At Least We're in This Together (5a/?) anonymous January 3 2011, 04:32:29 UTC

It was almost closing time, thank god, or else Arthur would have taken up smoking three times over despite having quit two years ago. Stupid him, thinking that working at the library would be like holing up in the corner with a volume of Bryant, or Austen all day.

Instead, it was kicking out punk teenagers for trying to skateboard in the lobby, scraping gum off of the underside of shelves, and listening to an old lady ramble on for fifteen minutes about how she lost her library card and didn’t return a book for seven years, but that shouldn’t mean that she has to pay any fees.

Arthur looked at his watch longingly, willing it to move faster dammit. His favorite program would be in in half an hour, and if he didn’t hurry home, his bastard brothers would crowd the telly and use it to watch MTV, or whatever those young people watched these days.

Across the room, he saw trouble. Trouble in the form of two toddlers currently making a right mess of the children’s area. “Stop!” He began striding forward, intending to pull the little demons away from the books before they could continue to use them as dangerous projectiles.

“Romana … Feliciano …” A man, Arthur assumed was their father, was already desperately trying to coax them away. He was having little success.

With a hand practiced at dealing with his brothers from infancy, Arthur picked up the two squealing children, yanked the books from their hands and deposited them, none too gently, into their father’s arms. “Kindly restrain your children in the future, sir.” Arthur smiled, brittle.

The man had his arms full with juggling the two now-weeping children, but his gaze when it met Arthur’s wasn’t thankful, or abashed. Rather, it was fuming. “What ... gives you the right to touch my babies like that?" He raised himself up to his full, rather impressive height and glared down at Arthur, his expression snapping with anger. "Are all librarians trained like you? To rip books away from small children?”

Arthur chuckled deep in this throat, because he hated children and never backed down from a fight. This guy was nothing compared to his brothers. “And you would like to pay for the damages, I presume? These books …” Arthur snarled politely, picking up a dog-eared copy of Pat the Bunny. “Are library bound hardcover. Some aren’t even published anymore. This damage could run you sixty-seventy dollars.”

The man paled under his tan. “Still, you have no right to-“

Suddenly, his cellphone began ringing, a cheerful latin beat. Just to be snarky, Arthur pointed to a sign on the wall that said, “Please Silence Your Cellphones!” with a picture of a shushing bear. The father ignored this deliberately, trying to free a hand to answer his phone. Unfortunately, neither of his children were willing to be put down, the one with the pigtails screaming when the man so much as made a move to leave her, and the other wailing pitifully, steadily.

Arthur smirked, watching this fiasco for half a minute because he felt not-so-secretly sadistic today. But then, gentleman like he was, he opened his hands for a child. The father seemed to hesitate for a moment, but eventually he gave Arthur the wailing kid, scrambling quickly to put his cell to his ear.

“S-scary man!” The child in Arthur’s arms looked up with wide brown eyes and trembled.

“Why you brat.” Arthur growled.

The kid just continued whimpering, great droplets of tears rolling down chubby cheeks, such a picture of pathetic helplessness that Arthur simply could not bully the child anymore.

“There, there.” He muttered awkwardly, patting the small thing on the head. The copper-headed child stopped crying, but it continued to sniffle and tremble, looking all the world like a rabbit within the grips of a wolf, just anticipating being ripped to shreds.

“...Lilli! Oh, yes, I’ve been trying to catch for hours … no, lo siento, Roderica didn’t tell me you had school …” The man seemed completely wrapped up in his conversation, not even reacting when the pigtailed girl in his arms began screaming in his ear, grabbing handfuls of his hair and smacking him about the head.

Arthur was glad that he was holding the child he was. And he was starting to regret offering to be a Good Samaritan. Dammit, he was going to miss his program, wasn’t he?

“Mr. Kirkland?” A tugging at his sleeve. Arthur looked up to find a blonde boy staring at him, face buried in a stuffed bear.

“Oh, it’s you.” This one came by almost every day, after the elementary school across the street let out. Arthur hadn’t asked, but he assumed that the boy had some kind of family issue. Arthur was certainly not a stranger to family issue, which is probably why he had a bit more tolerance for this kid than he had for most others. “What’s your name again?”

“Matthew.” The boy answered with a sigh, as if accustomed to this question. “And … would you read me this book, Mr. Kirkland?”

The book he held out had a woman with fairy wings on the cover, entwined amorously with a donkey-headed male. A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream.

“Bloody damn, boy, can’t you read something your own age once in a while?” Arthur jerked his head. “Like Pat the Bunny over there?” but secretly, he was pleased. The kid had good taste.

