Words Never Meant So Much [1/??] anonymous October 9 2010, 10:46:45 UTC
Ladida, anon from above checking in with material of a prologue resemblance! The life of a nation was a long one. An elongated period of time filled with moments that they would beg to forget if they could. Arthur never thought he would find something so similar in the life of a human. He was also, at the moment, uncertain as to why he had agreed to come to New York. His grandson had greeted him in passing before turning him to his intended target and disappearing into seemingly thin air. He always had been rather good at that…all the same, his attention was soon on Alfred.

The United States of America was sitting surprisingly still with an unusually void expression on his face. His beloved bomber jacket was draped on the back of his chair, the large ‘50’ fading and somehow still looking proud in the low light. He looked much thinner without the damn thing on, Arthur decided, taking a moment to note how loose Alfred’s suit was before he cleared his throat to make himself known. Bright, baby sky blue eyes turned on him and the look was suddenly a wide grin as the American stood and made to pounce the Brit. Arthur took a cautionary step back, putting his hand up in warning with a small glare, “Alfred, sit your arse back down. I’m in no mood to be suffocated, lad.”

“Ah, sourpuss. Feeling jetlagged, still?” Alfred was still grinning, but did oblige to not pouncing. Instead, he walked over, calmly and pulled his former colonizer into a brief hug, ruffling his hair. The result was a dark scowl at which he grinned even wider. He loved the scowl, even if it meant he was seconds away from being beaten over the head.

“Hardy-har. Dare I ask why you found it so dire to interrupt my summer? I’ve other things to do, rather than spending time playing your inane games.”

“I got an invitation and I wanted you to come with me.” The reply was simple, accompanied by a nonchalant shrug. The void look returned before Arthur could snap at him, causing the Brit to control himself a moment longer, “I was between you and Mattie and…well, I chose you.”

“I’m sure Matthew would be much more comfortable with whatever game you’re up to.”

“It’s not a game…and trust me, Matt…Mattie wouldn’t be the least bit pleased if I asked him to help me.” Alfred rubbed the back of his neck, sheepishly and gave a slightly cheeky grin, “At least let me explain before you yell at me, hit me and go home?”

“You’ve five minutes.”

“I made tea.”

“…Ok, perhaps twenty minutes.” Arthur eyed him suspiciously. Alfred didn’t make tea unless he was trying to guilt trip Arthur into something, or if he was trying to apologize. As they hadn’t had a fight lately, he couldn’t imagine what he’d possibly be apologizing for and slowly sat down. Alfred disappeared, briefly; when he returned, he slid a stars-and-stripes mug towards Arthur and fell back into his previously occupied chair. Arthur let the steam hit his face for a bit, taking a slow sip and watching his former ward over the rim of his mug. A manila folder had appeared on the desk and Arthur immediately scowled, “I swear if you called me over to do your work-.”

“What? Oh! No, I swear that’s not it!” Alfred looked alarmed and slightly guilty that he had attempted that trick before. Still, he shook his head and honesty shining in his eyes, “Swear, I’m not making you do my paperwork. I’m pretty sure my Boss would tan my backside to match my flag.”

Arthur actually snorted into his tea in amusement and nodded, “Very well. What is that then?”

“My invitation. I uhm…well, really it was New York’s idea. His and a few others.” Alfred mumbled, rubbing at the back of his neck, “Normally, he does this kind of thing, but he’s been stressing and the others thought it would be a good idea to give him a little bit of a break. He’s spending the week with Nova Scotia.” Arthur scowled a bit at the mention of his nephew and Alfred promptly gave him a pointed look not to start one of his rants.

“Anyways, he was supposed to be helping out in the crime’s division this week and I volunteered to take over for him so he could spend some relaxing time with Nova Scotia instead of job time.” Alfred shrugged a bit, “And since the division was expecting two people, I have a second invitation and I already said I was between you and Mattie, so…I went with you, because I’m pretty sure Matt would kick my happy ass back to Washington if I tried him.”

“…Matthew has never turned you down for these things before.” Arthur pointed out, eyes narrowing suspiciously, “…What’s the catch, Alfred?”

The American gave a nervous grin and slowly slid the manila folder across the table. Arthur eyed it for a moment, realizing it was facedown. He turned it over slowly, eyeing the large ‘CONFIDENTIAL’ stamp across the front. He flipped the folder open and stared at the first line that caught his eye. ‘Special Victims Unit’. He immediately closed the folder again and shot Alfred a dark look, “No.”

