Fountain of Fire & Ice -- Part 17c anonymous November 22 2010, 01:34:01 UTC
An hour later, deep in the middle of the store, surrounded by screaming and squealing children with his son looking intently at the stuffed animals, he was still wondering if he shouldn't have decided against this little trip. Russia was off somewhere, probably still staring in fascination at the giant spaceship made of Legos, and America had been dragged to this section by Sasha who seemed to intent on finding something. America wanted to open his mouth to remind Sasha of his promise but held back. He couldn't reprimand his son until he'd actually done something wrong.

"Yes," Sasha said triumphantly and pulled a toy out from under a jumbled pile. "They still have one!"

America eyed the toy in question curiously. It was a stuffed sunflower. He turned a questioning glance at his son who grinned expectantly back at him. America knew that look. That was the 'buy this for me please' look.

"Sasha you promised," he reminded him pointedly. "You're still in trouble..."

"It's not for me dad," Sasha said easily hugging it to his chest. "It's for Papa."

America started at him for a long moment. Opened his mouth to say something and then quickly closed it. Russia probably would like the sunflower. It was cute and well...it was a sunflower. And it was sweet of Sasha to want to buy Russia something so thoughtful. He sighed already knowing what was coming.

"Please," Sasha said brightly.

"Sasha..." he said in an exasperated voice, already feeling his resolve crumbling under the beaming smile so familiar to the one that Russia would probably give when he received the flower. A smile that America didn't get to see very often.

"Do you think he won't like it?" Sasha asked his tone turning soft and a worried as he looked at the flower. "I mean I know it's not something that you usually give your dad but...he likes sunflowers doesn't he?"

"Yeah, Sash, he does," America agreed quickly. "He probably would like it a lot especially if he got it from you." He stared at his son who was still looking at the flower with some hesitation. He wondered for a moment if he was being played but he didn't think Sasha had mastered that level of manipulation yet and he rather hoped he never would. "Okay, you can get it for him."

"Really?" Sasha asked brightly clasping the flower tightly to his chest and then launched himself at America wrapping his arms around his waist in a tight hug. "Thank you, Dad!"

"Hold up there buddy," America said hugging back and then moving them back so he could give Sasha a serious look. "It's coming out of your allowance. You're private allowance..." he hurried to add at Sasha's worried expression. "Not anything for the State. But you want to get this for him you're getting it for him and not me, okay?"

"Okay?" Sasha said with a wide smile.

"Here..." America said digging in his pocket and pulling out his wallet and pulling out a jumble of bills and handing them over to him. He didn't even bother to count how much he'd just passed over. He really was horrible at putting his foot down and sticking to his guns.

"Thank you," Sasha said with a smile.

"Alright then," America said. "Let's got check out before he comes back from...wherever he wandered off to."

Sasha grabbed his hand and pulled him back across the store towards the checkouts. He was rather proud how his son didn't even bat an eye at the candy or trinkets that he might have felt the need to plead for any other time. True to his earlier word he had not asked or even silently pleaded to get anything other then the sunflower. They checked out the cashier smiling as Sasha carefully counted out a enough folded bills to make his purchase. She grinned as she handed him his change and his receipt and told him to have a nice day just like she would any grown up customer. America smiled at her as the left the register and headed towards the exit.

Then he turned his attention back into the story trying to see if he could spot Russia amongst the crowd. It should be easy since he stood taller then most people. Still he didn't see any sign of a wheat colored hair or the long pale colored scarf that was ever present. He tried to remember what colored coat Russia had been wearing but drew a blank.

"Where is he?" he muttered in irritation. "I though he'd have gotten tired of waiting and would be looming in some corner terrifying all the children by now."

"Dad..." Sasha said and though America wasn't looking at him he could practically hear the eye roll that accompanied the remark. "I'll go look for him. Go outside and wait..."

"Sasha..." America said and then as Sasha darted away from him and out of reach. "Sasha!"

He watched worriedly as his son shot across the room, easily dodging children and their parent's. Sasha was always so shy and reserved around the people he had to work with but children he seemed more at ease around and almost comfortable if given enough time. America made a mental note to see about getting him involved with more programs with kids his own age. Or at least those that looked his own age. He mentally kicked himself for not thinking of it sooner he remembered his own loneliness growing up before Canada had come to join them. Maybe he was isolating Sasha a bit too much in fear that there was really no longer any place for.

