Re: There's Something About Arthur [2/?] anonymous October 22 2010, 00:29:09 UTC
"Bonjour, my friends." Francis greeted as he sat down at the table, leaning back and putting his hands behind his head.

"Took you long enough!" Gilbert complained loudly, stretching a little and flashing a wink at a girl a few tables away. "What were you up to that was more important than us, anyway?"

Francis waved a dismissive hand. "Student council business, as always. Arthur has been ruling the council with an iron fist lately."

Antonio raised his head from where he had been sleeping on the table and said blearily, "Can you not just skip? What's the worst that he can do to you?"

"You know, 'Tonio, that's the best idea you've had all year. He looks like a total geek anyway. What can he threaten you with, telling a teacher?" Gilbert laughed, but the other two looked horrified.

"You've never met him, have you? He's a monster!" Antonio cried, waving his arms around.

Gilbert was understandably confused. "I thought you just said-"

"Oh I didn't mean he was weak in general." There was something sharp and amused in Antonio's eyes, something the two friends rarely got to see but which made them shiver every time they did. "I was referring to what he could do to Francis."

"He's a feisty little thing, yes," Francis said with a sigh and a smile. "Crazy, if I say so myself. If we hadn't known each other since we were toddlers, he'd probably have killed me by now."

"Yeah right," Gilbert snorted, taking a swig of orange juice. "He doesn't look like mu- hey." His eyes narrowed, and a smirk spread across his face. "You like the little bugger, don't you?"

Francis sent him a glare, and he crowed in delight, attracting a few glances from the other students. Antonio wore a look of confusion that was slowly changing into dawning comprehension.

"I will not pretend to hide it," Francis said, uncharacteristically touchy. "But it is not like, as you say." His lip curled in displeasure, then he sighed. "It is nothing less than true amour!"

Gilbert looked around and his eyes locked onto Arthur's slim form just entering the cafeteria. "What the fuck do you see in him, man? He looks like a grandpa! Totally not awesome."

"He is not as cute as the Italian twins," Antonio agreed, casting a glance towards their table.

Francis simply laughed. "Non, non, non, my friends. You shall see that Arthur has his appeal. Here, I have a suggestion that will perhaps open your eyes."

The other two leaned forward eagerly.

"So it begins like this..."

The cafeteria was packed with people, as usual, and Arthur found himself a little lost as he searched for Jones.

"Kirky!" An obnoxiously loud voice called from the other end of the room. Arthur spotted Alfred there, waving furiously from an empty table, his letterman jacket draped haphazardly over the back of the seat. "Kirky, over here!"

"Jones!" he roared as he briskly made his way over to the table. He put his hands on his hips and glared. "Haven't I told you never to call me that?"

"Aw, man, you're no fun! Then what about what Kiku called you, huh, Ig- Ig..."

"It was Igirisujin for your information. And I would not appreciate-"

"It's perfect! Iggy!" Alfred's grin a bit brighter than was appropriate for a boy his age.

"What the- never mind. It's useless to argue with an idiot. What did you want to speak with me about?"

"Oh yeah, that." Alfred scratched the back of his head and gave an apologetic smile. "I, uh, forgot."

"Forgot." Arthur's reply was terse and quiet, and he let out a sigh of frustration. "Fine then. I am leaving. I have better things to do with my time than have it wasted by someone with the attention span of a fly."

"Hey, that's totally unfair," Alfred objected, slamming a hand on the table. "I had a bunch of great ideas, but you know, I had loads of stuff to think about too-"

"Which obviously means they weren't important enough to merit a place in your memory. Goodbye, Jones." Arthur stood up to leave, but instantly found himself knocked flat on his back by a speeding Gilbert.

"Watch it!" Alfred yelled at the other boy as Arthur made a pained noise, other students crowding in to see what all the fuss was about.

"Sorry, president," Gilbert said, his smirk not making him look sorry at all. "I didn't see you there."

