Lithuania suddenly felt himself being crushed against Russia's chest, his arms curled around the top of his back to avoid aggravating any wounds. The Baltic nation was suddenly consumed by another stupid urge to cry, and suppressed it by returning the embrace. He let himself get lost for just one blissful moment, before he reminded himself that it was Russia who was doing all this.
But his doubts were instantly dissolved when the man murmured,
"Well, since we can't protect our people we can protect each other, da?"
Lithuania pulled away, searching Russia's eyes to make sure he was serious, and his expression matched his words. Suddenly overcome by an odd feeling, Lithuania looked down before Russia could spot his reddening cheeks, but he knew he had seen when he felt the man's heartbeat quicken against his chest. Maybe that's what he had been missing. It wasn't just that Russia had depended on him in the past, and that Lithuania was just depending on him now, it was mutual. They both needed each other in their own ways, and Lithuania had been too blinded by shame and spite to realize it.
He looked up almost shyly at Russia, taking notice of the fact that his face was now also glowing pink. In the distance more bombs could be heard thudding across the land, but it no longer bothered Lithuania. He finally felt safe, something he had never completely felt with Russia before. So when he leaned in to kiss Lithuania's forehead, and when Lithuania angled his head upwards so their lips met instead, the Russian was the one who was slightly startled. But he quickly adjusted to the new feeling, his arms gathered Lithuania closer, this time around his waist. The smaller nation hooked his arms around Russia's neck and claimed his lips again, the taste of vodka lingering as they pulled away.
"Is everyone staying here tonight?" Lithuania asked afterwards, referencing the troops.
Russia gave a distracted nod, as he seemed too preoccupied with the Baltic nation's eyes. His view was taken away when Lithuania's eyelids drooped for a moment, but he soon looked back up,
"Sorry," he said, resting his head on the man's broad shoulder, "tired..."
Without warning Russia stood up, taking Lithuania with him, the change in positions made him slightly dizzy. When he looked back down he saw Russia had pulled back the covers on the cot, he smiled victoriously, as if he had discovered a great idea.
"You're right, we have a big day tomorrow, we should get some sleep."
Lithuania blinked sleepily, feeling perfectly content in Russia's arms as it was,
"We do?"
"Mm-hm!"
Russia paused for a moment as they removed their shoes and crawled into the cot. It was slightly uncomfortable, since it wasn't intended for two, but they easily fixed it by filling the remaining gap in the middle. Lithuania settled his chin on the crook of Russia's shoulder, and he felt the nation sigh happily,
"Now we can win the war together..."
The war was still going on, and tomorrow they would have to continue the fight as before, but that didn't bother Lithuania so much anymore. He had the added responsibility of protecting another person, but this time he could know that he was being protected as well. And he knew from personal experience if Russia was anything, it was loyal. Lithuania smiled and maneuvered around for a last kiss, satisfied with a chaste response from chronically chapped lips. He suddenly noticed his back had stopped hurting, finally ceasing for what felt like the first time since the war's start.
"Even if we don't win, we can stick it out, I'm sure." was a half-asleep Lithuania's late answer. Russia gave a drowsy, "Da." before he drifted off.
In the end, Lithuania had become 'one' with Russia again, seemingly returning to what he had tried to leave. But he couldn't deny that things were different this time, and maybe Russia had been right-even if for all the wrong reasons- but now it was both of them needing each other. Lithuania treasured the last few moments of comfort before he too fell into the deepest sleep he had had in years, with the knowledge that someone would be there for him when he woke up to face a new battle.
