A Small Opening

Just a little mini-fill, Belarus opening up to Lithuania a bit.
"I cannot understand you!" she spat at him as she stormed past.
Lithuania tore after her. He couldn't remember the last time she'd spoken directly to him. "Belarus, wait!"
She spun to face him when he caught her with a hand on her shoulder. He couldn't help flinching as she turned - the look on her face was pure rage, and he was honestly surprised when she didn't strike him.
"What's wrong?" he asked softly.
She bored into him with her glare for several agonizingly long moments before she spoke. "You would not understand."
"Maybe not," he admitted. "But I would try."
She eyed him with obvious mistrust. "You, out of everyone, are least capable of understanding."
Absurdly, small, warm hope flared inside of him, just knowing she thought of him. "I don't want to see you upset. Tell me?"
She resumed her glare, jutting her narrow jaw forward, and for a moment he thought she was going to walk away from him. "You have the one thing I truly desire and you despise it!"
He blinked, swallowed nervously, wishing he could think of another way to interpret her words.
She evidently took his silence for confusion. "I will never understand why he chose you to love."
"I... I don't think we choose who we love." He closed his eyes. "And it isn't as though... it isn't as though you aren't loved." Opened them, wondering if he could manage those three words. He met her eyes. "I..." He faltered.
She pursed her lips. "Do not say it."
He nodded, knowing he should be disappointed, but unable to quiet that little glow of hope in his chest. "It is true, though."
She looked away. "I know." With a curt nod, she turned, disappearing down the hall.
Even as he watched her go, he couldn't help smiling. It was just the smallest of openings she'd let him glimpse through, but he would treasure it, and maybe someday, it would happen again.
