And now, the final part of the trilogy. This period cycles through the latter half of the 1600s.
When the spent sun throws up its rays on cloud And goes down burning into the gulf below, No voice in nature is heard to cry aloud At what has happened. Birds, at least must know It is the change to darkness in the sky. Murmuring something quiet in her breast, One bird begins to close a faded eye; Or overtaken too far from his nest, Hurrying low above the grove, some waif Swoops just in time to his remembered tree. At most he thinks or twitters softly, 'Safe! Now let the night be dark for all of me. Let the night be too dark for me to see Into the future. Let what will be, be.'
Acceptance by Robert Frost It was a relief to be away from the salty breeze that swept the ocean. His joints felt stiff, rusted almost no thanks to the salt, having experienced a rather limited range of movement throughout his journey. He had chosen to sail in order to avoid walking on accursed French soil, and so travelled through his new territory of North

Voices reached his ears before he even allowed his surroundings to sink in. They were heated and surprisingly recognisable. The more exasperated one was Spain. Austria looked around briefly, following the source of the voices until he had walked partway down a passage towards a room with a slightly ajar door. Servants who had been slowly cleaning around it, most likely to eavesdrop, caught sight of him with a start and hurried away. Austria frowned, vaguely aware that he knew some of those faces, and approached the door to knock

Totally liked the interaction between Portugal and Austria! and the hints of the Anglo-Portuguese alliance too, I really was disappointed about the lack of this in th fandom, but later I was like 'Wait, why is Portugal with Spain?' and scanned my poor historical knowledge of Portugal and failed to remember anything, but Wikipedia is a life-saver and reminded me of the Iberian Union, and that this union affected the alliance badly, which I failed to remember too. *ashamed to admit it*
And Italy was so adorable! even though I was baffled about Austria not mistaking him for a girl, or are you following the 'breeching' headcanon? Not that I'm complaining, it's more historically accurate that way ..
This fic is one of my favorite fics in the whole fandom! And I learned many things about history from it, it was both enjoyable and educational, so I really thank you for writing such a masterpiece.
Thank you very much for your comments! It warms the cockles of my heart to see people enjoying this fic as much as they do. I have a huge boner for history. I don't know much about European history, so this fic's helped me fix that through diligent, painful research. The complete notes that accompanies this fic is staggering in volume.

Portugal is basically a Spain with all the arrogance of youth, but he's better at reading the athmosphere, right? I loved his tongue sparring with Austria, it seems very fitting both for the character and the setting.
Italy, so cuuuuuute... ♥ Austria brought little Italy because he knew it would make Spain happy, too, right? (But I also liked that you mentioned how he's kind of proud of his little colony and wanted to parade him around a little. Austria's not that bad a parental figure, at least until his children try to leave the nest...)
I am also rather surprised by this admission and would like you to elaborate please! This is rather interesting and it's the first comment of its kind that I've come by

“I’m sorry. He’s angry about the Battle of the Downs. You might want to refrain from mentioning anything related to Holland for a while… that includes Malaya and most of his other colonies

“Romano sleeps with me nowadays, but… I suppose I could get someone else to take care of him during your stay.”
This time, both Austria’s eyebrows shot up.
“I beg your pardon?”
“I said, someone else can probably take care of Romano while you…”
“No, I heard that. I just… never mind.”
“…what?”
Austria wrestled against the urge to sigh. He wondered if Spain truly was that dense or did this specifically to aggravate him.
Kindness is cruelty. He had given Romano to him nearly a century ago. He really ought to have been used to the idea that Spain could show some favouritism towards a colony or two by now, but the Italian Wars and Spain’s blood fever were a stain on his memory he wasn’t likely to forget for a very long time. Austria shook his head to dispel the thoughts. There was no point in revolving around past when he couldn’t profit from it

Haven't commented much on this lately (bad anon!) but I'm still loving it something fierce. Love the rich tapestry you've created with the characters and the world and love how this part has a very bittersweet feel to it since we know the end is coming still very much love for still making it very compelling and their relationship feel very real. Loving and yet at the same time still at heart a business arrangement of sorts.
Will we possibly be getting a tag to this set in the modern world? They're very much ships passing in the night these days with very little to do with each other (as far as I know I could of course be wrong on that *cough*).
Oh and chibitalia is adorable as always I love seeing fics where he and Austria interact even on the barest of levels. On some levels I think that Italy lucked out when he got Austria as the "big brother" figure in his life.

Spain x Austria! after all they were kind of married for centuries.

And cute little fluffy Italy, d'awwww.... The image of him hanging off Austria's coat made me chuckle.
Ah, the 1600 already? They grow up so fast... *sniffle*
*determined expression* I'll follow this until the very end, you can't escape, no matter how many parts you change!

In any case, boys and girls wore gowns until they were breeched, and so, in keeping with canon, Austria isn't aware of Italy's gender and just keeps him in gowns/dresses. One of the servants dressed Italy. Italy is wearing something like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Pr%C3%ADncipe_Baltasar_Carlos,_by_Diego_Velázquez.jpg

This makes me sad there's no Portugal in canon...
