He had told Greece that he would take care it himself, so it would not have to come to blows again. Turkey of course, could provoke the worst of anger in Greece, so any talks by him would turn to taunting, and then a full out fight again. No, that was not the answer.

So he invited Turkey to stay for a weekend.

Turkey was leaning against the window, looking out. Japan had to admit that he was a handsome man in a rugged way. He reminded Japan of the sorts of bad-boy boyfriends in Boy's love and Shoujo, often where a bandit would kidnap a princess, and they would fall in love after many chapters of the tsundere princess rejecting the bandit's teasing.

But life wasn't like a manga, and he'd fallen in love with a gentle one, the kind in stories who always were the runner up, and who Japan always secretly rooted for. Turkey looked just as self-assured as ever, even cocky, and he'd been in a good mood ever since Japan had met him at the airport. He felt disappointed inside that he would have to break that good mood so thoroughly.

Turkey brought in his luggage, just a small carry on of clothes and assorted things, and put it in the spare bedroom. Japan made tea, thinking again over what he would say.

"You wanted to talk to me, right?" Turkey said with a grin. "You had somethin' to tell me like? Finally come to your senses?"

"Please sit down, Turkey-san."

Japan was solemn. He poured out the tea, and blew on it. Turkey complied, frowning in confusion.

"You see, Turkey-san....I value you very much as a friend. I wish to keep that friendship, but I have embarked on a relationship and must humbly, and many apologies, reject your feelings.I hope you can understand."

"Wait, you're saying that you're not confessin' to me? You said you were gonna tell me somethin' important...."

'That time when you helped Greece during that earthquake....it gave me hope that one day you both could reconcile your differences. I hope we all still can be friendly, despite the way things have turned out," Japan said.

The mask remained on, obscuring his expression. "So the old bastard finally bested me, eh?" Turkey laughed, but it seemed forced. Japan expected anger and violence. He expected Turkey to punch the wall, break things, but he did neither.

"Sometimes these things just happen when we expect them to the least," Japan said, as if he were explaining a tragedy. He was subtly apologetic in his own detached, restrained way. Japan folded his hands in his lap, entwining them together. It would be best to not touch Turkey, something he rarely did except to his closest friends. He might send the wrong message, and that was the last thing he wanted.

It was already a difficult enough matter as it was.

His tea sat, slowly cooling. Turkey's tea was ignored as well. Turkey clenched his fist, shaking with rage and untold other mixes of emotion.

"As long as you hold on to your feelings towards me, you'll never realize who really loves you," Japan said. "It blinds you to the obvious."

Turkey seemed to pause a moment. He took off his mask, and set it by the tea.

"Someone else...loves me?" Turkey said.

Japan nodded.

Turkey shook his head. "I just- I need a moment. I don't wanna be breakin' shit in front of you and scarin' you and makin' you think I'm some kind of monster."

"Please take as long as you need," Japan said. He had nothing to make it better. He wasn't sorry for rejecting Turkey, only sorry that it had come to this, that it hadn't faded or Turkey hadn't otherwise gotten his subtly hintings.

He did not worry that any criminals, muggers or Yakuza would hurt Turkey. If they tried, he pitied them, especially in this state.

He felt wearied by it all, and wished for Greece's comforting presence. Even in the worst of stressful times, Greece's languidness was contagious. Just a touch and he would feel renewed, calmed. When he was sure Turkey had left, he reached for the phone. His heart raced with each ring, until finally, he heard a sleep Hello? at the other end.

"It's done...."

"Good," Greece said. "Are you all right?"

"It was tiring, but I think it will turn for the best. He can finally move on now."

"But are you all right?" Greece asked. "He hasn't hurt you?"

Concern tinged his voice, as if he would step across the oceans, walk the miles and fly all night if he could.

"Yes, I am fine. He left, but I think he'll come back soon enough once he's walked off this...unpleasantness."

"Do you want me to come?" Greece asked.

Japan felt the warmth flow through him, even without the physical aspect of touch.

"No, I think it's best that you stay where you are right now. If anything, It'd only start another fight, and he needs time and distance.

