“Dementors,” Arthur explained, smiling with relief that Alfred, stupid git, was alright.

“I’ll say. But what were they? Jeez, I felt like...” Those bright blue eyes drifted off to somewhere far away, and then Alfred snapped back. “So, you saved me?” he asked. Arthur nodded. “How?” At that moment, Arthur’s patronus felt the need to bound up to them, as if checking to make sure that they were okay, and glow all over Alfred as it licked at his face and wagged its tail so hard that it wiggled all over. He pulled away and stared at it, and then smiled and petted its head before trying to sit up. Arthur helped him. “What’s with the glowing dog?”

“That’s my patronus,” Arthur said. “It’s a spirit guide, of sorts. It’s protecting us from the Dementors. Look, are you sure you’re all right?”

“I’ll be fine,” Alfred said, even though his trademark grin wasn’t back to one-hundred percent brilliance yet. “So your spirit guide is a small dog?”

“A Cavalier King Charles, actually.” Arthur was preening slightly. After all, it wasn’t the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog.

“Not a corgi? The Queen likes those, doesn’t she?” Alfred, bless his heart, sounded honestly confused about this.

“...Corgis are Welsh,” Arthur pointed out. “And besides, I’m not the Queen.” Alfred opened his mouth, but was silenced with what could only be described as a Look. Nearby, a Dementor wailed particularly loudly, and there was a bright white flash of light. Arthur and Alfred both looked, and saw a large German Shepherd breaking through the swarm of Dementors. But it wasn’t a normal German Shepherd: not glowing all-over white and breaking through Dementors like matchsticks as it was. It was, in fact, a patronus.

And its tall, blond caster was quick to follow behind it.

“England!” Germany bellowed. “What is the meaning of this? It’s unsafe and irresponsible to have Dementors loose among Muggles, let alone in a city as big as London. Where is your Ministry?” And then Germany saw Alfred sitting on the ground looking dazed, and he crouched down and felt his forehead in concern. He reached into his suit jacket pocket and pulled out a chocolate bar, breaking off a couple of pieces and giving them to Alfred.

“Wh-” But then Alfred looked at the chocolate and shrugged, popping it into his mouth. He brightened almost instantly. “Thankth, Germany!” he said through the mouthful, but Germany was already rounding on Arthur again. Arthur stood to defend himself proper, and his patronus came to heel at his feet, ready to spring and defend its caster against the angry German Nation (or the German Nation’s patronus, who sat calmly next to Germany).

“Do you think I like having Dementors breeding in my capital?” Arthur snapped. “Believe me, I’m well-aware that this is a bad situation, and I’ll be investigating-”

“You mean you don’t know what’s going on? Do you converse with your Ministry at all?”

“No, I trust them to handle things on their own.” He would never admit it, but he was starting to feel like his policy hadn’t been right.

“...They’re doing a fantastic job.” The dry sarcasm from Germany surprised him, and made him laugh despite himself. “I think we should call the Summit for the year. Imagine the international incident if a Nation should fall victim to a Dementor.” Arthur didn’t have to imagine. He looked down to Alfred, who was currently trying to coerce Arthur’s patronus into a game of razzle. (Shamefully enough, he seemed to be succeeding.)

“I think you’re right,” Arthur said. Germany’s patronus pricked up and hunched down with a growl. Arthur looked at the patronus, but Germany looked at what his patronus had balked at.

To say that the patronus that joined them then was big would be a slight understatement. The glowing white bear reared up on its hind paws and batted a Dementor so hard that the dark creature faded into the mist. It gave this treatment to a few others, while its caster approached. Russia smiled widely and waved with his wand hand, holding the wand with his thumb and forefinger as he waved.

“Ah, privyet! Germany, England, what cute patronuses you have! Do you like mine? She is very good at protecting me.” He giggled, then, and only then noticed Alfred kneeling on the ground giving Arthur’s patronus a thorough belly rub. “Ah, Amerika, do you not have a patronus?” He acted like it was a novel concept that Alfred didn’t have magic. Alfred stood up quickly.

“Maybe I do,” he countered.

“He doesn’t,” Arthur quipped.

“England, cut me some slack here!” Alfred whined, and fell to pouting when he didn’t get a response.

“Are we going to go inside?” Russia asked. “Or will we have the meeting outside today?” He giggled again. “It would be very interesting to see everyone’s patronuses. It shows almost as much about what someone is like as their Boggart does, da?” The air chilled around Russia as he giggled under his breath, and the great bear patronus lumbered over to sit next to its caster.