Matthew looked a bit scandalized at Arthur’s use of foul language, so the librarian just stood, glanced once over at the father still on the phone, and nodded slowly. “Hey … Matthew, hold him for me.” Arthur shoved the kid at the Matthew, and it seemed to be a good decision, because the moment the he was out of Arthur’s arms, the whimpering and crying stopped instantly. In fact, he b started smiling up at Matthew, radiantly.

Matthew smiled back, a little.

Untouched by the heartwarming scene, Arthur walked up to the man on the phone. “Do you think you will you be long?”

“You have the number of the daycare? … si, I can hold.” The man turned away, sighing through the apologetic smile on his face. “I’m … sorry.”

“Right. Well, I’m reading a book, if you just want to leave your kids here for a minute.” Arthur had already given up on his program.

The man hesitated, looking at Arthur. Then, “Please. Thank you.” He smiled. “My name is Antonio, these are Romana and Feliciano.” He gestured to his children with his head. Then, gingerly, he held out Romana.

Perhaps she had grown tired of being ignored or she was just jealous of her brother snuggling with Matthew, but Romana went into Arthur’s arms without a fuss, sucking sulkily at her knuckle.

When Arthur set her down next to Matthew, she immediately crawled towards him and shoved her brother off of the older boy’s lap. There was a tussle, a bit of wailing, but eventually, Matthew seemed to arrange some sort of compromise, where Feliciano sat on his lap and Romana leaned against his body, both holding one of his hands.

Frankly, Arthur was impressed. The kid was good.

Antonio drifted around a bit until he saw that everything seemed to be going smoothly, then wandered away to take his call.

Opening the book, Arthur began to read, and gradually, the children fussed less and less until they were perfectly still, watching him perform the story with looks of wonder. He had the text half-way memorized - it had been one of his favorite books, after all. The lines, he realized, were probably too complicated for kids to understand, so he told the story half through his own narration, and half through an abridged version of Shakespeare's words.

Arthur was so absorbed in the world of his own making, that he didn't realize that his expression had grown softer, sweeter, or that his earlier frustration was fairly melting away.

“Sorry, I…” Antonio’s excuses died on his lips as he stepped back into the room. The grumpy librarian, whom he had been so hesitant about leaving his children with, seemed like a completely different person now.

“What is Thisbe? A wandering knight?” Arthur simpered, then answered himself, “Why, she is Pyramus’ love!” The children giggled, more at his performance than at the words themselves. They had scooted as close as they could to Arthur’s chair, sitting practically at his feet, and completely enthralled in the story that they didn’t make a noise. Romana was not bullying her brother, Feliciano was not crying, and that was a miracle, as far as Antonio was concerned.

“And that’s the end of Act 1.” Arthur closed the book, glancing at the clock. “And ten minutes after we were supposed to be closed.”

Antonio moved forward to take his children, feeling like he should pay the man, or something. “Mi dios,” He practically wept when they came, quiet and docile, into his arms. “You are amazing … ah …”

“Arthur Kirkland,” the blonde man replied, just a bit red. He turned to Matthew. “Do you want to check out this book? You could have someone at home read it to you.”

Matthew shook his head sadly. “Papa doesn’t have the time … can we c-continue tomorrow?”

“We may,” Arthur replied with a shrug. “There is usually no one else at closing.”

Matthew’s face brightened, and Antonio imagined that his did as well. “Ah, could I bring Romana and Feliciano by for that? They seemed to really enjoy your storytelling.”

“Yeah.” Romana agreed sleepily.

“It’s a public library.” Arthur smiled. “I can’t very well stop you, now, can I?”

Yay :D Hope you liked these part(s) as well. Now that the characters are down, I'm open for pairing suggestions ... I'm thinking PruHun, but for the others ... FrUk, Spain/UK, France/US, Spain/fem!Austria ... ? Oooh, also, China or fem!China (s/he will be in charge of the daycare)

Again: Jeanne ;_;

My favourite part of this update must have been Arthur's storytelling. ♥

I do like how the whole story's going so far, and I like what you did with Belgium.

You've set up a lot of pairing possibilities, you shipteasing author!anon. From what you've mentioned I'm most keen on PrusHun, Spain/fem!Austria and FrUK, but then again, you're the one writing it.

-smiles- Only one option for Prussia?

Well, out of the ones you've listed... I do like FrUK. Or maybe the Armada Ship. Ahh... so many choices~

Hmm, I don't mind either way. China's really good at taking care of kids, male or female.

Oh, and I really love the way you characterized Jeanne and Belgium. :D

I am so ~*EXCITED*~ for the next parts! What you have so far is fantastic, and JEANNE MY HEART. I find it thrilling and adorable that Matthew would discover love first though, I mean, considering who his father is. Oh when they finally make up.