Greece let out a sigh. "I'll leave the cell on. Call me if you need anything...don't worry about waking me up, just call."

Japan smiled. He could just imagine the scene: Greece catnapping, surrounded by cats, the cell phone resting by his pillow so he wouldn't miss a call with an Ayumi Hamasaki ringtone Japan had left for him when he had helped set the phone up and taught him how to use it.

"Thank you...thank you for this, and everything," Japan said, words failing him. He always felt awkward at those times. He was far too old to have his heart beating in his chest like some schoolgirl. Far too old for this.

"Anytime," Greece said, his voice colored with fondness.

He heard a sharp Nyoo! on the other end. "Corporalcat? Or is it Calicat this time?"

"Corporalcat recognizes your voice. Here, you can say hi." Greece either lowered the phone or brought Corporalcat up to the phone itself.

"Hello, Corporalcat," Japan said. Another sharp Nyoo.

"Next time I come, I'll bring them tuna. All of them."

"There are...a lot of them. I hope you know what you're doing."

"I'll have to start a whole fund...the Corporalcat Tuna Fund."

Greece chuckled. "They'll love you even more, then."

"Yes...." Japan felt the warmth spill through him, from his core to fingertips. He did not regret the choice. Soon enough, Turkey would return, and perhaps they would talk more, perhaps not.

"You need a rest Do you want me to visit, or do you have time to come...?" Greece asked. His voice trailed off.

"That sounds nice." He thought of of white beaches, Greece's large hands at the small of his back, secret kisses pressed to his neck, to his back, his inner wrist, or whatever body part was closed at the minute.

"I'll book the tickets as soon as possible. Is there a time when you won't be busy? Japan said.

"Come anytime. My door is always open for you."

"It's a good thing to know..." Japan said. He smiled into the receiver, even though he knew Greece couldn't see it. It had simply become his default reaction to Greece, whether he was near or not.

"I think I should go. I'm going to cook some things to steady my nerves. I think Turkey-san will be drinking tonight, but he'll probably be all right. I hope I didn't make things too unpleasant for him here...I'm afraid I gave the wrong impression and he believed that I had confessed."

"He would think that," Greece said, scoffing in derision.

"Please try to get along with him," Japan said. "You both are my friends, you just happen to also be my lover. Could you please not rub it in his face? He's probably quite distraught as it is...this weekend will likely be awkward."

"He's a bastard and a half, but I don't think he'll do anything to you. After the drunken binge, and maybe a few bar brawls, he won't even bring it up," Greece said. "And him and me....we've got bad blood for as long as I can remember. We're not going to become friends overnight, but I'll try to be civil for you, at least."

Japan looked out the window. It was a tense time now, full of disappointment and hurt feelings, but perhaps they'd all get closer for this. The next day and the next would only lead to a truce, and maybe even a grudging friendship between Greece and Turkey. Once Turkey had gotten over his feelings, he could be truly happy with someone who returned his feelings and had for some time.

"Thank you," Japan said. "And do sleep well, even if I interrupt you."

"I'll sleep better if you interrupt me," Greece said, and yawned. He must've stretched too, for several cats made indignant meows.

"As will I," Japan said. "Goodnight for now."

"Good day for you," Greece said, a joke between them in light of the time difference.

Japan closed the phone, and reached for his kerchief. Right now the only way was through this unpleasantness, but he'd get a lot of cooking done. Tomorrow would bring a far better day.

Who was in love with Turkey? I'll leave that up to whoever is reading, though with my shipping preferences, it could be Egypt, Poland, Hungary, or Korea.

I love Japan and Greece's interaction here; it's so them and you can clearly see why Greece was the one Japan fell in love with.

I think they kind of took over the fill, however; I was kind of expecting Turkey to get more of a role than he did. Poor guy just can't win when he has to compete with Greece/Japan, huh?

Another potential filler here anonymous October 29 2010, 21:28:55 UTC
I was actually working on a fill for this from Turkey's POV. You've filled it already, obviously, and very well too, but my fill-in-progress kind of takes a different approach. Would it be okay with you if I finished up mine and posted it here too?

Totally calling it Egypt, btw.
