Everybody Loves Me [8/?]

“Please, don't call me that.” But Matthew didn't buy it. He did at first when he was naïve of how Francis Bonnefoy worked. When he thought the rumors of how willing the country was to bed anything that moved were exaggerated and full of lies. When he thought that the morning after would be filled with France making him pancakes while affectionately kissing his nose; not writhing in the sheets of a certain Dane.
Smile faltering, France attempted to keep an upbeat attitude. His little colony was simply joking, right? “But-“ Pause. Search for the right words. “-... you are my angel!” How original. Instead of pursuing the argument any further, France waved his hand, motioning Canada to come closer. “Come, let's order dessert. My treat, of course ~” Let him live like a heathen, like a sexual deviant. Let him ignore the shame and heartache. Let him believe that he wasn't empty inside. That's all France needed to convince himself that he was pleased with his life; surely, Canada would have to oblige.
It wasn't that easy. Drawing in a deep breath, it took every ounce of courage in Canada's body to stand up and step away from the table. “I...” Why should he stay with a man who couldn't even respect himself? Why should he try to help when all France wanted to do was live a vapid life? Why should he continue to love someone who obviously saw him as a toy to be played with and nothing more? He took another step away. “I cannot stand being with you when you're like this.” The words come out in one hurried breath. France curses himself for being so accustomed to his angel's mumbling; he understood him completely. The European reaches towards him, putting on as much of an apologetic look as he can muster up. It doesn't help.
“I-I'm sorry, Papa.” And Canada brushes past a waiter, making his exit swift. He's tempted to look over his shoulder, to see the face of the man he has grown to adore but he knows it'll only tear his heart apart. Matthew doesn't want to notice the bags under France's eyes or the way that his lips always look raw. Matthew doesn't want to think about how France has probably given that same smile to every one of his God forsaken bed mates. Matthew doesn't want to be reminded of the reasons why they'll never work. So he leaves with his gaze focused on the ground and his arms wrapped around himself.
France watches Canada go, picks up the check and leaves a generous tip before asking where the nearest liquor store is.

So um, author-anon, you're kind of amazing.
Especially for this >i?He shouldn't have to defend himself. Being sexually active, being flirty, being playful, it was normal; it was apart of human nature.
Oh God this story is breaking my heart. This is pretty much my headcanon, that France is so torn up on the inside. I only ever really see superficial fics about France's 'sleeping around' where he's the one always causing problems.
Thank you so much for writing this. I look forward to more.

This fic is beyond amazing. Seriously. I haven't seen any other fics exploring this side of France, so I find it really really interesting. I can't wait to see what happens next!

I'm loving this fill <3
Even though I tried to skim through the France/Canada parts because I'm not a fan of the pairing, I found the story very enjoyable, especially the beginning.
Also, I see two readers already mentioned it, so let me be the one to third the suggestion (which shouldn't be confused with pressure) that France should end up with Germany <3

You're completely killing my heart, anon and I love you for it. <333
Part of me wants to be frustrated at Canada from not trying to help France, but I know France has to want to help himself first. I hope he finds a reason to want to do so.

Christ, I just read parts 1 - 8 myself, and I kind of feel like joining France at that liquor store myself. :'D Okay, not literally, but damn, you're breaking my heart here. This seems way too real. I think I'll take a break and reread later before leaving a longer comment, but for now? I'm so, so glad you took this prompt up. I don't think I recognize your writing, but it's really damn good, and you're handling this with a hell of a lot of sympathy. Very effective and moving, anon. <3

Anon, this is wonderfully amazing and heartbreaking. I love your interpretation of France, and I feel so bad for both him and Canada right now! I love this pairing and I love this fill even more :D