“Actually,” Germany said, “we’re cancelling meetings for the day. And for the rest of the summit. It isn’t safe to be here, and some Nations don’t even have magic to protect them.” Russia looked disappointed, but then his attention was grabbed and he perked up.

“Ooh! Look, I think that is China’s patronus. It looks like one of his panda bears.” Which, indeed, it did, and it was flanked on one side by an enormous tiger, and on the other by a rather smaller monkey.

“Oh come on!” America whined, as China, Taiwan, and Kaoru approached, each claiming their patronus. “Really? Am I the only person who doesn’t have any damn magic?”

“Sorry I’m late, guys!” called a voice similar to Alfred’s, and Alfred spun around with a look of immense relief on his face.

“Matt! Am I glad to see you, man, I-” Matthew was walking alongside an immense, pure white moose. “Fuck me sideways! Et tu, Mattie?!”

“Oh stop being so melodramatic,” Arthur said, and rolled his eyes.

“E-eh?” poor Matthew whimpered, eyes going wide with confusion behind his glasses. He noticed all of the other patronuses, and then noticed that one was conspicuously absent. “Oh. Yeah, I guess? I’m sorry, bro. But at least ours will all keep the Dementors away, eh?” But Alfred was sulking.

“I’m afraid that due to these unforeseen dangerous circumstances, I’m going to have to cancel the Summit until further notice,” Arthur announced. A large wolf patronus who Arthur actually recognised padded up then and sat down with them. And indeed, Norway was quick to follow behind, standing next to his patronus.

“You know, it really shouldn’t be necessary to have to summon a guardian spirit just to get to a meeting unmolested,” the slight Northern Nation remarked dryly.

“That’s right!” said China, scowling. “And this problem can’t have appeared overnight. You must have known about it, and you should have called off the meeting much sooner.” Arthur scowled, his brows knitting together.

“I like the Dementors,” Russia giggled. “Their fog makes it cooler and much more homey for me.”

“...If everyone’s just about finished criticising me, I’ll thank you to let me finish what I was saying.” Silence reigned for a moment, but was broken just as Arthur cleared his throat to continue.

“...I’m not finished,” Kaoru said.

“Me neither!” Taiwan chimed in. China looked smugly at Arthur.

“You are now,” Arthur snapped. “As I was saying-”

“Rude!” China exclaimed. “Let them talk!”

“No! We’re in my capital, and what I have to say will get all of you out of my bloody hair that much faster! So belt up!” There was grumbling. Oh, was there grumbling. But Arthur couldn’t be arsed to care. He straightened his suit jacket and cleared his throat again. “We’ll have to somewhat organise the evacuation of Nations so that no non-magic user is without protection.”

“I have a patronus guarding Italy at the moment,” Germany said. Arthur nodded acknowledgement.

“Luckily, I believe the breeding grounds are limited to my country, so if you all simply leave in as few planes as possible, you should be fine, really. Even the Channel Tunnel should be alright, so long as no non-magic-user is left alone. But...” he looked around at the assembled magic-users, lingered on his former colonies for a moment. “If any of you wanted to stay and help me deal with this problem, assistance would be more than welcome.”

“With all due respect,” Kaoru said carefully, because he had always been the quiet, stoic one. “I think we should all mind our own business.”

“Agreed with Hong Kong,” Germany said, even though he sounded sympathetic to Arthur’s plight. “If the problem spreads to our lands, you’ll have our personal assistance, but until then I think we should remain neutral. If you need to ask anything of me other than that, however, it will be available to you.” Germany knew magic problems.

“Me too,” Russia said with a wide, childlike smile. “I am very skilled with the...uh, what do you call them? The Dark Arts.” A chill ran down Arthur’s spine.

“Yeah, Arthur, I’ve got your back too,” Matthew said with a shy smile. The other Nations were more grudging and political about pledging their alliance, but they all did.

“Thank you,” Arthur said. “I have the feeling that if this escapes my boundaries, that will be very bad. So I’ll try to keep it contained. For all of our sakes.”

“Hey!” Alfred piped up. “You didn’t let me offer you my help!” Arthur flicked him in the forehead.

“You’re a squib, America,” he said. “The way you can best help me is to go home.”

“But I’m a hero,” Alfred whined, rubbing his forehead and pouting. Honestly, sometimes he was worse than a child! Had he even acted this spoilt when he was young enough for it to work? Russia tittered behind a hand at their bickering.

