I am so ridiculously happy that you haven't abandoned this, you have no idea. ♥
There's something really.. idk the word, but almost circular, in how both France & Prussia are drinking to avoid thinking too hard about all of this. |D And absolutely seconding the above anon - it's good to see what the governments & houses think of their Nations' partners, that there's more going on than just two nations in isolation. I really want to know what the provinces, especially Quebec, will feel about France being incorporated into Canada's relationship. ^^
Oh! And I wanted to point out two lines: "He'd vowed not only his body and sword arm to Matthew's care, but also his very soul for all eternity." I really liked that you included the second part - Gilbert's violence is a big part of him in this story, for better and for worse, and it emphasizes that Gilbert really is giving all of himself to Matthew. "His first clear memory post D-Day was of his Matthieu and of Arthur." Lovely subtle reminder that Francis has feelings about Matthieu too, that that Matthew's love isn't unrequited and the triad won't come out of nowhere.

Yay! Glad to hear you like those two lines. Those were worrisome and almost got cut.
