now. While he was able to brush the fireball off easily, he did feel some of the flames singe his arm. When he thought about it, he wished he had better suited armor because this wizard’s magic was literally seeping through the grooves of his armor. Alfred dashed towards the wizard and easily caught the seemingly older blond in the hand with his sword. The wizard yelled in pain as he swung his staff, hitting Alfred with another burst of magic. Alfred flew back into the dirt and crashed into some rocks near the bottom of the mountain.

The hero was a bit slow to get up. However, the wizard seemed to be bleeding from one hand. From Alfred’s view, it appeared to be of no use to Arthur anymore. Alfred smirked. “It seems like you don’t have much of a use for that arm anymore.” Arthur snarled, “Well then, if you have to point that out, then let me just say that you don’t have much of a use for yours anymore either!”

Arthur was right, there wasn’t too much Alfred could do with his left arm anymore. It hurt him to hold onto his sword, and it didn’t quite help that the sword he was wielding was a two-handed sword. While he could easily hold the sword with one hand because of his slightly stronger than normal strength, it wasn’t exactly easy when he was tired. If Alfred could hold on just a little bit longer, then maybe, just maybe…

“Take this!” Arthur managed to send a bright burst of purple at Alfred. Alfred gave it one last shot and threw his sword at Arthur. Alfred wasn’t sure if he hit the wizard or not, but he had heard a scream as his took a direct hit with the attack. He wasn’t sure if it was his or Arthur’s, but one thing he did know what that his vision was getting slightly fuzzy. He groggily found himself getting off the ground and heading into Arthur’s direction.

He saw that the wizard was down, his staff broken. More than likely Alfred had managed to break the staff and magic backfired, taking out Arthur in the process. Alfred seemed to stare at the downed mage for several moments. When he didn’t appear to be moving, Alfred smiled. “I’m the hero!”

---

As much as Alfred wanted to travel back to the kingdom as fast as he could, he was quite exhausted. The blond carried Arthur into a cave he was intending to spend the night in. Alfred sat the mage against the wall and started a small fire with wood not too far from the cave. Alfred laid on his back near the fire and stared at the ceiling of the cave.

“That was quite the fight there, young lad.”

Alfred quickly jumped up in a sitting position and looked over at the wizard. “You’re not dead?” Arthur shook his head as he moved a little. “No, I’m just barely hanging on, actually. Though, as I was saying, that was actually quite the challenge…you’re the first person to ever challenge me to a duel and win. I’m not sure if I should congratulate you for your bravery or yell at you for your stupidity.”

The younger blond pretended to not hear the latter part of the wizard’s sentence. Arthur slightly adjusted his cape as he looked at Alfred. “I see you didn’t exactly escape the battle in that well of shape either.”

“Well, at least I don’t look dead.”

Arthur chuckled. “Oh, you seem to have quite the tongue there. If I had the strength I’d give you more than a backlashing, but I’ll just settle for now.”

A small moment of silence filled the cave. Arthur spoke up once again, “So, assuming that you’re going to take me back to that twat of a king, I might as well have conversation with you while I’m still here. Since the trip back is going to take much longer because of our injuries, do you think I could at least get your name?”

“Alfred. Alfred F. Jones.”

Very cool, author!anon; you've got me looking forward to finding out Arthur's motives (besides loneliness/boredom/misanthropy) and how "evil" he really is. (I'm not sure if he's going around killing innocent bystanders or if he's just killing anybody who gets in his way, for instance.) Not to mention that Alfred's moral dilemma and the development of their relationship will be interesting; it looks like it's going to be a bumpy ride!

Thanks for the comments, guys! I apologize for being a little slow with the story, normally I do a lot better than this...

The night seemed to have dragged by. Alfred kept falling in and out of sleep, and it didn’t help that his injuries were starting to feel a bit worse. The young blond sat up and looked out the cave. A small amount of luminescent color shown in the sky, so dawn wasn’t too far from approaching. Alfred smiled and decided it was best to gather a few herbs and supplies before heading off again. He headed for the opening of the cave and stopped next to his horse. “Keep a watch on Arthur, pal. I don’t want him trying to escape on me, alright?”

