That night, after the chicken had been plucked and cooked and Russia ate his fill, and the deer preserved in the cold storage for later, and Estonia was in bed falling asleep, there was a knocking on his door.
‘Who could that be?’ He wondered, coming awake. “Yes come in.”
The door slowly creaked open to reveal Latvia, dressed in a heavy cotton robe with a pillow in one hand, a candle in the other.
“Eduard?” he whispered. “Can I sleep with you tonight?”
“Of course, what’s wrong Raivis? You can’t sleep?” Estonia sat up as Latvia softly shut the door, bathing the room in the milky light of the candle. Latvia shuffled over to the bed, and Estonia took the candle from his hand and put it carefully on top of the wooden bureau, next to his glasses.
“Did something bad happen today?” He looked at the younger boy who stood next to his bed and sniffled, hugging his pillow.
“It was horrible, Eduard. Mr. Ivan did all these terrible things, and he made me c-carry the dead animals,” he burst into tears and trembled.
Estonia reached out and enveloped Latvia in his arms, pulling him onto the bed into his embrace.
“There, there, it’s okay now. It’s all over, I’m here, I’m here.” He murmured soothingly, holding onto the shaking boy. Latvia grabbed onto Estonia’s shirt and started sobbing into his chest, his words interrupted by hiccups as he recounted the day’s events.
After a while, when his sobs had mostly quieted, Latvia straightened up.
“Better now?” Estonia asked and Latvia nodded, wiping his wet face on his sleeve. Now able to get a better look, he appraised the other nation, at a close distance.
“You know you look different without your glasses,” a small grin teased Latvia’s lips.
“I do? How is that?” Estonia replied self-consciously, blinking and lifting his hand to push a stray hair behind his ear nervously.
“Yes, you look….very….cute.” Suddenly Latvia threw his arms around the older boy and planted a kiss on those unsuspecting lips.
“Mmmph,” mumbled Estonia, caught and surprised in the liplock. But as the shock wore off, he started to reciprocate. After a drawn-out moment, Latvia pulled away with an audible lip-smack. The two stared at each other, faces in close proximity to each other.
“Please Eduard, I want to forget. Help me forget,” Latvia whispered, pleading at Estonia with wide, frightened eyes.
Estonia considered, that had been unexpected but undeniably pleasant. He didn’t want to hurt his friend’s feelings. And they were friends, and true friends helped each other out.
“Sure.” Estonia leaned forward slowly, cupped Latvia’s face in his hands and kissed him, closing his eyes. Latvia’s arms wrapped around his back and they tumbled to the sheets together. Estonia released an ‘oomph’ as Latvia landed on top of him and squished all the air out of his lungs. Latvia started giggling.
“Hey that’s not funny. You’re heavier than you look.” With a grin, he started tickling Latvia’s sides. Latvia squirmed, vainly attempting to cover his vulnerable sides with his arms, but didn’t get far as Estonia had the upper-hand.
He curled up into a ball, and twisted from side to side, as Estonia kneeled over him and tickled. Soon they were both out of breath and smiling, lying next to each other.
