Antonio frowned. He thought he’d been doing so well, reading the signs so right. Maybe Lovino wasn’t interested? “Tomorrow night would be okay too. But not the night after the night after that because I have this thing I have to go to,” Francis got really upset whenever anyone missed his pool parties, “but every, or-but any other night this week I’d really like to take you out to dinner.”
The connection between Lovino’s brain and the rest of his body came back online once Gilbert mentioned that he would be doing the taking (and the paying). Sure Lovino had said no on instinct, because he wasn’t easy and he didn’t know anything about Gilbert other than his name and that he was weird as fuck. But.
Maybe it had been long enough.
Lovino didn’t need high standards for a fling, and if Gilbert turned out to be better than a fling then Lovino could claim that he’d known that all along. And maybe he couldn’t stop looking at the way Gilbert was looking at him…
“Saturday. I’m,” Lovino gulped. Antonio watched his Adam’s apple bob, “I’m free on Saturday.”
“Me too!”
“Great.”
“Yeah.”
They stood. Lovino blinked. “So are you going to buy anything or not?”…Fuck his fucking mouth.
Gilbert’s mouth opened and shut. “I’ll take these,” he motioned with his head to the books Lovino had placed in his arms during their tour of the store and was he really going to buy all of those at once? “And, here, let me give you something.”
Something didn’t turn out to be a kiss, like Lovino had secretly been hoping (but not enough to close his eyes or lean in, no, not like that, he hadn’t). Instead it turned out to be a page ripped out of a familiar notebook: a name and a phone number.
“Call me whenever you want to! And remember to call me Toni, because everyone does and you should.” Toni smiled.
Yeah, Toni had to be a model. He was just the right combination of crazy and handsome and rich (twenty-six books all at once!). Lovino had really lucked out, not that Toni was out of his league, because when it came to leagues the booksellers were on top and-
“I’ll pick you up on Saturday!”
And Lovino was looking forward to it.
What do you mean it’s not February anymore?
I had about 20 chapters planned of this, but I might cut out a few storylines in order to get this thing done within a more reasonableish amount of time. This story will have a sad ending, but a brighter epilogue.
My notes for this chapter from months ago included the phrase “romano gets his panties in a twist.” I hope I have achieved that. Everything else is just a bonus.
Two things I just remembered about the last update, before I forget: (1) Claudine Grimaldi was the Lady of Monaco from 1457-1458. I don’t remember what the name they used in the Princess Diaries is. If it’s the same then they’re probably referencing the same house. (2) Is the horse’s name weird in an acceptable way, or just weird in a weird way?

Romano works surprisingly well as a bookworm, who would've thought. And omg, is the cat thing hinting at what I think it's hinting at because I am so happy.
Sad ending, but brighter epilogue? Hmmm. I think I can guess how things could go downhill, but we'll see. I hope.
