Apology For Patriotism? 1/2 anonymous March 9 2010, 00:51:32 UTC
Anon warns readers for suck-age...this is the first time I'm submitting something to this LJ group and the third time I've written something for Hetalia. Please bear with me...

Canada gapped, hands gripping the mouse tightly and his mouth hanging slightly open. He blinked rapidly and adjusted his glasses to make sure he was reading what was on the screen properly. And he was. The Canadian had simply wanted to check his Yahoo! mail after returning from watching a replay of the Canadian figure skating team winning gold. What he got, though, when he clicked open the Yahoo! homepage, was a strange title: Englishman wishes Canada would apologize for winning.

At first, Matthew had been curious despite his nervousness for what was to come should he click the link. But deciding not to jump to conclusions, he clicked the title and was transported at in instant to the full length article. Now here he was, shocked and upset, as he scanned through the whole thing a couple of times. His lips were pressed together and his eyebrows knitted. There was only one section of the actual article from Britain and the rest was the Canadian press back-lashing against this accusation. But Matthew felt numb either way.

Why, England…

Matthew did admit that he and his people were very excited for the Olympics happening in Vancouver and sputtered their patriotic feelings at every game and event, in bars or at home. And they had been a little more rowdier and louder then before, when they were meek, invisible Canadians worrying about debt and their economy. Matthew knew how they felt as their attitudes were projected on him, the country. The Olympics had really brought out a great national pride. But the English journalist Simon Barnes certainly didn’t think so.

That very afternoon, all the countries had come together, ripping themselves away from their TVs and stadiums, to have another World meeting. Because the Olympics were not an excuse to ignore worldly needs. Which is true, but countries still wanted to watch their athlete compete feverishly, and to cheer them on.

Just outside of the small, almost empty building where the meeting would be held, Matthew quickly spotted Arthur, who was having a small, slightly quiet argument with France. And it looked like the Frenchmen was winning, flipping his golden locks and sneering at the pestering Englishman with a sly grin. This went on for another 5 seconds before North Italy caught Francis’ attention and he dashed off to mess with the unsuspecting country, who was hanging on a tired Germany’s arm. Now England was alone, and paced slowly towards the entrance. It was there that Canada caught up with him and grabbed his clothed shoulder.

Britain spun around and blinked surprisingly down at the blonde. “Oh hello,” he began, squinting a bit, “can I help you with something?”

The Olympics were taking part in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. And the Brit still seemed to get away with not recognizing his former colony. But Matthew didn’t bother with this at all. After all, the man’s journalists seemed to know who he was. He gripped the printed form of the harsh article in his hands before slamming it into England’s chest. The furry-eyebrowed Brit jutted back, a small sound of abruptness escaping his lips, as he reached for the paper, taking it out of the other’s grip. Matthew bit his lips wirily but held fast, violet eyes staring up. After reading the content, Britain’s mouth twitched ever so slightly and he looked down at the shorter male, face nearly blank.

“Why are you showing me this?” he asked, lifting the paper up a bit.

Canada sighed. He really hadn’t wanted to jump to conclusions but here he was, doing just that. “…do you really believe this?” He disliked the way his voice was like a whisper, so he repeated a little louder, “do you really think this about me?”

England’s eyes outwardly lit up for a second as he finally recognized the second largest country in the world, before they fell again. He looked from the paper to the other then back at the paper and sighed, shrugging.

“Listen Matthew,” he began, his voice a bit harsher then expected, “it’s not that I don’t believe you have the right to be proud. Why, I myself was happy for you over being chosen to host the Olympics.”

The shorter blonde nodded.

“But really, my boy, why can’t you control your people?” the Brit folded the paper up neatly, as if it were a document he was ready to dismiss. “I mean, Mr. Barnes was possibly a little more…crude then necessary, but he did bring up a good point.” England passed the paper back to a silent Canada. “I believe you may owe the countries that have come to take part in the sports here an apology for your rude and rash behaviour during games. You may have a chance to regain that soft, sweet title that fit you so well.”

Apologize? For what? For being proud of himself? For shouting and jumping up and down when his hard-working athletes managed to gain a medal or at least a running? For not feeling like he was being ignored and pushed around? For reminding everyone of his existence?

Matthew licked his lips and shot a small glare behind his glasses at Arthur. He opened his mouth, and took a deep breath, planning to say something to prove his riled up emotions and hurt state at what the Brit had said. However, someone beat him to it. Someone he didn’t expect at all to have even paid attention to his conversation with Arthur.

“Yo!” Alfred burst in from behind the front doors and fell in between the two other blondes, causing both to take a startled step back. England blinked down at the semi-fallen American, green eyes shining and narrowed. Matthew was just plain confused. Alfred pulled himself together in the next second, but he wasn’t smiling. In fact, he looked quite pissed but not in a way that would scare anyone. His face mostly resembled a child who was standing up to a bully. The bully being, this time Canada noted, Britain.

