Priorities [Russia -> Liet <-> Poland] [4/4] anonymous September 7 2010, 00:42:26 UTC

It was a cool evening, not quite spring yet, when Lithuania knocked on his door.

Russia smiled when he opened it, genuinely pleased to see him coming over of his own volition. "Lithuania! Come in, come in..."

"I can't stay long," Lithuania said. Russia hid his disappointment behind a bland smile.

"We have all been busy of late," he said, with a small nod. "Your diligence is appreciated, comrade."

For some reason, Lithuania shuddered, and his eyes seemed to harden. "I have something for you, Russia."

"For me?" Bewildered, Russia took the envelope from his territory's hands. Opening it, he scanned the typed words at the top of the page, then the long list of signatures beneath it. He stood still as a statue, blinked, and read the document again.

"Lithuania?" Lithuania was silent. "What... is the meaning of this?"

The smaller nation's voice shook, but his eyes were steady. "It's a declaration of independence."

Before either of them really knew what had happened, Russia had struck out with the back of his hand. It knocked Lithuania back a step, and within seconds, his cheek began to redden.

"Is not a funny joke," Russia said. His smile hadn't faded, but his voice was soft as death. "Comrade Lithuania should apologize, da?"

"Ne. I'm leaving, Russia."

Russia's eyes went cold. Grabbing the front of Lithuania's shirt, he pinned him to the nearest wall. "You are not," he snarled, shoving him back hard enough to bruise. "Have you forgotten whose you are?"

Lithuania pushed him away, and Russia was stunned, more at his audacity than at his strength, He dropped him in shock.

"I don't understand," he said, feeling numb. Lonely. Cold.

"I don't belong to you," said Lithuania, almost wonderingly. Then, more firmly: "I'm my own nation."

Russia fumbled for the flask in his pocket, struggled to get the lid open, dropped it on the floor with shaking hands. "I don't understand," he said again. "Why?"

Lithuania thought of lonely eyes and false smiles, nights spent pretending in his mind that he was anywhere else, the anguish of seeing his people punished for defiance, the terror of seeing it happen again.

He thought of brief, desperate meetings in coat closets and safehouses, of honest laughter and a smile whose brightness put the sun to shame, even in the darkest of times, of green eyes full of pride and hope.

There had been a time, long centuries ago when he was fearless. Unbeatable. Surely... surely, just this once, he could call on that feeling again.

"Lithuania?" There was just a little bit of hope in Russia's voice; perhaps he thought that Lithuania was rethinking things.

Lithuania turned his back on the crumbling empire. "Because," he said, "I love Poland more than I fear you."

He left Russia sitting stunned by the door to his study, and didn't stop walking until he reached Poland's border.

"Like, what kept you?"

Lithuania felt young again.

That was really beautiful! I really really loved the description of Poland's hands, and Poland was really in character so that was great! Go Liet! Poor Russia... (at least he'll get Belarus back :p)

Eeeee~

LietPol is one of my OTPs, but what I really like about this fill is that you didn't turn Russia into a heartless villain. You gave him motivation and actually made me feel really bad for the poor guy, so kudos to you.

Don't worry Russia, you'll always have Belarus!

I loved this. I loved Lithuania's strength which is so rarely shown and I loved how you tried to make us understand how Russia's actions came from his desperation and pain and loneliness and how much he suffered right along with everyone else.
This was wonderful I think I got a little teary while reading it.