The horse snorted and appeared to nod, so Alfred headed off.

---

Arthur felt something warm on his hand. In fact, it felt like there were hands touching his. He felt one of the hands disappear, then return with something cool on it. Whatever was rubbing against Arthur’s injured hand stung, and the wizard involuntarily hissed at the pain. He had a slight grimace on his face as he opened his eyes. Emerald eyes grew wider as Arthur realized who it was attempting to treat his injuries.

“Alfred?”

The younger blond looked up at the wizard. “Ah, it’s nice to see that you’re finally awake. Did you get a good rest last night?” The wizard scoffed, ignoring the younger blond’s question. “Care to explain why you’re trying to treat my injuries? It’ll only give me a better shot of quickly killing you and escaping.”

“Well, for one, you’ve been doing a lot of bleeding, and I don’t think I want to carry back a rotting body to the king. However, I do have this feeling that you wouldn’t quickly do away with me and escape.” Alfred let go of Arthur’s hand. “Besides, wizards are all that powerful anymore without a staff. I don’t think you could make, or find, a new one fast enough without me noticing. Though, this is just my opinion on things, it’s not like I know what sadistic thoughts run through your head.”

The wizard snarled. “It appears that you have quite the imagination on you, young lad.”

“I’m aware of that, but now we have to head out. We can talk and move at the same time. Plus, knowing that king, he probably thinks I’m dead by now and more men are on the way to take you out. If they find me with you, more than likely they’ll kill us both just so they can take the reward for themselves.” Alfred quickly helped Arthur to his feet and they headed to the stallion standing just outside the cave. Alfred patted his steed on the head. “Time to start the trek back home, buddy, so I hope you have it in you!”

Arthur frowned. “Communicating with horses like that isn’t exactly a sane thing.”

“Well, considering how you make pretty rainbow colors with your hands that seem to hurt, I’d say we fit in about the same category.” Alfred paused for a moment. “Are you going to give me a hard time? If so, I’m either going to have to tie you up and make you walk alongside my horse or knock you out and carry you on my horse.” The mage frowned. “Out of all the villages I destroyed, people I killed and lives I made miserable, you’re still treating me like I’ve done nothing wrong. Care to explain why?”

Alfred stood there for a moment. “You know, for a grouchy old man that slaughters people, you do talk a lot.”

The mage was just about to summon a small burst of magic and hit the hero with it, but Alfred grabbed the mage’s hand. “I wouldn’t advise that. You’re attempting to use your injured hand to hurt me. We’d both end up in some pretty serious condition if you actually fired that attack off.” Arthur growled. The mouth on this boy was really pissing him off. He snatched his hand back. “If you’re going to take me back to the king, then just go ahead and do it already. I’ve never dealt with someone with a mouth like yours, and honestly, it’s starting to bloody annoy me!”

“Touché.”

Shhhh, I like posting two parts at a time, I write short chapters, it deserves it. xD

---

The duo originally intended to take the same path Alfred used when he came through. They originally intended to just walk away from the destruction that lay way in their path, not further investigated. Arthur had that feeling that if they never tried looking at what was the cause of the mass amount of debris, that they wouldn’t be in the situation they’re in now.

The two were much farther from where they originally started, and now people were trying to kill them.

Before the two ended up two days farther from their destination, Alfred had the genius idea of checking around the debris to see what kind of creature might have caused this. A couple of weapon-wielding psychopaths jumped from behind the mess, in hopes of killing Alfred and taking Arthur to the king themselves, attacked Alfred. The attackers only managed to injure Alfred’s left arm even more, and Arthur had to intervene to stop the fight.

While literally jumping on the horse, grabbing Arthur and running away wasn’t really the hero’s main intention, he needed to keep himself alive. He wasn’t really going for the award anymore. He wanted to get to know Arthur, learn why the wizard was causing destruction and making lives miserable. He wanted to see if Arthur would try to kill him again, though he was really hoping it wasn’t going to happen.

