Alfred took another glance around the lobby of the convention center and sighed. Man, Arthur wasn’t anywhere, was he? It was a world conference, hidden at the back of the center, so that meant a lot of the nations were wandering around, but it was usually pretty easy to find England. Shoving his hands in his pockets, Alfred strolled out of the lobby. Maybe England was already back from his break and was hiding in the conference room?
He thought nothing of heading there or of opening the door. It took a few seconds for the sight to register, but once it did, Alfred blurted out, “WHAT THE HELL?” France was sitting in one of the chairs, mouth kiss-swollen, hands shoved in unmentionable places. This, this was not the issue. The issue was the person currently straddling France, hands curled in France’s blonde hair. It…it was Canada.
Matt flushed pink and moved from Francis’s lap, straightening his skewed tie. “Hi, Alfred,” he said quietly.
Alfred gaped, gaze going back and forth. “Canada, you…and FRANCE?” But before Matt could even think of saying anything, Alfred narrowed his eyes at France and lunged. “You corrupted my brother!”
In the doorway the gathering nations started taking bets. (Spain was pulling for France. Japan, China, and, surprisingly, Austria were quietly rooting for America. Italy was cheering for Germany, who, next to him, was blushing the slightest bit while trying to quiet him.)
Alfred was just able to get his hands wrapped around the skinny frog’s throat when a hand grabbed the back of his neck and pulled him off. He was expecting maybe England (though why would Arthur stop him when he always wanted to punch France in the balls anyway?), but he met the angry blue gaze of his brother.
Just like earlier, Matt’s voice was quiet. This time, however, there was steel in it. “Leave him alone.”
England (who had put twenty on America) squeezed through the throng and eyed the captured Alfred. “As much as I’d like to see you punch France’s face in America, we do have a meeting to get to.” His smirk touched just this side of you’re an idiot. “Anyway, didn’t you know? France and Canada have been together for…” His thick brows furrowed as he thought.
“Years,” supplied France with a small, completely besotted smile. Aggressive-hockey!mode gone, Canada smiled back, letting go of his brother. Alfred stood there, still gaping, as the nations started filling the room, milling around the small group.
Alfred looked as if he had worked through a complex equation and was still coming up with the wrong answer. (Two plus two equals…fish?) “But…Matt…France?” he forced out.
Matt just looked at him. “Yes, and?” He ducked his head, hair sliding forward to hide his eyes, his flushed cheeks, his smile. “He makes me happy,” he defended quietly.
Alfred looked over doubtfully at France. If England’s clenched jaw and twitching fingers were to go by, France was goading Arthur about something or other. “I suppose that’s okay…” Eyes narrowing behind Texas, Alfred stomped over to France. With a sudden big bright smile, Alfred pleasantly told France, “You hurt Mattie, I hurt you. Got me?”
France looked past Alfred’s shoulder to Canada. “Of course,” he agreed solemnly.
With that the nations all started sitting, readying for the continuation of the conference. England was just about to start when he noticed that Alfred was still standing, looking as if he had been combing through that complex equation and was still coming up with an answer that was just a little off. (Two plus two equals…banana?)
“America?” England prompted.
“Wait a second…” An outraged epiphany lit up Alfred’s face. “Mattie’s been getting LAID?”
As America stalked forward, ignoring England and Canada’s glares and France’s soothing words, the surrounding nations started taking bets once more.

It's not supposed to be an indication "HiImDumb!America," but an indication of how baffling he finds the situation. And, it might be helpful if you could point out the other "lazy characterization[s]."

Agreeing with other anon. He's definitely not stupid in this situation, merely surprised. The "two plus two equals.... banana?" instances were examples to demonstrate how he felt all logic had gone out the window. There is no other mention of America being anything other than of average intelligence, albeit a little unobservant, but that's part of his character.

This was a cute little drabble, anon! I liked all the little details and looks Canada and France shared, as well as America's complete bewilderment (and everyone taking bets, ha!). Lovely work~!

very cute fill author!anon! As an older sibling, I can vouch for America's reaction - it's mind-breaking baffling and disturbing to find out you «innocent» younger sibling is not only dating but getting laid.
