Thicker Than Water (1b/2) anonymous January 14 2011, 01:27:16 UTC
“You have to take a bath, Belarus,” she chided gently.

“Don't wanna!” Belarus shrieked before letting go of her blankets long enough to pick up a piece of kindling and throw it at her older sister. Ukraine, well-used to this, ducked and it flew harmlessly over her head. She reached out and grasped Belarus firmly around the middle before she could pick up another weapon. Immediately, the screaming started. Belarus howled and twisted in Ukraine's arms, kicking her little feet wildly and flailing her fists.

“Don't wanna take a bath! Don't wanna, don't wanna, DON'T WANNA!” she shouted over and over as her sister dragged her over to the pot of water. Russia backed away, looking terrified as Ukraine managed to slip off Belarus' shift amidst all of her struggles.

“Russia took his bath, don't you want to take a nice bath like brother?” Ukraine asked desperately, trying to wrangle the rest of Belarus' clothes off. The mention of her beloved older brother was enough to make Belarus pause. Ukraine quickly slipped the rest of her clothes off while she was distracted and picked up the rag sitting in the pot. As soon as the wet cloth touched Belarus' skin, the crying and struggling started up all over again.

Ukraine was heavily tempted to just let her go without a bath, but she couldn't let her little sister run around filthy. So even though she would have liked nothing better than to let Belarus run away, she wrapped one arm around Belarus' waist and used her other hand to wipe her down. Halfway through the bath, Belarus finally lost her energy and slumped over onto Ukraine's shoulder, still crying loudly. All of the noise was starting to give Ukraine a headache.

Finally, she had finished bathing Belarus who squirmed out of her grasp and ran across the shack over to the fire, still naked. But Ukraine was too tired to try to catch her and force her clothes back on. Belarus would get cold quickly and then it would be much easier to redress her. With both of her siblings clean, Ukraine finally had the chance to take her own bath. The water was cold by now, but she was used to that.

After her bath, Ukraine rummaged through the small sack of food they had left. There wasn't much, she realized in despair, and spring was far away. They still had bread and oatmeal for gruel, and a handful of vegetables. Ukraine wasn't sure when they'd get a chance to get more food. Until then, she would have to make due with what they had.

She mentally tried to divide the bread - if they left the shack today, they could probably stumble on a village in a week, maybe a little more. They would have to beg for food, and she would have to make sure nobody took Russia and Belarus away from her, but there was nothing else they could do. Resigned, Ukraine broke off a few chunks of the bread and took it over to where Belarus (who was still naked) was clinging to Russia, who was checking if his clothes were dry.

The two younger siblings accepted their bread gratefully and quickly stuffed it down their throats. Ukraine set hers aside, choosing to first dress Belarus while she was distracted by the food. By the time she started eating, Russia and Belarus had already finished. She was only a few bites in when she realized that her brother and sister were staring at her bread, hunger still clear in their eyes. Her heart ached thinking about her poor siblings going hungry and even as her own stomach growled uncomfortably, she handed her remaining bread over to them. The few extra bites were gobbled down quickly.

It only took a few minutes for Ukraine to gather their belongings. There was only the pot, their blankets, and the sack of food. Russia, who was already starting to grow taller than Ukraine, could easily carry the pot and the food, and Ukraine would carry the blankets and eventually Belarus when she grew too tired to walk. After putting out the fire, the siblings left the shelter of the shack and trudged out to take their chances in the cold.

The next part has nothing really to do with this first half. Hopefully, it will be posted soon.

Nonono, don't give them your share of the food, Ukraine! DD: You're the person who takes care of them, you won't do them a favour by passing out from hunger. *too upset*

Bawww this story is too saaaad. >___> (btw, I know what it feels like to wake up when the fire's gone out. It sucks so hard.)

Why are they so poor? Kievan Rus was rich, and Ukraine too couldn't become a beggar, if she was not to quarrel with Russia.

Because it makes for a better story. XD In all seriousness though, I was just going off of the part in Hetalia where Ukraine first gave Russia his scarf and they looked poor then, or at least they did to me.