Arthur only glared at him, then blushed pink as he realised the position they were in. "It's fine, Beillschmidt, just don't run in the cafeteria again. It's against school rules. Now could you get off me?"

There was a look of dawning comprehension on Gilbert's face that Arthur couldn't even begin to fathom, but he made no move to get up, making Arthur squirm uncomfortably beneath him. "Say, Kirkland, how would you feel about-"

"Come on, Gil, we know you're just faking it," Alfred laughed, grabbing Gilbert by the back of his jacket and hauling him up. "Up, before you suffocate the guy."

"Yes, Gilbert, you should be more careful." To Arthur's surprise, he was helped up by none other than Antonio Carriedo Fernandez, one of the boys he knew absolutely hated him. He narrowed his eyes, wondering what he was up to. The Spanish boy looked as oblivious and innocent as ever. "Are you hurt, Kirkland? My friend can be very rough sometimes!"

Arthur's eyes widened in shock as Antonio began to pat him down, seemingly checking for broken bones. He gave an undignified squeak when a hand rested on his waist, and he pulled away quickly. "Ca- Carriedo! There's no need for that, I'm fine-"

"No, Arthur, we do need to make sure you're in top condition." A strong arm wrapped around his waist and tugged him against someone's chest, and Arthur groaned as he realised who it was.

"Get off me, Francis."

Francis only laughed, tightening his hold against the struggles. He bent Arthur's head forward, running his fingers through his hair and rubbing the area where he had hit the floor. "We should get ice for this, it's already starting to swell! We must get some ice before your head becomes even more bloated than it already is."

Arthur's face burned with humiliation as he looked up through his fringe to see a large number of the student body gawking at the apparent molestation of their student council president. He redoubled his attempts at releasing himself, finally managing to get out of Francis' grip. "Honestly, I don't know what's the matter with you three, but whatever your problem is, sort it out yourselves and do not involve me. And for the last time, Francis-" he slapped away the hand that had been reaching for him- "I'm fine!"

He walked away hurriedly, trying to get as far as possible from the cafeteria, only stopping when he reached the student council room. He threw open the door, noting gratefully that Angelique had left a steaming cup of Earl Grey on his desk, having presumably gone off to lunch. He sighed, slumping down onto his chair. Just what had happened earlier?

To his annoyance the door flew open, and Alfred breezed in, kicking the door closed again and running up to Arthur. "Hey, Kir- I mean, Iggy!"

"Just leave, Jones," Arthur groaned. "I'm not in the mood for your idiocy."

"That's just mean," he protested. "And I was even nice enough to get you a burger. I was gonna give it to you at lunch earlier, I didn't get a chance to. It's been pretty busy with all the fundraisers, yeah? Figured you could use a little boost."

Arthur's mouth hung open at the statement, and he turned pink. He did not need to be taken care of like some child! But... it was rather nice of Jones. So the idiot could be considerate sometimes. "I- uh.. I- Thank you, Jones."

Alfred set it down, beaming, then his face fell into a puzzled frown. "Although what was that earlier, huh? Gil was being an idiot as usual, but I didn't expect Antonio to start going all weird. And Francis is Francis, but that was still really weird."

"They've probably involved me in one of their little inside jokes," Arthur said, sighing. "I'm sure it'll be back to normal by tomorrow, at least. Until then, I just need to avoid them."

Alfred seemed to brighten up. "Yeah, they'll stop by tomorrow. Anyway, I've got to go finish up lunch with the rest of the guys; see ya Iggy!"

He walked off, closing the door behind him, and Arthur frowned, taking a sip of tea and unwrapping the burger that Jones had been so (uncharacteristically) kind as to give him.

Was he the only sane person left in the school?

It's been so long. I'M SO SORRY IT'S BEEN SO LONG, HAVE A SUCKY UPDATE ;_; Stuff have happened. T_T

By the end of the first period the next day, Arthur was absolutely positive that Francis, Gilbert and Antonio were out to get him. He always had the same subject every day, Advanced World History- and though normally he quite liked it, he knew that today was going to be a horrible one from the minute Antonio had sat beside him.