“Alfred,” Arthur sighed, clearly annoyed, and fixed his collar with a frown.

“You leave Mattie alone!” Alfred jumped up, pointing accusingly at the Brit, making himself look more like a pestering kid. But Canada didn’t bother with this fact as he watched his rough twin brother America go on. “He has every right to be happy and excited and loud! For goodness sakes, let him have some fun! Being cooped up in this snowy tundra filled with dread, despair and nothingness can probably get really lonely!”

Thanks, Al. Matthew sighed.

“So butt out,” America shoved a disbelieving Britain in the shoulder lightly, “and apologize to Mattie!”

Both countries looked at Alfred in a bit of an amazed standing. England was clearly agitated about being eavesdropped on and shouted at by the American. Canada simple couldn’t believe what Al had just said. It wasn’t like he was the worst twin brother in all of history, but it was just a shocker sometimes when such a powerful nation and the object of Matthew’s troubles stood up for him on solid, honest grounds about anything trivial, like Olympics in this instant.

“Pardon me?” Britain finally said, his mouth etched in complete distaste.

Eh...never mind :D This is gonna be in three parts...

“You heard me, caterpillar brows,” America folded his arms and took a spot a bit behind but definitely beside Canada. He tried to look menacing which failed but the slightly shorter twin appreciated the attempt. “You say you’re sorry to Mattie right now! And will you and the rest of the countries get off his back about being patriotic! Honestly, I’m sure you Brits are just pissed at your medal count or something.”

Britain was now in full-on monster-glaring mode. Canada looked nervously at both of his ‘brothers’. “Shut your mouth,” England scolded and turned from the twins. “I have nothing to apologize for.” He shot a crushing look at America then to his twin. “I will see you in the games, Matthew. And tone down your Canadian spirit next time. It’s not too much to ask.”

America stuck a tongue out at Arthur’s back and peered at Canada who had a worried look but didn’t seem that upset. He met Alfred’s blue eyes with his violet pair and grinned, shrugging.

“Thanks Alfred,” he said, meaningfully now, “I don’t think I should have gotten so upset about this though. It’s to be expected.”

“Matt, don’t let England or anyone walk all over you about patriotism,” the American slammed a fist to his chest and smiled broadly. “It’s the heart and soul of any country, and should be cherished no matter what!”

Despite himself, Canada chuckled and agreed with his brother this time.

“Besides,” Alfred wrapped an arm around his brother’s neck, chocking Matthew for a second, “being this loudly dedicated to your country means you’re getting one step closer to being as devoted as Americans! Isn’t that great? You’re becoming just like me!”

In that moment, Canada suddenly realized a looming factor and thought to himself, in the back of his mind, maybe I should tone it down…just a bit...

Anon hopes OP and readers liked it! So proud to be Canadian and be booming and loving this country! I was kinda surprised that journalists from other countries kept pointing out that Canada was becoming another America with the patriotism :p

Anon, what a great fill! I really like the dynamics between Arthur, Alfred, and Matthew. I still can't quite figure out what made the British journalist so irate; he obviously knows nothing about Canada or Canadians. I could understand the objections if it was a 'we're better than you' or 'we're #1' type of patriotism, but that's not our style. ;D

I guess it can be summed up as a love of country, versus a nationalistic 'Us vs. Them' type of deal.

Ah, well. We'll see what happens in 2012.

Glad you like it, OP ^^ Yeah, I'm thinking he was irked by the way we were all happy at the medals we were getting and thought it unkindly for us to be this way even though we're proud :/

Either way, it annoys the heck out of me >.<

Thxs Alfred, for...er, sticking up for us XD

...I must find this article and BURN IT. RAWR. Canadian!Anon wants to punch England now. Jeez. IF we're not allowed to be loud and happy ON OUR OWN SOIL, then all of you other people are HIPOCRITES LIEK WHOA. Shame! /rage

...Apparently that pissed me off. Huh. I'm sorry. Allow me take a moment to point out that we broke TWO world records. That I know of. *shakes head* And this is why free speach is sometimes a bitch.

My first thought when I saw this prompt was one line from this clip right here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrA4V6YF6SA
The Canadian Prime Minister had to go before parliment yesterday and urge Canadians to engage in what he called an 'uncharacteristic outburst of patriotism' saying "Don't be afraid to wave those flags. We'll appologize to the world for our immodesty later." And apparently the other guys name is 'Al'. XD Can you say irony?
That clip makes me HAPPY in so many ways. <3 Canada getting international love. <3<3<3 My Social Studies teacher TOTALLY showed that in class. XD

I am SO saving this on my hard drive. ...And incoherent!patriotism review thing is FAILED. *sneaks off to throw a shoe at England*

OH! Captcha apparently like Canadian patriotism, because captcha says 'charge overrode'. Touche. *failed at making the accent thing*