His eyes narrowed as he watched Sasha hurry up to the second level and over towards where the space toys were located. There he noticed a familiar pale head. It was almost as if Sasha had told him to wait there for him. His suspicion mounted as Sasha pulled Russia out of view deeper into the aisles. He sighed and wondered if he should go up there and make sure that Sasha didn't talk Russia into buying him something. Then he shook his head. That was Russia's decision...mistake...to make. If he wanted to spend more time with their son then he was going to have to learn to deal with all of it. With a slight smile he moved outside of the building where he knew there were benches so he could wait out of the way if the bustling crowd moving in and out of the building.

He didn't have to wait long Sasha and Russia emerged from the store a half hour later and sure enough there was a medium sized bag clutched in his hand. He raised his eyebrow at Russia who stared right back at him and then casually glanced down at the bag in America's own hand and raised a knowing brow of his own. America frowned, he couldn't very well give away the fact that Sasha had essentially paid for the item on his own and that it was for Russia. So he just handed over the bag to Sasha and turned his back on the both of them opening his cell phone to alert the driver that they were ready to be picked up. He pointedly ignored Russia's soft chuckling behind him knowing it was directed at him. When he turned back around he was greeted by Sasha's cheerful, expectant face.

"Can we go get burgers and ice cream before we go home? I'm starved!"

"Sasha..." America repeated in growing exasperation. "That sounds an awful lot like something someone who is supposed to be in trouble shouldn't be allowed to do."

"But we've got to eat right?" Sasha said his face falling a little bit. "And...we don't have anything good enough for Papa in the house so we'll have to order out and you'll probably just order burgers anyway..."

"Aleksandr!" he bit off in pure exasperation but that only seemed to make his son all the more cheerful and caused Russia to chuckle again. He swung his eyes around pinned the other nation with a stern glance. "You could help you know..." he growled tightly.

"I am only a guest," Russia replied easily, a twinkled playing deep in his eyes. "I would not wish to overstep my boundaries and do something to undermine your parental discipline."

"You..." he practically snarled.

"Uh...Dad?" Sasha interrupted tentatively. "Papa? Is everything okay?"

America blinked, set one final heated glare in Russia's direction which only caused Russia to grin all the much more at him, then he turned his attention back to his son who was growing more and more worried by the second as his eyes darted between them. He stepped over and gently ruffled Sasha's hair and wrapped an arm around him.

"No...nothing's wrong," he said gently. "Your Papa and I were just having a...discussion..."

Russia snorted openly at that. America turned his head and glared even more darkly at him. The next time they were alone the two of them were going to have a very serious discussion about what constituted undermining parental discipline. From the raised brow shot back at him it was clear that Russia not only knew what he was thinking he was looking forward to it.

"Alright...we can go get burgers and ice cream..."

"Yes!" Sasha exclaimed bouncing around excitedly.

"But that's it...then we're going back to the apartment and that's where you'll be staying until it's time for you to head back home. You got that?" he said sternly.

"Yes, Dad," Sasha said with a nod of his head.

Then Sasha turned back and grabbed Russia's arm and pulled him towards the waiting car. He babbled excitedly about the restaurant they'd be going to and the kind of ice cream he'd be having afterwards. Which quickly devolved into him changing his mind about thirty times within the space of a minute. America paused outside the door to the car and sighed heavily.

He was definitely regretting this decision

Author's Note: I had planned this to be the last part but have since decided it would be better story flow to split up what I'd originally saw as the last part into two parts even though length wise this part isn't too long. Maybe I'm just not ready to give up Sasha just yet. ;-)

Author's Note #2: Speaking of Sasha a friend off meme did me the kindness of drawing up Sasha for me and he's so perfect I couldn't help but share him. He's perhaps a bit older then I envision him in the story but yeah...I love him. <3

Man, this fic is so awesome, I love it <3

Sasha is so cute! I d'awwwed about the sunflower plush, and America is trying to hard and failing at keeping his distance...I'm also enjoying Russia's amusement and convenient 'washing my hands off this parent thing' on the excuse of not trampling on America's authority, lol. He's so cleverXD
And Russia being fascinated by child space toys <3<3<3

That mention of America's seriousness was great. His glare when he realises Sasha gave his stupid cover up was awesome, it fits my headcanon to a 't'
