"Fucking rain." Yong-soo muttered with a cigarette between his teeth. "Can't get this thing to light." He fiddles with the wood match, rubbing it against the side of its package. "Fuck!" He hisses, throwing the match on the muddy ground. "It's wet."

"Here." Matthew takes out a metal lighter and lights up Yong-soo's cigarette. "There you go."

"Thanks." Yong-soo draws a breath and breathes out smoke. "Can't stand this weather. Never know what might happen. Hard to fight in it, too."

"It's okay, I'll be by you for the entire time." Matthew pats Yong-soo's shoulder and smiles, tiredly. "The rain should clear up soon."

Yong-soo stares at the pouring rain and closes his eyes. "In another thousand years it will." He turns back into the tent, only a table and a couple chairs occupying the small space. He collapses on a chair, rubbing his tired eyes with his hands. "I feel dead." He whispers, ripping away the cigarette from his mouth and tossing it on the ground. "I'm so sick of fighting and seeing death. So damn...sick of everything." He sighs deeply.

And falls into silence, frozen in place. His legs outstretched, long and lanky and full of tired history. His arms cover his eyes, limp and thin, boned. His hair is messy and over his eyes, cut messily by a stray knife, and unkept for years. His breathing is loud and labored, scratched, withdrawn. Almost afraid.

Matthew looks back into the tent, at Yong-soo, his eyebrows furrowed. He then smiles, just a bit, and walks into the small space, placing his gun on the table and sitting on the chair opposite to Yong-soo. He leans on the back of the chair, mimicking Yong-soo's pose, save for the folded hands on his lap. And begins to whistle.

Yong-soo is drawn from his dark thoughts, and pulls away his arms to look at Matthew. Dropping his arms, he sits upright in his chair and watches Matthew whistle and tapping his feet on the drier dirt.

"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are grey." He stands from his seat, walking over to Yong-soo and holding out a hand. "You'll never know dear, how much I love you. Please don't take my sunshine away."

Yong-soo looks at the hand and looks up at Matthew, who is still smiling brightly. He laughs, a small laugh that rumbled in his throat, and takes Matthew's hand with both of his own and pulls the Canadian into his arms.

"I'll always love you and make you happy, if you will only stay the same." Matthew smiles into Yong-soo's forehead, giving it a chaste kiss.

"Isn't this song about heartbreak?" Yong-soo mumbles with a smile in Matthew's neck.

"Ssh, you're ruining the moment." Matthew breathes, patting Yong-soo's back gently. "It's not much, but at the very least, it made you smile. Maybe it's too much for a time like this, but for now it wouldn't hurt to forget your pain. Just for a minute."

"Mm," Yong-soo breathes and pulls back. "Well, too bad it's still raining."

Matthew shrugs. "Oh the weather outside is frightful," He pulls Yong-soo back into another hug. "But the fire is so delightful."

"And since we have no place to go, let it snow, let it snow, let it snow."

"If it was snowing."

"Somewhere it is."

Research shows that recordings went back to the 1930s and earlier. I don't know when it got popular enough for it to be sung around like that, but hey, it's fiction for a reason.

Taken place during the Korean War. Canada sent the third largest amount of troops to Korea.

The lyrics were taken from a Johnny Cash version that I just used out of whim. Upon research, I predict his popularity didn't hit until later, or around. But I like his version, and really, all the versions are very similar.

If you read the lyrics, it's actually, kinda, depressing. Which is why I cut the brightest sound snippets out and placed them here. I think it's about heartbreak (maybe it isn't...yeah).

Aw... I can see the appeal of Canada/Korea now. It's not often that I see a sardonic Korea on the kink meme, or even one who smokes, for that matter (that is irrevocably in my head canon, given how many Koreans smoke...) and yay for more Korean War interactions with Korea and other countries. ^_^

Hm. There are some elements of sadness to the song, yes, if you look at some of the other lyrics.

"You are my sunshine/my only sunshine/ you make me happy/ when skies are gray/you'll never know, dear,/how much I love you./Please don't take/my sunshine away."

"The other night, dear,/ as I lay sleeping,/I dreamed I held you/in my arms./When I awoke, dear,/I was mistaken/and I held my head/and cried."

"I'll always love you/and keep you happy/if you'll only say the same/but if you leave me/to love another/you'll regret it all someday."

In short, a sweet fill, really.

Yes, it is quite a depressing song actually. But I still like it, lol. And damn it, you're making me ship Canda/Korea! xD

*hugs* Thank you so much, anon! This fill made me smile so much. It's like you just plucked my head cannon for these two right out of my brain and put them on the page. And thank you for picking these two- Korea doesn't get a lot of love in the kink meme, and the Korean war even less. <3 To be embarrassingly honest, I'd never heard the second two verses of the song before, though I knew there were more. But you make it work so well in the story!

Thanks again, anon. This is pretty much the best way I could think of to start off my day. :D

*HUGS*

No problem! This is pretty much the first thing I had in mind and wrote it down immediately. I'm glad it made your day, which was pretty much all I wished for :)

This is such a beautiful fill. And historical, as well, which is always a nice touch. I never even thought Korea/Canada before, and here it is written so wonderfully. In short, thank you, thank you, thank you author!anon.