“You didn’t even read it-.”

“This is not a field I particularly care for, Alfred.” Arthur stated, coldly, eyes narrowing, “While I’m glad you didn’t show this to your brother, I fail to see how I was a better decision. Impressionable and easily riled as Matthew may be, he is the calmer between us and would have been the wiser choice between us, am I wrong?”

“Easily riled up, Arthur. I can’t do that to Matt-.”

“But you can do it to me?” His accent was coming heavy with the seething temper and Alfred shook his head desperately.

“No, Christ, no! Arthur, let me finish!” The pleading tone made Arthur simmer for the briefest of moments and he glared hotly at the American, “I worded that wrong and I’m sorry, I really am…I swear there was logic behind it-.”

“Out with it then.” Arthur snapped impatiently.

“You’re older.” The Brit twitched noticeably and Alfred hastily continued, “I asked you because you’ve had more experience. You’ve been alive longer than me and Mattie. He was my first choice, being my brother and being closer…but…you’re right. He gets riled up easily; he takes on the weight of the world without meaning to and something like this…I just…I couldn’t. You owned the world before, Arthur…if…I thought if anyone could help me…help us, rather, I just met the team earlier…if anyone, it’d be you.”

Arthur simmered slowly and continued to glower, “There are others just as old, if not more so than myself. Bonnefoy, Braginski and Oxensteirna for example. Wong or Honda would have sufficed as well.”

“I’m not going to ask dad.” Arthur scowled at the title and Alfred pointedly ignored it, continuing calmly, “Natalia would have tried to tag along with Ivan; Berwald freaks me out and I would never leave Tino at Peter’s mercy alone. Yao keeps bringing up the debt when we’re within earshot of each other and Kiku doesn’t trust me with a loaded gun. All of that aside though…can’t we just leave it at I trust you?” His voice was uncharacteristically quiet and he’d dropped his gaze to the table.

Arthur kept quiet a bit longer before giving something that just barely resembled a frustrated sigh, though it was more defeated than anything, “…Fine.”

“…Serious?”

“Serious.”

“…Really?”

“Really.”

“…Really, really-.”

“Alfred, if you ask me one more time I’m going to get back on a plane.” Arthur warned and Alfred shut his mouth. He looked relieved and leaned across the table, pulling the Brit into a hug despite his angry flails and sputtering.

“You’re the best Iggy. I think you’ll really like the team, too. Detective Stabler reminds me of you…like, a lot. And Fin’s totally cool, even though every time someone says his name I look for Tino and it’s like ‘oh, God, what’s Tino doing here and where the fuck is Peter’. Oh! And detective Benson’s pretty awesome, too-.”

Arthur let the American chat away, taking slight note of the fact there was still worry in his eyes. He could chatter all he wanted; Arthur knew he was still hiding something. He’d get it out of him later if the files didn’t tell him. He hummed when appropriate, but had mostly turned his attention to the folder. He reopened it calmly and began scanning through it, pushing his mug back towards Alfred for a refill; he had a feeling he was going to need it.

Author anon checking in with magical set up chapter! Very prologue-like this is, for the following reasons:
-I fail at first chapters and never feel half as bad if I get past the fail with a prologue.
-I wanted a buffer opening to post a fair warning to anyone who might be reading. Onto the warning; those that know what SVU is should be expecting this, but for those who are not as familiar and just glancing at this: there will mildly to heavily depicted gore, drug-use, violence and potential sex of dub-con, non-con and comforting varieties depending on which case(s) I go with. ...In saying that, the only gore is in reference to the bodies and potential autopsies that may weasel their way in. *coughs*

Hmm...I haven't got much else to say. I have headcanon names for New York and Nova Scotia, but I didn't bother with them to keep from distracting from the plotline as...well, they were a passing mention and aren't too likely to pop back up. ...Well, now I'm fairly sure I've run out of things to say, so, ta muffins! I hope to have more...soon-ish! orz *is horrible with updating and is often distracted by real life but will try to be focused!*

As an avid fan of Law & Order SVU, I'm both curious and afraid how this would affect America's mental health, especially the particular sensitive cases they handle.

like that one ep of the pedophile cult leader who escaped but shot all the cult kids dead in the apartment first so as to not leave any witnesses... that was traumatic to some of the SVU folks

The mental affects will be explored, have no fear :3 *is very much a psychological and angst whore*

I do vaguely remember catching the first five or so minutes of that episode and I'm sure I'll stumble across it soon enough. *watching all the episodes while she's typing*

"In the criminal justice system, sexually based offenses are considered especially heinous. In New York City, the dedicated detectives who investigate these vicious felonies are members of an elite squad known as the Special Victims Unit. These are their stories."