Personally, I am partial to Spain/fem!Austria, if only because she's such a rigid character and it's rather charming to see a character like that more or less wrapped around the finger of an oversized puppy. Also, call me romantic, but patching up a divorce and getting back together is kind of sweet. Especially since the kids love mommy. ♥

SpainxUK for the pairing suggestion! Because really, it's so rare to see that without the hatesex or the outright rape. It's the possibility of this pairing in your oh so awesome fill that made me write out this comment in the first place. XD; And just imagine Arthur the kid hater ending up with twins XDD LOL

But really. Good job, Anon! I love how you've made the characters human and the changes you made seem to fit so seamlessly in the story, as far as I can tell. I especially love the Italy twins. XD They just steal the show for me every time. Poor Feli! It's not your fault your big sister needs more love!

I honestly don't care about pairings as long as you keep on writing.

The first thought I thought of was Hungary/Austria - Roderica seems kind of divorced from her own feelings too. So discovering that she likes girls kind of would be fun. Or Roderica/Vash or ..

You -are- good at teasing.

But: Prussia/Hungary works so well as friendship I would be sad to see it developed in to long time sex.

My favorite were the Arthur - Mathew scenes and I don't like the FranceEngland possibility, so looking forward to what you decide. :)

Ah, this fill is adorable. <3 And that Matthew. <3333 *o* Dammit, so cute. I can just picture him holding his bear all the time and hiding behind it and sdjhsf. <333

And for the pairings.. I think I'll vote for uh... I'm kind of stuck between FrUK and Framerica because like... I'm a FrUK shipper. But.. Matthew really likes Alfred so.. it could lead to some cute shit, you know what I'm saying?
Besides, Matthew's already trying not to cause Francis anymore troubles, so.. if he'll start dating Arthur Matthew'll get even more quiet around him because, well, they'll fight most of the time, right?

But then again.. I totally love angst. And FrUK could lead to lots of fcuking angst. So.. I'ma go with FrUK.

And how about Spain/US? Could be cute. + Bonus points for rare pairings. amirite?

Or just go with Framerica, Spain/US.

Also, fcuk yeah. PruHun. <3

So cute! You're bringing in characterization well, at its own pace, detailed and all. I love it. Gilbert endeared himself to me here! But for some reason, I don't really see the PruHun angle, it feels like it could have happened in the past but now won't, and they're just friends...odd, since I lvoe the pairing...

Francis' story broke my heart badly. His relationship with Bel lifted my heart a bit! I think France/US would be awesome; he needs someone strong and healthy this time around, someone full of life and energy who can help him reconect with his son. Poor Matt will be able to stand the heartbreakXD

Antonio/Arthur, Antonio/Arthur, ANTONIO/ARTHUR PLEASE!!! <3
You made it so adorable and obvious, and with so much potential...I can't wait to meet his siblings did I catch that he's the eldest in this AU?

and maybe Bel/bitchy model fem!China? hooray for crackpirings! :D

Okay, this is going to be just a comment-while-reading for the last two chapters, bear with me:

xD I love Gilbert googling how to change diapers... Okay, that's probably what I would have done too.

I love the way you show their relationship and the load between them.

D'awww, poor Antonio and the kids... but I do understand Roderic..a, too. And she's perfectly incharacter. xD; So is Vash. I love those two, so much.

Oh my god, Alfred is the coolest teacher ever! xD He's perfect, seriously. Exactly how he should be. So in-tune with the kids and just as excited about the stuff he's teaching them as they are.

Lol, oh Francis. He would get that reaction out of people, wouldn't he. Bel is awesome. x) She's Belgium, right? Also love Francis sneak-insulting the other ladies and them not getting it. And I love Bel and Francis being buddies.

... Oh Francis. DD: *heartbreak*

... And then Bel totally breaks my sad mood. Damn she's awesome. xD

Omg Arthur as a grumpy librarian. :DDDD And awww, Spain getting all angry at him for being mean to his kids. <3

Arthur hating children? Yeeeah, sure, whatever you say, Art.

... Damn the kids are so cute... Feli and Matt and even Roma. xD Or especially Roma, in a way. Adorable grumpy little girl. <3

AWWWWWW. Arthur reading the kids<3<3<3 asjkljghfgjh<3!!!

FrUK would be awesome, but then again FrUK is always awesome for me. ;;; At least I wanna see Arthur berate Francis for neglecting Matt. xD The other pairings sound nice too, though, so I don't really mind either way. It might even be fun to try FrUS and SpUK for a change (... lol yeah, I just made that pairing name up. Don't kill me please xD). And fem!China! Do want!