Alfred finally stopped his horse by a nearby spring when he felt that they were no longer being chased. He felt Arthur get off the back, but Alfred was highly hesitant with dismounting the horse. His left arm was burning in pain. It was practically the only part of him that had taken an extensive amount of damage. If he kept letting it get beat up even more, he might as well chop the arm off and be on his way as the one-armed hero or something.

The wizard scanned Alfred. “Get off your horse, you git! I can do something about your arm if you’re in a much lower position.”

The younger nation looked at the mage. He wasn’t really sure if what the mage was saying was true, but he wouldn’t mind having a much better arm. Slowly, Alfred dismounted his horse and slowly walked over to Arthur. The wizard folded his arms. “Take off your armor.”

“What?” Alfred’s eyes widened at the request, or demand, rather.

“Take off your armor, you twat! There’s nothing I can do to your arm while it’s behind all that metal,” Arthur said with a frown. Alfred slowly started taking the armor he was wearing off, and was soon done. Alfred’s face tinted slightly. “Do…do I have to take my top off too?”

“Well, if you don’t want me to treat your whole arm, then you don’t have to.”

Alfred slowly took off his shirt. It still looked like it was just fine, despite the amount of wear and tear there was on the left arm. Arthur led Alfred over to the spring and sat him down. As soon as Arthur began treating Alfred’s arm, the young hero had to start the conversation with a question.

“Why do you mercilessly slaughter people and destroy kingdoms?”

Arthur stopped his magic for a moment and glared at Alfred. “That’s really none of your business.” The wizard then went back to concentrating on Alfred’s arm. Alfred, not in the least bit satisfied with the answer, persisted. “Was it out of boredom? What about bloodlust? Are you angry with someone? Do you want friends? What about-“

The wizard immediately shut Alfred’s mouth with some of his magic. Arthur’s frown was much more prominent now. As he went back to work on Alfred’s arm, he spoke, “It’s because I don’t care, you twat! Early in my life, people have always shunned and bullied me for being different. I was frequently attacked and robbed because of it. Eventually, I turned into a mere lost spirit, and because I see everyone as a threat, I feel as though they don’t deserve to exist. Anyone who gets in my way dies, and even bystanders perish if I’m having one of my days…”

Arthur could hear Alfred snickering at the last sentence. The wizard thumped the younger blond on the forehead.

“I’m not exactly an evil wizard; I’m just trying to keep myself alive and in solitude in this world. While I may be a wizard, it doesn’t mean I’m not human. I have feelings, actually, HAD, feelings, and felt a need to express them every once in a while. If people couldn’t defend themselves against me, so be it. If they died, then they died. That couldn’t be helped; they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Arthur stopped his magic again and eliminated the glowing aura on Alfred’s mouth. The hero raised a finger. “So, basically, you’re saying you’re lonely and have self-esteem issues, and instead of committing suicide like some kids in our kingdom do, you go out killing people because they’re probably like the rest of the people that bullied you, right?”

The wizard’s eyebrows furrowed as a blush ran across his face. “That is not what I’m saying, git! I just told you why I did it and you had to go and piece this bloody-” Alfred quieted the older blond with the finger he was just holding up earlier. “It’s fine, Artie!”

“It’s Arthur, twat.”

“…there’s more of a meaning behind what some people say! So just because you told me this story doesn’t mean what you said was a lie!”

Arthur let out a frustrated noise and shoved the younger nation in the spring.

Ah, I love the updates for this ^_^

Just a note. You shouldn't have multiple people speaking in one paragraph. When someone new speaks, give them their own paragraph. It gets confusing with things like this:

Arthur stopped his magic for a moment and glared at Alfred. “That’s really none of your business.” The wizard then went back to concentrating on Alfred’s arm. Alfred, not in the least bit satisfied with the answer, persisted. “Was it out of boredom? What about bloodlust? Are you angry with someone? Do you want friends? What about-“

It's easier to read as:

Arthur stopped his magic for a moment and glared at Alfred. “That’s really none of your business.” The wizard then went back to concentrating on Alfred’s arm.

Alfred, not in the least bit satisfied with the answer, persisted. “Was it out of boredom? What about bloodlust? Are you angry with someone? Do you want friends? What about-“

The same usually goes with actions. New action, new paragraph. Just a note <3
