Can't See the Stars Anymore [1/?] anonymous March 25 2011, 04:45:00 UTC
Can’t See the Stars Anymore

America wasn’t sure what had made him follow that little white bunny. True, he’d been fond of them ever since he was a child and England had complained about him sneaking them into the house, but it didn’t explain why he would start running after it.

He’d stumbled after it through the forest at a mad pace. It was almost as if his limbs had a mind of their own because he couldn’t stop. He was chasing a small white bunny like a madman for no apparent reason. He partly wondered if he’d gone insane without noticing it, but he soon lost that train of thought as he saw the bunny hurry down into a hole in the ground.

‘This must be the end of the chase,’ he thought, the feeling of relief light as a feather in his chest. His body slowed down and he stopped running, his breath coming out in near desperate pants from the wild chase. However, just as he was about to turn around and move away, a foreign feeling clamped down on his body.

He gasped in surprise and tried to fight it, but the feeling of something gripping him, covering him, boring into his very bones was overwhelming. Once more his body moved outside his conscious thought, against his will, and he found himself crawling after the bunny through the hole in the ground. How he could fit through it, he had no idea.

He fell after that. He could see nothing but darkness; a pitch black space was what he fell through. Not very peculiar, he thought, he was underground after all.

But he found his own calm in the situation of falling through complete darkness quite disquieting.

When America regained consciousness, he found himself staring at a thick mass of oddly shaped leaves. He sat up and shook his head and waited for his slightly fuzzy vision to clear.

He found himself in a forest completely different from the one he’d chased that white bunny through. That one had been a normal North American forest. This one, however, was not.

The leaves on the trees were shaped like spades, as in the card suit. There were huge red mushrooms with white dots on them pretty much everywhere and some weird bush with red flowers shaped like birds. He blinked.

“So… I guess I’m in Wonderland,” he muttered and stood up. As he brushed the dust off of his clothes, he concluded from the light trying to penetrate the lush trees that it was probably midday.

He looked around once more and concluded that he was, luckily, on a small path. Waking up in a weird forest and with no path would have been decidedly freaky. He heaved a sigh before he started walking forwards.

Suddenly he caught sight of the white bunny in the distance. How he knew it was the same one, he didn't know, he just knew that it was. That it had to be. He ran after it and the chase started anew at the same mad pace it had left off.

As he chased after the bunny, America couldn't help but wonder if this was all just one very strange dream, the product of having eaten one too many hamburgers before bed. He pinched his arm even as he ran, hoping it would reveal this weird dream for what it was, but the dull pain in his arm dashed those hopes. This was real.

He wasn't sure for how long he'd been running when the bunny disappeared again, but he found himself at the very edge of the strange forest. From the standing of the sun, America guessed that it was around 2 pm.

He looked around to see many green hills and lots of flowers. Far in the distance he could see another forest, or maybe it was the same one and this all one huge clearing. He didn't know.

He started walking forward, towards the other forest. Something told him that the bunny wanted him to go that way. He wasn't sure why he followed what the bunny wanted, but the thought of turning back made him feel ill. He didn't know why, and it was a rather unsettling thought.

He briefly wondered if England had cursed him, but he shook the thought away. Sure, England hated his guts, but magic wasn't real so it couldn't be that. But a familiar thought stung in his chest. England hated him. He closed his eyes and shook his head again before continuing to move forward.

"The king has returned! The queen's broken heart will mend and the stars will shine again. All hail for the king has returned!"

America blinked at the sudden voices that sang in chorus and looked around. He hadn't seen anyone.

A group of forest animals were nearby. A fox, a hare, a few birds and a dog. America blinked again. They were wearing human clothes, and they were speaking. Clearly, America had gone crazy.

"King Alfred of Spades!" the hare said and bowed to America. "We are honored to have you in our presence, but you must return to the castle now! The queen awaits!" she continued and looked at America with eyes that said that she wanted to ask him where he'd been. Kinda creepy coming from a hare.

"Uh... King Alfred?" America asked, slightly dumbfounded. Yeah, Alfred was the name he used when he had to pretend to be human, but Alfred wasn’t a king and neither was America. “You must have the wrong person, I…” He trailed off at the weird looks he got from the animals. What the hell had he been drinking or eating last night to make this hallucination happen?

“King Alfred, we are your loyal subjects. We will recognize you despite your odd choice of apparel and the glasses on your nose.” It was the fox that spoke this time. “Perhaps you have a secret plan for the future defeat of the Kingdom of Clubs, but you really must return to the castle. The queen…” The fox stopped speaking, his expression pained. America winced slightly. So the Kingdom of Spades was at war with the Kingdom of Clubs, but the King of Spades was missing and these forest animals thought America looked just like him? And they wanted him to go back to the castle and… what? Cheer the queen up?

“Uh…” He tried to turn them down, he wasn’t the king; what could he do for the queen? But that invisible force gripped his jaw and he felt himself speak without his permission. “Very well, take me to the castle then.” When the force disappeared, Alfred shuddered as the forest animals cheered and started showing him the way to the Castle of Spades.

America gaped a bit as he took in the stunning building in front of him. Several towers in blindingly white stone strained towards the sky, and there was a big dark gate that could be lowered over a wide moat. The moat was filled with dark water that surrounded the castle while several human-looking guards looking down from atop the sturdy-looking outer walls of the castle. It was beautiful, but undoubtedly built for war. It looked like one of those fairy tale castles.

The theme of spades was obvious enough; the entire white castle had them pretty much all over. There was also a huge spade on the closed gate. If someone didn’t understand that this was the Castle of Spades, they must be pretty stupid.

He’d always been a bit fascinated with royalty and castles and stuff. He had never had a monarchy of his own so he didn’t have the feel for it that England had.

When they’d finally arrived at the castle, that foreign force that somehow seemed to hold such power over him, finally let go again. It had forced him forward through the forest and made him follow the animals and somehow, it had told him that he was needed here; that he should be here and that this was the right way to go. America didn’t understand it at all.

“We’ve arrived, my king,” the hare said solemnly. Her wide eyes gazed at the castle, and if America was completely honest with himself, he’d say that there was a sad expression on her face. But she was a hare. She couldn’t have facial expressions, could she?

“Welcome back to the Castle of Spades.”

And here's the first two parts of this fill. Yes, I am the potential authornon from earlier.

I hope you'll like it, OP~ <3

The title comes from the song "Bring on the Wonder" by Susan Enan. You can listen to it here: http://www.myspace.com/susanenan/music/songs/bring-on-the-wonder-acoustic-mix-26247215

Awwwww.

This has the potential to be fun and heartbreaking both. I got kind of teary when America had the "England hates me" thought, because he's so matter-of-fact about it and yet it still makes him sad.

More, please, o great A!Anon?