One question, though... anonymous October 10 2010, 16:53:52 UTC
Everything is great as for introductions go, dear writer!anon, but the question is:

Who is "dad"? As in America saying: "I'm not going to ask dad", and then England making a face at that.

I felt my brain screech to a halt there. Who could possibly be labeled his "dad"? By process of elimination in that paragraph I am left with France...that's not possible, right? *completely floored here*

Reply

Authornon~ anonymous October 10 2010, 22:28:42 UTC
No, no, you were correct in assumption of France being referenced as 'dad'. My apologies, that was a bit of headcanon slipping in there.

Thank you for reading all the same! *huggles go here!*

Oh, thanks for taking the time to answer this curious!floored!anon.

I am definetely going to read your fill, I can only foresee OSOMSAUCE ahead!!

But your headcanon still makes me curious LOL Is your headcanon something like a FACE family idea? Where France is Dad and Canada is Brother...and England is Mom? I've read those stories, so very nice and well-written, most of them! *nodsnods*

But if that is the case...America would not ask his "dad" but would ask his "mom"? Or your America doesn't consider England for the "mom" role? O_o Which is kind of sad, you know, if you compare it to America labeling France as "dad". England gave out his everything for child!America, so how come is France regarded as the parent figure instead?

...but if you tell me this is all for the sake of USUK sexytimezzz, then by all means GO GO GO.

*is being a retard, sorry luv*

Re: CuriousAnon anonymous October 11 2010, 09:03:22 UTC
Questions are totally awesome, anon =3 And I'm always happy to answer.

My head-canon does somewhat revolve around the FACE family idea with America and Canada as siblings and France and England as parental figures. I'm not entirely sure I would always label England as the 'mother' figure, as it depends on the time period and which sibling I'm referring to at the time and what the situation happens to be.

In America's case, France is the "parental/father figure" while England can be considered a "former paternal figure turned influential sibling". To me, France retains the 'father figure' with Prussia and Antonio as uncles, as the those three were...pretty much the only reason America won its revolution. England, despite the rift with America after the revolution was still a pretty big influence, since we basically stole most of our Industrial Revolution from them, if I recall right, among other things.

In turn, Canada started out as New France, but became the British Dominion of Canada after the Seven Years/French and Indian War and as such, retained England as a parental country while France became the "influential brother" figure.

With saying that, in regards to the story, England did indeed give his everything for child!America and for now he does still see America-and Canada- as children he needs to protect. I won't spoil the story much more, but I can promise that while Iggy-boo and America aren't in a relationship, they will be developing towards one, because, well, I can't resist.

Anyways! I hope I managed to answer your question! If not, by all means, just say so and I'll try to think up a way to make it clearer =3! *likes answering questions*

Well my lady, you have certainly answered my question, thank you so much. Ahh such nice writers!anon we have these days.

And while now I understand your headcanon *whispers* even if I don't agree with it.

I mean, that's really okay because our headcanons are every single one of them FANON since, well, we are fans LOL and to quote the Caesar "men believe what they wish". Each of us can choose interpretations and the such. And respect and love each other, peace in earth and etc.

I still think that while France was indeed a decisive force in favor of America winning his Revolution, the French fought for reasons that had very little to do with the pure benefit of the 13 colonies (pardon my realism here XD) And so, America is more bound to consider France the big brother turned quasi-hero-back-then, while England before and during the Revolution was the parental figure, although with the passing of time Arthur finally becomes a former parental figure, since America broke free and grew so damn fast.

Putting that aside, England probably doesn't want to be considered "dad/mom" anyway, at least not anymore. But it must be a bit...disappointing, to hear Alfred giving such familiar names to other people while he sits there doing all the dirty work.

Or that is just me, projecting XDDD Anyway, great thing that you gave me the opportunity to chat you up. Thanks! I look forward to the boys developing a relationship! Those are my favorite stories!! *sends lots of love and cookies, expect airmail soon ne!*

I'm intrigued by this fill as well as very, very anxious about what kind of case my favourite boys are going to get. *cringes and bites nails*

You've had a good start so far and also given me a sudden craving for tea. And it'll be interesting to read SVU fic instead of watching it all the time. XD;;;;