The Spanish boy had just kept staring at him, with that rather unnervingly innocent look of his, completely ignoring the lecture in favour of watching Arthur's every move. Arthur had tried not to pay too much attention to it, thinking that perhaps Antonio was merely spacing out as usual, but every time their eyes met he would be flashed with an oblivious, charming smile. It had been rather disconcerting, to say the least.

"Carriedo," he said bluntly as he packed up his things to leave for the next class. "I'd appreciate it if you would stop staring at me. It's really not polite."

He flashed him a death glare, and normally Antonio would be cowering in fear from that alone, but this time he smirked- sharp, dark, and so uncharacteristic that Arthur actually shivered.

"People have always said I'm too easily distracted, Kirkland," he said smoothly, stepping forward a little. "I couldn't help myself."

Arthur felt himself becoming nervous, unsure of what to do. He stepped back, clutching his books to his chest. "Well, don't do it again." He turned and walked away- not fleeing, heavens no- and managed to make it to Advanced Calculus just as the late bell rang.

"Hey Iggy!" Alfred called from his seat near the back, waving madly. "Just made it, huh?"

Arthur inwardly groaned. It would just be his luck that the only free seat was beside Alfred Jones, the boy he'd been avoiding in this particular class for the better part of the year. And, surprise surprise, it was none other than Gilbert Beilschmidt who would be sitting right behind him.

He made his way to the end of the class, slipping into his seat and taking out his book.

"Kirkland, I didn't know you were in my class!" Gilbert sounded genuinely surprised, and Arthur twisted around to glare at him.

"I've only been in all your maths classes for the past two years, Beilschmidt," he snapped. He was in a terrible mood from Antonio's incessant staring, and he did not want to put up with this at all. "If you weren't too busy being a complete dunce, you would notice."

He turned back to face the front again, not even waiting for a response. The teacher had just come in, and this was one of the classes where Arthur actually had to try hard to scrape a pass. Not that he ever mentioned it to anyone- the Lord only knew how much teasing he would get- but he often wondered how much more pleasant his life would be if he had just taken an ordinary maths class instead of this one.

Halfway into the lesson, however, it became clear that he couldn't hide it any longer. The teacher had decided to set them a massive amount of work to practice, telling them they could ask anyone for help, but the class was largely quiet, most people flying through the questions easily. Most including, to his chagrin, Jones and Beilschmidt. In fact, they had just put their pens down. Damn it.

Arthur thunked his head against the desk, hoping the solutions would just strike him like lightning and seep into the paper somehow. He was going to fucking murder the inventors of calculus. Liebniz and Newton, his mind supplied, and he wondered absently why there was no History of Maths class, because that would have been infinitely preferable to this senseless torture.

There was a scraping sound from behind him and suddenly Gilbert was above him, breathing into his hair and arms resting on the chair, effectively trapping Arthur in his seat. "Need a little help, president?" he asked, and Arthur could practically feel the smirk.

"No, now go away," Arthur said miserably, then raised his head to look at the questions again. None of them made sense to him at all.

"Really? Well, just trying to be nice. Don't blame me if you fail," Gilbert snickered, still not moving away.

Why that arrogant son of a-! On second thought, he had an academic scholarship to keep. Perhaps just this once... "Oh, alright," Arthur grumbled. "I'm having a bit of trouble."

Gilbert leaned forward and put his face next to Arthur's cheek, examining the paper. Arthur shivered despite the warmth coming from the other boy, suddenly feeling self-conscious. Beside him, he could vaguely see from the periphery of his vision that Alfred's pen had stilled as he stopped his distracted doodling.

"Fuck," Gilbert breathed into his ear. "You got like, two questions right, and you've answered twenty! And you even left half of them undone! Seriously, Kirkland, it's not that hard-"

Arthur bit his lip as he tried not to let out a frustrated sob. So he was stupid at maths. Lots of people were. But lots of people didn't have academic scholarships to keep or annoying classmates yelling out how idiotic they were. Gilbert still hadn't stopped talking, and Arthur felt his anger rise again until he was ready to punch the git in the face if he would just shut up.

