“You don’t hate me do you Toris? Even when I make mistakes and do bad things? Things I later regret?”
“No, I could never hate you Ivan.” Lithuania soothingly reassured him.
“I hate this war. So many of my children have died fighting those cursed Germans. I just don’t have the strength anymore to keep fighting. My new boss promised he would end our participation in the war, but some days I don’t like him either! Now my people are caught up in revolution!”
Russia sat down on his bed and put his head in his hands. Lithuania stood silently a few feet away.
“Everyone is yearning for change, but why must it be so bloody? It hurts, somedays it hurts so much, but I just don’t know how to make it better anymore,” he said in a muffled tone.
Lithuania walked over and delicately sat down next to him on the bed.
“That is the nature of war, sir. There is bloodshed and people die. They kill. They swear revenge. They hate.” He took a breath. “But Ivan, sometimes change can be for the better.”
Russia looked up at him with wet eyes.
“Toris, how can you be so kind? After all you’ve seen, all you’ve been through? After,” here Russia choked on the words. “All I’ve done to you?”
Lithuania placed his hand on Russia’s knee in a comforting gesture. “I forgive you Ivan.”
Something like relief flickered in Russia’s eyes and he took Lithuania’s hand and kissed it.
“You don’t know how much I need you, Toris.” Russia brushed his hand through Lithuania’s long bangs then cupped his cheek.
“As long as you’re here by my side, I know I won’t go down the wrong path.”
Staring into his eyes, Russia gently leaned in for a kiss. Their lips touched. As the kiss deepened, Russia pushed him down to land on the bed as Lithuania’s arms wrapped around his back.
