Their modern society was so much snottier, so much more demanding and stressing. Being nations was harder to hide than ever. Every few years they need to change living places, so people won't notice they just didn’t age, and exchange the birthdates in their identifications so they would make sense. They couldn't keep in touch with humans save for their bosses and important people, so that relatives and friends wouldn’t suspect a thing. There were only a few doctors around the world to treat them, because the governments had become so much more protective of them. Everything about them had become top-secret material.
Obviously, this was not the best environment for raising a child, even before throwing in the factors that they were no longer married, lived in different countries, and looked like they just finished their teen years. It would raise ugly looks and many, many questions for sure… Toris knew it would look bad. People might be against abortions, but they were also very much against having babies out of the wedlock. It wasn't a thing people looked at in forgiving eye in neither of their homes. Also- because they looked so young, he just knew Feliks would have to undergo endless harassments and mean words for having the child. But - and he smiled as he remembered - none of the harassments, of which Feliks got plenty of, tarnished his love. No. Feliks was always worried just about the child.
"We totally can't raise like this. It's not good for a baby to grow up surrounded by lies and secrets!"
"It's not very healthy for him to get weird looks because his parents look so young and aren’t married either, Feliks…"
"…Fine, But I'm not lying to him, y'know."
"And when he begins to talk? What we'll do then?"
"I'll just, like, tell them I'm his mom or something, though I'm going to totally hate myself for this. You can tell the same thing when he calls you dad. Even getting funny looks is better then letting him grow in a lie- and don't say we give him away!"
"I don't want to, either, but you're right- it's not good for a child to grow up like this. Think- even if we spend the weekends together, he’ll have two separate homes, in two different countries! He'll never be able to grow up like all the other kids, and eventually we'll have to mess up with so many lies about him… think what if what will happen when he grows up enough to go to kindergarten. He'll have two schools, and will never be allowed to have any friends because of us. It won't be fair for him."
He could still hear Poland's deep sigh.
"I still want to raise him… I only had a few weeks before we had to give up Ilona and go back to our nation's stuff. It was, like, a total bummer. I know that eventually… but let's keep him as long as we can, even if it means to get wired looks and piss off our bosses."