He was saved by Jones scooting his chair closer and pressing his face to Arthur's other side. "Hey Gil, you don't need to be so mean about it," he said, looking over the paper as well. Arthur wanted to die. "At least he's in the advanced class, yeah? So Iggy, for the first problem, what you're looking for is the rate of change of the-"

"I know what it's bloody looking for," Arthur said thickly, wanting to cringe away, but he was trapped by both boys around him. "I'm not that much of a moron."

"Could've fooled me," Gilbert scoffed, but then grinned. "Nah, you're not a moron. Al's right, though, you're getting confused in this question. Kinda like what you've done with pretty much everything else. If you ain't sure about what you're doing, write it out!"

"Aren't," Arthur muttered darkly, but he was ignored by the both of them.

"Go, write it out, Iggy," Alfred encouraged, glaring at Gilbert for some incomprehensible reason. "List down the variables too."

Arthur groaned. "Shut up, you bastards. So with the second question, do I do exactly the same thing?"

"Heck no," Alfred said while miming throwing a Pokeball at a seemingly dying Gilbert. "It's a cone, and you're looking for a volume change, not a length change. And Iggy, class is nearly over! Why bother starting it?"

"Yeah, just leave it for homework or something. Hey," Gilbert suddenly stopped playing around as an idea came to him. "We should meet up sometimes, president. After school or whatever, I could tutor you!"

"I'm coming too!" Alfred cut in, sending Gilbert an annoyed look. "I've got basketball and football practice on Mondays and Thursdays though, so I can't make it then."

"Swimming on Tuesdays," Gilbert said, looking more than a little put out that Alfred was in more teams.

"Wait, I never agreed to anything!" Arthur protested, but was merely clapped on the back.

"We all know you need it, Kirkland. Suck it up and tell us when you're free."

Arthur made to complain further, but was silenced with a look. "Fine," he grumbled, crossing his arms. "I'm only free on Wednesdays. Don't you dare take more than an hour of my time, or I will strangle you both."

"Sure thing, Iggy!"

The bell rang just then, and Arthur shot up, packing his things into his bag as quickly as he could and exiting the classroom before the other two could irritate him further. But just before he left the room, he caught a snippet of their conversation.

"I need to talk to you, Beilschmidt," Alfred was saying with a dark tone as people filed away, and Arthur looked at them curiously from the doorway. Gilbert only smirked arrogantly and whispered something that he couldn't hear, making Alfred glare at him.

Arthur sighed and turned to leave, pushing the conversation out of his mind. Jocks and their testosterone levels. What had he been thinking when he agreed to the tutoring? Beilschmidt was a natural at maths and the sciences, exactly like Jones. They'd be brawling ten minutes into it.

Heaving another sigh, he supposed there was one thing he could be happy about. He just thanked God he didn't have any classes with Francis today.

Oh my God, it hasn't been a year since the last update! *gaspshock* XD Anyway I'm sorry for this and the lack of Francis- this was pretty much born of my dream of having people help me with calculus because I suck at it. Lucky Arthur. Hope you liked, and I promise it will get good eventually. Thanks so much to everyone who read and commented before! :D

Dear author!anon, you live!!

Thank you so much for coming here and updating, I am so happy reading this fill. I love the title, by the way XDDDD For me, too, there is something about Arthur...

I love the interaction twists that are happening with Antonio and Gilbert *evil smirks* The guys are really devious in this, being so obvious in their goals (only Arthur, smart-president extraourdinaire who is also oblivious and bad at math, would not notice) And LOVE LOVE for Alfred catching on and being jealous..ohohoho his use of Gilbert's last name at the end...he means business!!

And I hear you, my dear, maths and calculus and statistics hate my guts, and I hate them right back. Too bad my prof. wants me to take Econometrics next semester...I think I'll die.