“Matthew, I charge you to get your brother within his own boundaries,” Arthur said. Matthew nodded. Alfred sulked. Honestly, Arthur felt a little bad for the lad: he probably wasn’t aware that so many other Nations could practise magic. He would just have to make sure that Alfred knew which of the others couldn’t.

“I don’t need a babysitter,” Alfred grumbled, earning a ‘really now?’ look from both Matthew and Arthur that shut him up quickly.

“So then we should all go back to our hotels and make sure that everyone is all right,” Arthur said decisively. “And start making preparations to go back home.” The patronuses looked at their casters, and then as a united group moved to surround them as they all started walking back to the various hotels where Nations were staying.

So this is the prologue. I do intend to incorporate the bonuses (because making this a USUK was one of the selling points that made me sit down with it), and I’ve done lots of worldbuilding. My plans for this include bringing in England’s brothers to help, since (with Hogwarts being in Scotland, least of all) the Wizarding War is certainly not limited to just England, so that’s a warning, I guess, for OCs. (And I don’t believe in Pixiv!Scotland)

Also, obviously to those who know HP canon, it’s overlapping with the beginning of Half-Blood Prince. Except in this, when I bring the Order in, Sirius won’t be dead. I’m already throwing the Nation of England into it, after all, I’m allowed to deviate from the HP timeline. c:

A quick note on human/Nation names, as well: I’ll be using them as a shorthand to denote relationships between characters. Basically, a Nation name is professional, like referring to someone as “Mr./Ms. X” or even “Robert” instead of “Bob”. It’s saying “You matter to me because of your job.” When human names come in, that’s saying “you matter to me as a person”. Dialogue comes harder to Nations when it comes to the switch than narrative, so the relationship is really important if they call each other by human name. (Well, England calls his brothers by their human names because in his Empireing days he did it to deNationise them and it...kind of stuck.)

So, OC Nation names that’ll come up later, since they’re important.

Wales is Wyn, Scotland is Rory, and Ireland is Turlough. That’s it. c: I try to make it easy. See you next time!

Thrilled OP here! This is an amazing start, anon! I'd debated mentioning other nations could come too since magic in Harry Potterverse is not limited to England, but didn't want to make the request too lengthy or specific. So imagine my absolute glee when Germany walked onto the scene. The setup so far is exciting, and the dialogue is wonderful. I'd point out some specific lines I loved, but then I think I'd end up quoting half this prologue.

I think it's my new headcannon that Russia has a boggart locked up in his house somewhere. Also I'm absolutely in love with Arthur's patronus. Adorable, kickass, playful puppy for the win!

Thank you thank you thank you for filling this!

I think you did a great job with the ambientation. Russia patronus is cuute like him!!XD Poor America! Even Germany had a patronus (and it's difficult for me to see him and magic in the same sentence). I'm looking foward too see the reaction of the magic world to the REAL world (meaning the Nation). And some good UsxUk is always good for my health^^

GREAT WORK!!

The Love I feel for you at this moment cannot be expressed by feeble words, beloved authornon. Anon here has been waiting for such request since the beginning of times. I was rather biased to write it myself, but I can't compete to your prowess.

This is so amazing. I love you. And to clarify, is Hong Kong's patronus the tiger? And I do wonder where authors get "Kaoru" from. This anon will so be stalking the fill page for this!

Hong Kong's patronus is actually the monkey. The tiger is Taiwan. Macaques (such as is HK's patronus) are known to be mischievous, and I felt like that kind of suited a personality trait for HK that he doesn't necessarily outwardly express but that comes through in, say, him doing asshole things to England with fireworks.

As for Kaoru, I was just told that it was a common human name for him (I wtf'd at it too, though) and since he's just in this chapter I figured it would be easier to go with something that people might recognise as HK than research and make up a whole new name that I would have to explain (and probably screw up, since I don't know Chinese at all).

If you don't mind me butting in, Kaoru is actually a fan name that the Japanese fans gave to him, because Hong Kong in Chinese = 香港 and 香 = Kaoru in Japanese.

So yeah, it's a common name for him among the Japanese fans, but to a Chinese speaking fan it's kind of weird for Hong Kong to be sporting a Japanese name ;;;

I had thought the tiger to be Korea, though, because it's his unofficial national animal.

Nevertheless, I'm thoroughly enjoying this fill and and nations with magic <3
