Antonio’s night has been awful, populated with monsters of anxiety, and a obscure sort of guilt sitting firmly on his chest throught it all. He has awoken at least five times, always with Romano’s name on his lips, always with that question in his head: why was he so angry?
Usually, Romano would welcome him with his usual display of hidden affection - he’d hit him and call him idiot, but he’d cling to his arm desperately, talking quickly of nothing, with the excuse of showing him around what little change may have happened in the small village - like he was scared Antonio would go away again if he let him.
His reaction had never been one of downright refusal. Yes, it was true that Antonio had never wrote, after having promised he would - but they always exchanged similar promises in the past, and those never held any significance - neither of them ever wrote. Antonio simply had no head to remember this kind of thing, or at least he didn’t when he was younger, while Romano hated doing anything that could be constructed as an admission of actually missing his best friend.
And Romano hadn’t wrote either this time too, anyway. Althought Antonio had learnt some years ago that Romano’s own behaviour was almost never an indication of the way he expected the others to reciprocate - instead it was, almost always, a pre-emptive defense against what Romano himself imagined to be the others’ worst possible strike.
That kid was so scared of the world.
But still, that did nothing to explaing what was going on. What was different this time?
Sitting on his bed, while the first pink rays of dawn were starting to tinge the horizon, he pondered the problem.
Since yesterday it had been the first time they had seen each other after he landed in Sicily, there was no question of something happening upon his arrival. And, while Romano had proved in the past to be perfectly able to fight with Antonio in his absence - once, he had also admitted it was actually better, since Antonio was ‘too dumb’ to fight properly when he was present - he had also been just as quick to forgive him for any wrong, either factual or perceived.
In fact, Antonio had half-expected his friend to appear on his door, later in the day, with that blush and that way of tilting his head just so, which were the closer he ever got to an apology. Antonio had to wonder if this older, mature Romano would do that too, and if it would look just as cute, and if the red skin on his cheek would feel as warm as it looked...
No, he didn’t have to wonder that at all.
But still, Romano hadn’t come, and the perspective of passing another day without him was quite annoying - the place was boring without him, without his constant nagging and bickering and fighting, and after so much time away, Antonio really needed somebody to adjourn him on everything that may have happened in his absence.
Probably not much, considering the place, but he still needed to see Romano, to have his arm wrapped tightly around his...
So, the problem did not lie with something that Antonio had done after arriving, nor with something that had happened in the three years they had not seen each other.
Or wait, could it?
Maybe Romano had grown tired of waiting for him. Maybe he had went and found another friend, one that was there with him all time, and maybe he was with him right now - not, that was improbable, considering it wasn’t the dawn yet and Romano never awoke before midday if he could help it.
But it was possible - in fact it was probable that Romano, lonely and bored, had finally let some of that charme that only Antonio was usually able to squeeze out of him shine through, just for enough time to attract another unfortunate being like a moth to a flame.
And, while Antonio knew that the idea should have made him feel happy for his friend, that he would still be able to spend time with Romano and his mysterious friend, something kept on telling him this wasn’t quite right, somehow - not as right as Antonio and Romano alone were.
He had knew Romano first, learnt all his moods and tempers, how to tame and unleash him.
It was his right, plain and simple - Romano was his.

I can’t help but write Spain as a funny dork, even in angsty roles.
Fuck, I missed writing in this style. Purple is the prettiest color of the rainbow!
Now that was a change of setting - from Protestant Berlincest to Mediterranean Catholic Molestation. You can probably spot the one constant, however - it’s definitely a delicious, delicious kink by now.
Broncio is Italian for ‘pout’. I use it because I think that, while Anglo-Saxons are aware of the concept, it was on the Mediterranean that the tecnique was perfectionated as the classical tsundere weapon.
I also have to add that part of the reason I love this pairing is that Spain’s courtship of Romano actually kind of looks like classical latin lover behaviour, with a ‘male’ begging the beautiful girl of his dreams to please please put out at least once before they die, and a ‘female’ saving herself for marriage and recurring to any tecnique to keep the male away, because if she surrenders, she’s ‘lost’.
Yeah, you should probably live in my head for that to make sense.
Oi, least I forget! I can’t think of a decent title, since I’m fairly less ashamed of this than I was of the other, so, suggest me one? You may or may not win a little bonus if you come up with a cool idea.
I have to warn you, this may end tragically (unless the OP specifically asks for happy ending ;-)). You know how I am, even my happy endings involve major blood loss and second degree burns on half the body, so... I’m still undecided however, I don’t even know how long this will last or how it will work out. Also, expects cameos from other characters.
And no, I won’t tell you who the third tip of the triangle is. I’m a bitch. (Thought if you know my other ongoing - and no, don’t ask links, I’m not pimping myself! - you probably have guessed it already).
AUs are fine, it's cool if you can't fit in all the bonuses, I don't know you (sorry...) so I have no idea where this is going and am thrilled because of it. I like surprises. I'd actually prefer if he does end up with Spain, but if somehow Mysterious Other Person gets a happy ending too? I'm a sucker for happy endings, but if that doesn't work with what you're doing then that's fine too.
I like where this is going and am excited for more, whenever they come. I've got RL stuff too, so I understand if updates are spread out.
I don't know whether to be FREAKING THE FUCK OUT of excitement that you're writing this, or bawling. Oh man. fffffffffffffffff I hope they end up together. Mostly because I want to read Spain/Romano written by you. But somehow I get the feeling that even if they don't, I'll love it anyways.
tl;dr i love you, and i'm so glad this is anonymous because oh my god what a creeper.

This is exciting! Can't wait to see where this is going to go (I think whichever way it ends up I'm going to enjoy the ride).
I have no idea who you are; I'm really bad at figuring things like that out. But I'll guess at the third part of the triangle anyway, even if you don't respond. Mayhaps I can subliminally influence you (fufufu):

So far, this is great! I dont' want to guess what the secret plot devices are - I'd rather be kept in suspense. So tsundere, Romano...
I can't wait for more! Please keep up the good work!