Please update soon! This long comment compells you too!! *hopefully XD*

So I'm a bit of a dunce and forgot to post a small part of my story. If you're still checking this out, IDK if you want to read it, it's completely unnecessary but will clear up a rather random-sounding statement about a Pokeball in part 3c. XDDD

Thanks for the long comment, wow, it's so awesome! Oh God I absolutely hate maths but I need to take it- I'm a total biologist at heart but I need maths, bleh. This is actually the stuff I took a year ago so I kind of get it, though I remember I'd cry every maths period because it just terrified me so much. :( Good luck with Econometrics, anon!

Calculus is evil. Glad I don't need it anymore...Somehow I think Francis has something for Arthur. Oh, and I love your Gilbert. He is such an immature jerk, and I mean that with all the love to this fill.<3

IKR. XDD Thank you very much! I still need calculus, unfortunately, though I thought I was done with it already. I'm just happy I don't ever have to do Physics again in my life, though Quantum Physics was kinda awesome though incomprehensible.

Er, may I just take this chance to point out a silly mistake I made? I forgot to post a bit of my story, so if you're interested in seeing it, then it would be really nice if you did so. XD It's not necessary, but it clears up a little random comment about a Pokeball in part 3c- plus it involves semi-nerdy Gilbert. I don't know if it's just me, but imagining total nerd!Gil with glasses is kind of hot, someone should totally write a fic about that.

Again, thanks so much for commenting and liking it! XD

AUTHOR JUST MADE A FUNNY MISTAKE. There's Something About Arthur [3b5/?] anonymous October 26 2010, 03:19:43 UTC
Because I am made of so much fail, have a part that I forgot to post. It goes in between parts B and C. B.5, if you like. It's completely unnecessary but I don't want my effort to go to waste, haha. XD Thank you SO MUCH to those who've commented, and sorry you didn't get to see this XD

Arthur did as he was told, his resentment waning slightly as he accepted the sincere, though somewhat irritating, help they were providing. Still, he couldn't stop himself from making a backhanded compliment. "I thought jocks were supposed to be absolute idiots."

"You've obviously never met the awesome Gilbo, then!" Gilbert crowed, nearly drowning out Alfred's enthusiastic "Hell no!" He bent down again, breath now tickling Arthur's neck uncomfortably. "And dude, you don't need that many variables. The new length of the thingy's gonna be x plus your rate of change, which is xdx, since x was your old length."

Arthur gave a small oh of comprehension, then frowned again. "But I don't get it. How does this relate to the other values?"

Alfred grinned, taking a pen and drawing a little diagram on the corner of the paper and labelling it. "There, that's how it goes."

Arthur raised his eyebrows. "It's a triangle? So all I need to use is the-"

"Pythagorean Theorem," all three muttered at the same time, and Alfred and Gilbert burst into laughter.

"God, we're starting to sound like such geeks," Gilbert said. "Fucking uncool, man."

"Hey, lay off them, they're awesome," Alfred protested, a grin still on his lips.

Arthur ignored them in favour of working through the question, biting his lip as he did so. It took a while, but when he tuned the talkative jocks out, he finally managed to finish. "I've done it!" he cried, straightening up and almost slamming the top of his head into Gilbert's chin.

"Yeah? Lemme check that." Gilbert took the paper in both hands, leaning over Arthur's shoulder and pushing even closer.

Arthur blushed as he only realised then what an invasion of personal space their position was, and had just opened his mouth to inform Gilbert that if he did not get off, right now, you'll be written up for sexual harassment when Alfred removed the problem for him.

"Hey, Gil," Alfred said brightly, shoving the other boy away and standing in his place. "Getting a little too friendly with the president there, huh?" he continued, and Arthur felt something in his stomach flutter strangely at the concern- but it shattered abruptly with his next words. "If you're not careful, he's gonna attack you with the monster brows!"

"It's super effective!" Gilbert cried, draping his arm around Arthur's shoulders and clutching his heart dramatically.

Arthur groaned. "Shut up, you bastards. So with the second question, do I do exactly the same thing?"
