Instead of rising to the bait, Lovino smirked. If only they knew... Opening her mouth, she was about to make a retort that would have severely humiliated both Francis and Gilbert, but was interrupted.
"Guys! Guys!" The idiot Antonio was waving his hands frantically. "Let's make peace, okay?? It's not right to fight! Besides, the tomatoes in my backpack are okay, so everything's fine!"
All of them stopped to stare at him. Finally, Gilbert burst into loud, noisy laughter. "Antonio," he managed to say between chuckles, "man, you don't ever change, do you?"
Antonio tilted his head to the right. The situation had completely changed; the atmosphere was less tense, and everybody seemed more relaxed suddenly.
Lovino shook her head. "We wouldn't actually beat each other up, stupid," she explained. "It's just... a way to blow off steam, or do you not ever get angry?"
Antonio gave her that sunshine smile; something thudded painfully in her chest and belatedly she realized that it was her heart. Odd; it had never done that before. "I don't get in fights," he agreed, smiling. "People like me too much!"
She groaned. "You idiot, no wonder you reacted so badly to my punch."
Gilbert looked like he was about to say something, but the warning bell rang and students began walking casually to their classes. Gilbert and Francis apparently had the same first period, which was on the side of school opposite from the main office, and separating Ludwig and Feliciano was of course a travesty, so it fell to Lovino to escort the frustratingly dense Antonio.
"Thanks so much for helping me," he chirped cheerfully as she stalked over.
"It's nothing," she ground out flatly as they climbed the steps.
"It's not nothing, though," he replied. His eyes were wide and she noticed that he had slight wrinkles from smiling so much. Shit. What kind of person was this anyway? "Really, thank you!"
She stopped and faced him. "No, really. It's nothing. Stop acting like we're friends or something. We're not. I'm doing this as a favor to my brother's boyfriend. We. Are. Not. Friends."
A hurt expression crossed the boy's face, but she ignored it and went on, "I'm not talking to you or helping you again after this. Find your own way around -- you seem to be popular enough."
They had reached the office, and as she turned to walk away he grabbed her wrist. She flushed a deep, dark red -- his hand was warm, dry, and his fingers wrapped all the way around her arm.
"What the fuck are you doing?? Get offa me, you idiot," she hissed, trying to tug herself free.
He beamed at her, sunny and sweet. "Waaaiiit! I have something for you!"
"Why do I care?? I'm gonna be late!"
"Wait, no! Get a pass from the office then! Just... here's something for you!" He pulled it out from his backpack.
It was a tomato. Round, red, juicy, and altogether perfect. Lovino stared at it for a second, before her instincts kicked in: tomato. Pretty tomato. Yummy tomato.
But she didn't move.
He finally released her from his grasp and without thinking she rubbed her wrist -- the loss of warmth was almost unbearable. With a hopeful look on his face, he held out the tomato to her. "Want it? Fresh from my garden!"
Scowling, she grabbed the tomato and stalked off in the other direction. After a moment she stopped and turned around. "This doesn't mean we're friends, bastard! Because we're not! It's just that such a nice tomato is a waste on you!"
hope you like it, guys! not much happened, but i'm hoping to have the first small piece of conflict in the next few chapters XD
Ah, I'm really excited to see that you got another part up so soon! I particularly loved Lovino punching Antonio as part of her introduction, and then getting stuck having to show him around. And, of course, the attempt to win her over with a tomato! ♥
